12" MG's are great... I've had a couple of pairs before. Very dynamic. They are something to care for and get right before passing 100% judgement though. Just make sure the cabs are adequate for MG's. For 12" MG's the Lancasters are good but something bigger will blow ya socks off. Also, if they come with the original crossovers, make sure they are at least refurbished, set to flat and the external tone switches removed out of the signal path. Even when the switches are cleaned they are still a weak point.

If you can possibly afford a pair of Paul Coupe's RFC Canterburys, they are quite stunning. Certainly the best speakers to use Tannoy drivers I've ever heard, and up there with the best speakers I've ever heard at any price. Really amazing natural breathing dynamics, tonal richness, and sheer liveness; just everything you could want in a speaker. And they look beautiful; the craftmanship is quite exceptional.

I take it you've seen my ad ---- and appreciate they are not Golds but HPDs and different cabinets ( so infact not what you asked for at all ha ha ) but incase -- dont think you'll get a better price and one of those who have declared an interest informs me that the guys at Lockwood really rate Devons -- I must stress I have no idea if this is true or not but as he was buying rather than selling I'm inclined to believe him ..... anyway a cheaper option for you

As someone who has owned all four varieties (12 and 15in MG and HPD) - while I'm a fan of the 15in MG, I think the 12in HPD (HPD315a) is the better bet, but you do need an appropriate cabinet. 12in MGs in Chatsworths roll off around 90hz which is no bass at all really. Very sweet sound but you aren't getting the big impactful experience you get either form 15in MGs or from 12in HPDs.

Added bonus is that HPD315's are both cheaper and more plentiful.

Or as people have suggested get Paul at RFC to work his magic on a pair. Here's mine:

Indeed especially by the the bidding finishes I'd put a guess on these doubling by the end of the auction - vanishingly rare in the condition described.

Crossover point varied between 12 and 15in HPD, but was the same on the Gold. The crossovers on offer will not only 'do' they are actually the correct ones.

Yup, the crossovers for both 12" and 15" are the same, Alf.

Just a couple of jobs/checks on them if you can.

If the ones on offer haven't already had the Electrolytic caps replaced then have that done first.

The other caps 'could' also do with a bit of an update but not really necessary. It's a 'whilst you in there' kind of job really.

Both are not a big job, just make sure the values are correct.

Also, remember to remove the switches and set have them wired to flat.

Another thing to just check on them is the 50ohm resistor, I've found some of these to have actually melted the casework. If they are fine with no discolouration on the inside of the lid then leave them be. You can also just de-solder one leg and measure them if you feel you need/want to.

Remember, if they are going in the cabinets don't worry about trying to fit the caps in the case either, they will be fine with the lids kept off.
