Cherry plinth I think? Very nice - the Nima is reputed to be a really excellent match too.

Nice one Andrew lovely looker. Very different to a (modded) Techie 12XX - what immediate sonic differences have you identified ?

Fabulous looking deck there! I have always liked the Nima arm, good stuff!

First thing to notice is the massive soundstage, voices really leap from the speakers rather than sounding like they are closed in to the restraints of the cabinets. Very, very low noise floor. Also really subtle detail that's often missed is quite apparent but not pushed forward at you, just natural, like how did I never notice that! Bass is strong, tighter and more controlled than the Techy.

Speed stability is always a very good trait of the Techy and it's not lost on the Linn either, if a belt drive deck had a slight increase in w&f compared to the Techy it's certainly not noticeable here, even on sustained piano notes (this is where I was struggling with the Gyro and it just had to go).

It may be a 40 year old design but certainly doesn't sound like it. It boogies all night long without sounding clinical or too analytical and not soft or wooly either. it just has the perfect balance. I've heard a few decks over the years but nothing quite to me sounds like an LP12. I could easily stay up to the very early hours playing this, and probably will.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the techy and kept it longer than any other TT I'd ever owned until some upgrades caused me so much pain. I really wished I'd kept the deck stock, probably would have kept it as a second deck.

It is a cherry plinth yes.

Nice one. Looks superb, Andrew!

Glad that it's hitting the spot and that you feel it's an upgrade over your Techy. It's often swings and roundabouts with these things, when comparing belt vs. direct-drive T/Ts, as the good versions of each all have their admirable and desirable sonic traits.

The most important thing is what your OWN ears are telling you, not what anyone else says, as only you know what you like and what best suits your system. Just out of curiosity though, how far did you take your Techy before moving it on - did you reach the stage of MN bearing/ETP platter/PH PSU, etc, or what? :)

Anyway, enjoy! If the LP12 is keeping you up late at night listening to music, it's clearly doing something right!

Hi Marco, it's me!

I had the wobbly ETP issues if you remember.

I had the MN bearing, Paul Hynes PSU and an Oyaide mat. I then bought the base plate and ETP but had issues.

I then sold it and bought a Gyro SE that I had about a month, just was not happy with the constant speed issues, W&F mainly. I now bought the LINN and am very happy indeed with it, rock steady speed and just an amazing sound, with a massive soundstage but very articulate at the same time.

If I was to compare the three decks for me personally It would be the LP12, then SL and finally behind, very long way behind the Gyro. I had a faulty clamp with the Gyro and Michell tried to infer that I'd damaged it, I'd only had it 2 days before it failed, damaged thread, when I sold the deck I had to buy a new one just so I could sell the deck complete!

Lol - yeah, I do now, Andrew, soz!

Too many things going on here to remember everyone's individual 'jouneys'... Glad you got there in the end, mate. It's an interesting one about the Gyro, though. I've heard Gazjam's sound really superb, to the extent that I could quite easily live with it myself, but like you I've also heard some crap ones. I guess it can only be down to the synergy between the partnering arm and cartridge...

Anyway, enjoy yer 'fruitbox'. The Nima's a great partner for it, as is the Lyra cart. It just shows how important it is with T/Ts to get all the constituent parts working symbiotically, and it's so easy to make a bad move and knock things out of kilter.

So you can now start spending your money on records, rather than hi-fi! ;)

Marco.

I'm happy you like the LP12, I do like the look..... it's a funny old world though because I dumped mp LP12 years ago for a Gyro SE! Never had any speed issues with it and the NC supply plus orbe platter elevated it well past what my LP12 could achieve...in the end it gave way to a GL99 plus a bunch of DD decks that I have cluttering up the spare room!
