Hello
I thought i would go and look at an add that came up online just to see what drivers are in these had a look and their red goodmans magnet  i know theirs cheap oval speakers from goodmans but these are weird. Only markings on them are RS at the back? took couple of photos but will take the back off and take one of the drivers later...
I know their are no marking on them but im just wondering....

Strange. I don't recall Goodmans making larger elliptical drivers, unless the photos are deceiving me and the cabinets are actually quite small. Larger British ellipticals are usually from EMI or Fane. There used to be French and German examples too.

Ah. They definitely are smaller than I'd thought. What are they, 6" by 9"? I think I've seen those before somewhere. I'd imagine they'll sound quite nice. Ideal for use on a modest open baffle with a supertweeter.

Hi
Yep i thought they were bigger in scale so went to view going by the picture but their quite tiny i believe their 6 by 9 i was allowed to take the back of to see what the driver were and was surprised just put them on a nytech and they seem fine quite nice if a tad bright i thought for £10 i would give them a go....
What year would you say? I dont think their a kit speaker i think a manufacture made them but find this out is somewhat tricky...:mental:

Just touch a small, low voltage battery across the terminals intermittently. Whichever way round moves the cone forward a bit has the battery positive touching the speaker positive terminal. Don't try this with tweeters, they can blow.
looks like a bit of cheap hardboard for the back.
I'd make a new back with something a bit thicker/stiffer....It may stand proud of the cab but could be chamfered or sanded back to look neat.
NIGE.

Why not keep the original backs and just glue something thicker to them that fits within the case wall battens just leaving a lip of the original back to screw down with?

Would a 9 volt battery with a snap on do the trick to test them? Can you advise on how to do this ive never tested polarity this way?
Thank You

Don't use a 9V use a 1.5V. Just hold the leads on each end.

Back in the 60's my late uncle was a Hi Fi enthusiast. He also liked good sound in his car, a Singer Gazelle. I seem to remember an elliptical looking like yours set in to the rear parcel shelf. It sounded pretty good.

Hi Alex
Their are weird i first put them on and they sounded OK but after a day and night warm up their opening up and sounding very nice indeed. I would like to see if their in the HI-FI yearbooks but i have no identification. Nice enough find for £10 though i suspect thats their value?

If they sound nice, which I'm sure they do, value must be more than £10.

The drivers are worth a bit more I reckon. Realistically, I'd say £35 to £45 could be right. Although you do see some crazy prices being asked for vintage full range units on eBay. Check out the Philips, Telefunken, Isophon and especially Klangfilm stuff.
Personally, I'd hang onto them. Trying them on an open baffle would be interesting.

Hi Guys
Ive put them in the main system and i must say their very good in the mid , treble the bass is their but subtle these are very good boxes for the money and some fun i think they will be here for a while i might try taking the back cover of and have them like an open baffle type cab but not sure yet just getting ideas. Would you believe their more suited to rock music  I put on Led Zep Whole lotta Love and all the detail's were their in the image very good sound stage with toe in slightly and away you go...will have them on throughout the evening beers in the fridge

A lot of ellipticals sounded pretty good, Hacker and Roberts used them in their radios to good effect.
The better EMI elipticals were used in B&W's early speakers. I have DM1's and DM3's, not bad at all.

Don't forget that your speakers were designed to make good sound with just a few watts of amplifier, be a shame to overdrive them.
I stupidly put too much power through a DM1 once. it was very loud though, stupid me.

Hi Alex
I guess the MF is too powerful for them...i'll stick to the nytech at 25 WPC....
