Advice please;Integrated,preamp+power, ..?

Hi guys,

I am lost in search for amplifier to feed our Spendor D7's.

As a source we have Clearaudio Concept MM+Clearaudio Nano phono, CDP Philips CD753, RPi+Audiophonics I-ES9023 Sabre DAC V3 TCXO as a stream fro Tidal HiFi and local FLAC albums.

I have an integrated amp for home test at the momemnt, which is Naim Nait XS 2. The sound what coming out of the speakers is just terrific. And I may have a good deal on it from my dealer as this is pre-owned unit

But as my nature is, a constantly trying find more before I make a final decision an settle.

I was looking for other integrated but also I look into pre-amp&power-amp.
Maybe something like NVA P90sa (stepped attenuator) Passive Pre-amplifier+2x NVA A70 mk2 power

Would that be better than Naim? Or I am not going to not achieve much going this way?

Trouble is I do not have much chance to travel and try to listen to stuff. So I either need something in Dorset area or best something which my dealer (Stoneaudio) can get hold on

Don't forget to budget for NVA speaker cables if you go that route. If you use anything else you will probably void the warranty. It's all in the advert on eBay.

I used the P50 passive pre for a while and it did what you'd want it to; it was totally transparent and just gave you a quality source and attenuation option.

As for the warranty, this is all it says on the site 'Warranty is for two years parts and labour and after that a further three years it will be repaired on a no profit /cost basis.'

Opinions always vary. Get hold of the owner and see if you can loan some kit.

Ideally you will want to use NVA interconnects too.

A considerably different sound to Naim. Only you can decide which you prefer.

That's how I approach hi-fi too. The P90SA is a cracking bit of kit for the money. The power amps I am less enthralled with but that is personal taste. NVA will not approve of your choice of speakers, but no reason why it won't work with them.

NVA do offer a 30 day trial on their gear and return if you're not content so you can always try and find out.

As others have said, NVA speaker cable is a must, and very good too.

You can do better than the Naim for similar or less money - Croft and Rega for instance but what is your budget ?

You can do better than the Naim for similar or less money - Croft and Rega for instance but what is your budget ?

my original budget was £3600 as we wanted to buy Naim Superuniti 2. But cos I find a cheaper yest still pretty good streaming solution I looking for something else.
But it does not mean I want to spend those money if I dont have to :) And keeping in mind the speakers we have I am not sure if the amp at same price would not be a bit overkill :D
Ideally I would like to stay under £2k

I'd suggest A80's with a P50SA and possibly LS5 cables (unless you need the extra inputs of the P90) for reasons below... Chord cables are basic wire dressed up and sold for more than ten times the cable's real cost via a dealer, who has to stock thousands of pounds worth of product to get the best discount. As long as you're aware of this, then fine, but not for NVA if you want a warranty. Online vendors tend to sell at more realistic prices!

Bigger and potentially more dynamic speakers like the D7's NEED as much good power as you can afford to give them and this was brought home to me just a few days ago, as the soundstage of such speakers just opens up so much when you do - I have heard the D7 by the way and like them, so not guessing here!

I moved from Naim Nait to NVA and have had no regrets - in fact I no longer even think about upgrading the pre or power, just enjoy the music (I may go for a second power supply for the phono stage at some point, but that is another story :) ).
I have quite an inexpensive NVA set up, for your budget, I think that you would be very content.

It's simple really with NVA products:

1. Always use low capacitance speaker cable if using their amps
2. Never ever plug and plug anything in when the system is on
3. Make sure that your interconnects and speaker cables are properly plugged in

...that's it really. They just don't respond well to user error, but otherwise are very reliable products.

I'm not sure what you mean by the second sentence but NVA amplifiers are definitely worth any perceived inconvenience of using their speaker cables in my opinion/experience. I was almost put off trying an AP20 because of the warranty conditions related to the cables, I'm glad I went ahead because I am finding my AP20 to be excellent. I think it sounds much better than the any other amplifier that I had heard up to that point, including more expensive and/or highly respected amps. My interest was piqued after hearing Rich B's A40s at NEBO 6.

It seems rather strange to build a system around your Chord Epic Twin speaker cables. Who knows, you may prefer the NVA speaker cables, they are highly regarded by some in non NVA systems as well.

I dont, but I just bought that pair few weeks back. I am not going to spend another money just cos some system requires specific MUST cables. I have no funds for this.

And the rules and regulations of using their stuff is just to strict and no go for me, sorry

Do not twist, bundle, tie wrap, or run in tubes together any NVA speaker cables. If you do and they are used with NVA amps it will invalidate the amp guarantee.

So maybe I can not have their amp in certain hight or distance or under fluorescent light....or...thank you but no :) this is just to much

There are other products to choose from. If better or not that is other question

I may have some Copland CTA 405 for good money. Anyone have listened to this amp? How would it compare to for example Naim Supernait or Naim Nair XS 2?

Shame I can not listen to it on our speakers but I remember listen to it with Sonus Faber speakers. Not a proper listening session that was.
