Steve,

Is this for a one-off set up, or are you planning to swap headshell/carts from time to time? Assuming that the tonearm spindle to pivot distance is correct (most important bit), then using any standard alignment protractor (Baerwald, Lofgren or Stevenson) will do, as the different formulae have different null points across the record.

For a one off, you could do worse than download and print the free one from vinyl engine

If you do a lot of cartridge set up, then buying a proper alignment protractor is a must. Something like a Feickert or Clearaudio may seem expensive, but set against the cost of a top class TT, it's a small price to get the most out of the system.

Hi Charles.

Yes, i have just had a 750D fitted to my 401 by Alan Towell using the supplied set up protractor. However, i do like to swap out cartridges from time to time which is why i need an appropriate overhang gauge. Thanks for the info.

Steve,

If you're only doing this intermittently, the paper protractor is fine. Alternatively something like this is low cost and should do the job.

I think Steve might be looking for something that is used on the Technics arms, ie the white plastic jig that is used for setting the overhang on the cart?

The technics guage from what I have read online is set 1mm longer than the Jelco arm, maybe you could adapt the gauge for use or manufacture your own, it shouldnt be difficult to do
