hello,

is there anything approximating a rule of thumb on this? I've been revalving my Crofts & the question rears it head.

cheers

From my own personal experience of using Gold Lion valves, the biggest impact sound wise was from upgrading the preamp valves.

Which model Croft kit do you have?

If it's the new type using ECC82/83 then it has to be NOS Mullards IMO. Job done.

many thanks for the comments.

I have a Mega Micro II thoroughly upgraded by Glenn Croft late last year & the 7R monos. both take 12BH7A & ECC83 valves. in terms of 12BH7A-s, I have a pair of Philips ECG JANs & a pair of Tung-Sol black plates. the ECC83-s are Philips Miniwatts vs Brimar CV4004s. I can obviously experiment, the question was designed to establish if there were obvious shortcuts.

I've tried a few Mullards, remain underimpressed. these would be ECC83-s, can't afford the 12BH7A-s.
