I love the warm glow of valve amps, but my current amp fails to impress in that area.

So on a wet winters day I made this little table lamp. Total cost is under a tenner and the antique bulbs can be bought in a variety of shapes and sizes. It works perfectly when listening late at night in a darked room.

Like that Chris. I can buy those bulbs local for not much compared to other shops I've seen. I saw these a while back, way to expensive, but gave me many ideas. Just need to find the time now to make some up.

I think the bulb I used was about £6 at Wilkinsons

I chose the wooden box to match some of my existing kit, but any dead hi fi component could be modified.

A wooden box makes it that bit easier. A hole in the top to take the bulb, a Wickes batten holder mounted inside and a hole for the cable.

There is also Nelson Pass' de Lite amp.. reportedly equal or better sounding than a 300b type amp, by those who have built a copy..
Lights AND an Amplifier.
Best of both worlds?

Well the need to upgrade has hit me. The lamp has had lots of admiring looks, but in a darkened room is all a bit bright.

So my idea is to use an old valve, where the heaters are still intact, instead of the light bulb. I guess the tungsten heated valves would work best, being brighter.

Can anyone recommend a valve that looks the part and would do the job.
