View Full Version : beresford 7520 or caiman?
Cheers all,
I'm building a cheap system using an old marantz pm50 amp and a pair of b+w 602s2's to play lossless files (including some 24/96 vinyl rips) from my mac laptop. For now I've been relying on d>a conversion inside the mac but I would like to insert a dac into the chain using the optical out on the mac.
My question is whether with the equipment I have it is worth going for the caiman, or should the basic 7520 (or even 7510) suffice. Would I hear a difference on such a low level system?
Thanks for your input

Keep in mind that the TC-7520 is subject to an AoS member's discount as well;).
Thanks, that will definitely enter the consideration. And I suppose with the discount I could pick up some opamps to narrow the difference between the two.:)
Get some stuffing inside the 602's as well. The standard article booms a bit, but this is easily controllable.

To be honest if I were you I'd just get the Caiman and have done with it.
Nobody ever regretted spending money on quality.
Chris:)
Thanks for the replies.
@ DSJR: What would you use for stuffing? Wool?
@ Stratmangler: Now, that's the kind of advice I like to hear! I hesitate only because that would make the Caiman by far the most expensive piece of kit in the system. Not sure how many people could say that!! Of course, that in itself justifies the expense.

I'd also say get the Caiman. If nothing else,it will stand a few upgrades to the rest of the system!
I used the smaller 601 (original model) for a couple of years and they are very good 'speakers for the money. You have the larger model with the better tweeters - I do not think it is worth padding them out more (sorry Dave) unless you have a really small room. Good, solid stands and a little bit of space behind them (at least 18 inches) is all that is required to get the best out of them.
Regards
I think I'll go for the Caiman as some of you suggest. Thanks for the input.
A sensible choice, Patrick. :)

You'll have to be quick off the mark though. I received the November stock on Monday, and more than 40% of it has already been sold. That's the fastest rate I have ever sold any of my DACs at since I started my business.
I would hazard a guess that the WHF 5 Star review will have helped there, Stan? Though with the web being so searchable many prospective customers will see the praise heaped on your products anyway, including here.
Whatever, well done, and glad you are beating the recession Stan!
