Early Sunday morning in April

OK so it is 06:38 on a rather warm, gorgeously sunny Sunday morning and I am just about to start the day with some Peruvian coffee. In six days time Sue and I will start moving house which of course involves packing away all of the CD's and the vinyl and most importantly, the gear, to be relocated at the new place far away on the outskirts of town. To follow this up, in a few months, I am looking forward to a rather nice financial windfall and an entirely new vinyl system. I have kind of narrowed things down to a Michell Orbe with OL Silver tonearm or a Nottingham Analogue Hyperspace with their own tonearm. One thing is certain, this new house has a lounge/diner that is around twenty two feet long with a large conservatory on the back. Methinks that should be good for some nice Moog bass frequencies.

Whatever you are doing today, 24th April 2016, I hope it is a bloody marvellous day all round.

Good luck with the move. Sue and I are also starting to pack, and the hifi is causing great angst. I had hoped to drive it out, but we are running out of time. Hopefully Arthur will supply good packing for the newly pimped PT. But if the removal firm fail to convince me on the quads they will have to go to my dad's and come down with the guitars and P A.

Richard, here's hoping the packing goes according to plan for you and Sue and also, here's hoping that any future plans work out to their best.
Regarding my future vinyl upgrade, I do have a perfectly good TD160B MkII that I have recently fitted a new maple hardwood plinth to but folk have advised me that a much better tonearm and cartridge may be wasted on this deck. Yes, it would probably need re-springing, yes it definitely needs an up to date, quality tonearm and yes, I would love a Dynavector DV20L cartridge but only if the Thorens is up to it.
Me personally, I would love to upgrade the TD160 further but sometimes you have to admit defeat.

Gary ( gazjam ) of this parish has a Gyrodek which he upgraded to an Orbe . Absolutely beautiful turntable .

Maybe don't hurry to admit defeat. I grew up with the "Linn chip" idea of turntable, then arm, then cartridge, and my time at PT was when there were turntables and digital but no arms (Arthur was I think involved in the Helius Orion bearing design). But, as I have mentioned in the Techipedia, where I have tried several arms on an SL1200, and swapped several turntables under the same arms (FX-R and F5) I think the arm is AT LEAST as important as the motor unit - probably much more so. I appreciate I am spending money at the moment upgrading a turntable I already consider to be very fine, and I think I will get great results, but it is refinement of an already fine sounding unit - and the arm and Dynavector cartridge are a fundamental part of that. (So is an awesome MC phono stage)

If you like the Thorens, you can upgrade arm and cartridge and if its not doing it for you, change the motor unit under them then. It's a long time since I played with a TD160, but it's a decent enough starting point. If I wanted to turn it into a Pink Triangle, and it must be apparent I am quite keen on that solution for me, then motor and mat/platter are the areas to look at (if the springs are good). I see Rexton has a thread going on this. Not sure if Arthur does DC motor upgrades for the Thorens but I can ask when I pick up the pimped PT. Not hard to improve the mat and motor to good effect. In the case of the mat, at relatively low cost to try.

But if it doesn't work - port your arm and cartridge to another deck afterwards. I personally think the LV-V is holding you back heaps. It was the arm I first had on my first PT, and the kindest thing I can say about it is that it was better than the cartridge that came with it.

How do you listen to your system with "currently no phono stage"?

Anyway - move first, tinker with turntables later :cool:

Yes, I like the advice. Tonearm and cartridge on the TD160 and then if all else fails, an upgrade of turntable.

To be fair, I do really like the bronze Gyrodeck and I think it would be excellent with an Origin Live Encounter or similar. To many options I'm afraid but I still need this compensation claim first.

You can only go so far with the TD160 and then you need something better all round.

Good luck with the move and if you are anything like us, you will still have boxes with stuff in, 10 years after moving.
