I think I would like to change the very poor phono cable on my GL75 Lenco.

Any suggestions- plugs and cable?

What's your budget? If your really series about your Lenco speak to Yannis Tome.

Yeah, for me, Yannis is unquestionably the tonearm cable master :)

Marco.

I can highly recommend the 420.5 litz cable, kicks the old 422.5 construction into the sidelines.

His basic Van Damme cable (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Van-Damme-Tonearm-cable-Twisted-pair-Ultra-Pure-Silver-plated-OFC-copper-/221774228101?hash=item33a2c62a85:g:ZHMAAOSw8d9UuOT g) is astonishing value and it's not really worth going DIY when you can buy something so nicely made at this price. I'd avoid any of the Litz or Star-Quad cables if using a MM cartridge, since capacitance is quite high.

You can also buy a very similar Van Damme based tonearm cable for only £50 from Sound HiFi (http://www.soundhifi.com/cable.html#cables).

If you want something at the other end of the scale, Mogami Neglex W3106 with Neutrik Reans or MS Audio (or plugs of your choice) will be quite effective. The cable is about €5.20 a metre.

Audio Origami also do external cables based on the Van Damme.

Cheers for the suggestions chaps I will look at all of them when I get a chance at lunchtime.

Are you using the original GL75 tonearm?

Are you using the original GL75 tonearm?

Yes Ralph I am. It sounds very good indeed with Desmo V blocks and fully fettled!

It's a relatively easy diy job then to replace the external cable with a couple of metres of Van Damme Pro Patch and a couple of Neutrik plugs and you should have change from a tenner. I kept the original GL tonearm on my Leak Lenco too and I've also fitted Desmo V blocks. I've replaced the internal and external wiring and with a 2M Red it sounds mighty fine.

Using Shure M55e / Jico SAS, not sure I will better this MM combination.:)

Thanks for the recommendation re cable / plugs.

I've had an M55E with original Shure stylus on my Lenco and it performed well. Never tried the Jico stylus but I'd love to hear one. With the recent Jico situation I'm considering an Ed Saunders stylus for it as I'm told the M55E is a bit of a gem?
For those that think the GL arm is a bit of a clunker, mine has carried both an AT33PTG and a rehoused DL103 without issue.

Interesting to hear that as I am considering a Denon 103 on the GL75 arm.

To get the GL arm to work right with the 103 I did the thread and superglue thing to the counterweight stub and added some more mass to the headshell. I may still have some pics of my modified headshell and I can show you how it's done if you're interested.
Was it you that was after a GL arm or some parts off one?

I was after a GL75 arm Ralph. Yes might have to add some mass to the tonearm so would be good if you have some pics of yours so I could see what you did?

I will have a spare arm somewhere. I'll dig one out for you. I made a couple of high mass headshells for the DL103 and they're slotted too. I know I have one in the stash. If I can find it and you fancy it you're welcome to it. The only proviso I have is that you return it if/when you don't want it anymore. I hate giving stuff away only to see it on the bay a week later. It'll be a couple of days before I can sort this out because I have quite a bit on atm.

Hi Ralph, sorry I should have said I did actually get a spare tonearm which was kindly donated by Grant, however the end stub is quite loose and I would have to do some fix to this. I am always on the look out for a mint arm which does not need any first aid.

If you have one in mint condition I would rather buy it off you rather than loan it. Thank you very much for the offer it is very generous of you.

My quest is to build the best condition original Lenco I can and it is only the original tonearm which lets mine down as it is slightly bent upwards at the end and has some surface pitting.

No worries and please don't take it the wrong way. I'm not concerned about the arm but rather the headshell which has been modified somewhat. Let me dig them out and you can have a look.

Not at all Ralph, it's very generous of you to offer. I have plenty of headshells so that would not be a concern, you could keep that part. Thank you for taking the trouble to have a look for me.

Hi Jimbo, I have been through my stuff and picked out the best arm. The chrome isn't pitted though it doesn't quite shine like a brand new one but I dare say it will polish up nicely. The counterweight stub has only a minimal amount of sag and is about as good as an old one of these could be. No headshell and I'd like to keep the mounting collar unless you absolutely need it. PM me your address and I'll get it of to you in the next day or two.

It's on its way to you Jimbo.

I found that headshell I was on about whilst I was having a root through some stuff this morning. This headshell weighs in at 20 grams rather than the 14 grams of the standard shell iirc. It's not mint but not bad to say I did it by hand. I think I'll put my 103 in it tomorrow and give it a workout.

Thank you very much Ralph. PM me with your PayPal address and I will cover the postage.

I will be interested to know how you get on with the 103 / Lenco. Not seen one of those headshells before?

The postage was bugger all James but when you get it have a look at the arm first and let me know if it's ok for you.

That's a standard Lenco headshell with a piece of 3mm aluminium plate glued in place to raise the mass and the slots were done on a pillar drill and filed smooth. I did two more but I had the slots done properly on a milling machine and they looked really nice. The 3mm plate also brings the internal depth of the headshell to the same as the sliding platform.

The transformers have arrived from BlueBell to fix my preamp :) so the 103 is going to have to wait until tomorrow.

I have a spare headshell so I might get mine done - I have mate who maybe able to do this for me.:)

Hope the preamp goes OK.

Will get back to you on the arm -thanks
