Vintage Sony with replacement power amplifier board.

The original power amp pcb failed a long time ago, including a little while after initial repair. This has been kicking about for a long time under the bench, slightly scratched on the front but with all the original knobs present. 240/220/127/110 V mains selector on rear.

So I have replaced the power amp pcb with an LJM L12stereo MOSFET pcb http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Assembled-LJM-L12-Stero-power-amp-board-FET-output-with-rectifier-filter-/131518787329?hash=item1e9f216f01:g:klAAAOSwdpxUVwK M

Close up of LJM board:

Power output now is 32W per channel into 8 ohms, with original MM phono stage built in.

Second system duties maybe?, or starter amp for someone new to vinyl?

Looking for £40, though postage to UK is going to be £20 due to size and weight.

Why "yes really"?

I expect it sounds fine, looks good, probably reliable now, bargain.

Thanks Alex, it's just that I didn't get any interest here :)

I was thinking of doing something similar with a Radford SPA50 that is faulty, tatty and not been working properly for many years. Of course this is just a power amp, and has, if my memory is correct, just a single rail supply. I suppose a digital amp such as the TPA3116 might be used as this runs on a single rail supply, but power supply voltage is too high for the TPA. So, this is not really on either.

I've beaten you to it on exactly that! "Gain clone" innards fitted ;)

On an SPA50?

I do have a TPA3116, and it's pretty good, just in a small plastic box.

I built an amp with the same L12 board as was in the amp just sold. I have also built a TPA 3116 amp. Chalk and Cheese IMO, which one do I prefer? The L12 by a long way. Great bass, sweet treble and everything in between. Those boards are great value.

Apparently, the TPA3116 varies a lot depending on things like board layout and other factors. Mine was built by someone I consider an expert in these matters, not me, although I'm a qualified engineer, and it's very good. Some suffer from hiss, switch on thump, various distortions switch off thump, etc. etc. mine has none of these problems.

Perhaps I should try the L12 board though.

Don't get me wrong, the TPA3116 is stupidly good for what it is. I bought the board that was touted on Diyaudio as the best bang for the buck and the best moddable. The power supply is a proper linear supply with a good tranny and caps. The L12 is more gutsy and has a depth that the 3116 does not.....IMO of course. Mine has a slight switch-on click, but no hiss and is eerily silent even at full volume. The click could be solved by a slow start circuit......but can I be a*sed.... :)

My TPA3116 competes with all the amps that I have, and I have quite a lot. It was built by one of the experts that posts on Audiokarma. He has had a lot of experience building and modifying them. I would not have the knowledge or patience.

It was very cheap to me, a very kind present from him.

I suppose I should realise that a standard ready made TPA3116 board is unlikely to perform like the one I'm lucky to have.
