Living or dead, male or female.

I'm saying Bogart.

Holy crap Martin, that's a tough question . . . I'll give that some thought?

Groucho Marx. In serious roles, Robert Mitchum, who was about the most laid-back film star ever:

'This is not a tough job. You read a script. If you like the part and the money's OK, you do it. You remember your lines. You show up on time. You do what the director tells you to do. When you finish, you rest and then go on to the next part. That's it.'

Robert de Nero I think probably ticks enough boxes to win here.. Not perhaps on charisma but a damn good actor who can do any role.

He will just have to console himself with his millions of dollars and legion of attractive female fans then, poor bastard.

J.T. Walsh...one of the most naturalistic character actors imo to have walked the planet.
Fantastic in Red Rock West, Breakdown and Pleasantville.

Warren Oates maybe a close 2nd.

As Robert Mitchum said: 'There's just no pleasing some people. The trick is to stop trying'

Gonna have to be Al Pacino, but De Nero was close. His performances in Heat, Dog Day Afternoon and The Godfather are I reckon unmatched. Scent of a Woman was a superb performance too.

I know it's a mainstream choice but I'd probably say Tom Hanks, so many great movies. More recently I've enjoyed Captain Phillips and the fabulous Bridge of Spies.

How, is he your choice like?

He ain't done anywhere near enough to get into top 100 imo.

Pacino ,bogart, mitcham, jimmy Stewart etc all come close. As does Cagney and the duke. I also like matteau and Lemmon a lot

No, I already went for Bogart. I just thought it was funny that you would single him out as one it was not going to be. :)

That was as we discussed him last night..i liked some of his stuff but he is not at that level. The howard hughes film and gangs he was excellent and way above his usual. Seems to have gone back a bit now though.. Think he is trying to be what he is not a bit too much.. Nevertheless im sure he doesnt care about the critics nowadays if ever.

I don't know, I'd say he is the sensitive sort. Best hope he's not reading here.

Her lost a lot of sympathy for me by saying 'Rose' about 500 times too many in Titanic. Did no-one on that whole cast and crew say 'FFS Di-Caprio we all know the girls name now so stop f'king wearing it out'?

I was actually relieved when he dies of hypothermia.

Hope not... I gave him a few bad reviews in my time... He put a horses head in my bed. I ate it and gave it a bad review!

Warren Oates a close second.
