View Full Version : Shed load of 78 RPM RECORDS - who would be interested?

I've acquired probably 600 or so 78 RPM records - does anyone here know anyone who might be interested in them?

I have no idea of the value, but they are without sleeves, look mostly Classical (although there are some Winston Churchill speeches in among them) - and they are taking up too much room on the floor of my garage!

they are all stored in plastic crates in varying condition (they mostly look fine) - this might be the wrong forum to advertise them on but I thought I would give it a go. Anyone interested should really come round and have a look through them (here in Norfolk) but I could put up a few odd photos of some of the labels I guess if there some demand.

I can't put a price on them so simply asking for the best reasonable offer!

Classical tend to have little value as far as I'm aware though I'm no expert. Some jazz 78s however can be quite valuable.

Being shellac they are difficult to post without breakages too so as you say pick up would likely be best option... I like my 78s on the wind up. Ifs a time thing i guess.. I have a few jazz and light entertainment of the day and they are often the most likely to have value.

Well I wasn't sure if anyone would play 78's here - it's hardly audiophile. Anyway, someone might pick up on this thread and want them.

Not exactly audiophile but sometimed the sound can be so alive that you wonder where we went wrong. I very occasionally play 78s on my 301 which is set up for mono, I swap in a 78 stylus for the job.

I have a Miyajima Premium 78 cartridge for playing 78s (though it's not ideal for very early ones) as well as an Esoteric Re-Equalizer that can handle the variable EQ that 78s have (each label had their own). Sounds quite good on my TD124. I've been having a go at digitising some with some success. I find it great fun.

I've been collecting classical 78s, in particular German Lieder and classical chamber music. Classical 78s tend to be cheaper than jazz or pop (mostly from the 50s) though cheapest of all is the 20s-30s dance band stuff that no-one at all is interested in any more.

No sleeves is a worry though because it indicates they might not have been terribly well looked after. Shellac wear does degrade the sound which has its limitations even when pristine ....

Pity Norfolk is a bit of a hike from Berkshire I'd love to come up and take a look at this. Having said that it's really bulky getting into 78s and there's massive space and weight for not a lot of music.

This is a mega long shot but don't suppose there are any Sandy Powell records amongst them? Sandy Powell was my Father's cousin and I collect any of his stuff that I can find. thanks in advance,

By coincidence I was speaking to someone today who 'does' have some Sandy Powell records (78's) - about 3 of them I believe - he says he's going to dig them out for me on behalf of your request. He did say that they have been at the mercy of a gramophone needle so I would assume they are fairly well used! He also told me a couple of Sandy Powell jokes - one about the doctor treating a guy with jaundice etc, I'm sure you know them.
