FACT OR FICTION?

read this to the end please:

This is interesting . .. .

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings..

DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.&n bsp;

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and
only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

And now, for Margarine..

Very High in Trans fatty acids.

Triples risk of coronary heart disease .
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance)..

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to butter them up')!

Chinese Proverb: When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others.
Pass the BUTTER PLEASE !

i dont know where this info has come from but technically the yellow spreads we buy eg. flora and buttoli aren't actually margerine.
margerine, as far as i know, was outlawed years back (because it was dangerous to the health of people), the spreads that we buy are just called marg (by the public) because the name stuck, it is infact very different from actual marg

does what you have just said apply to the modern spreads!

(i will happily be corrected on this, it just what i have come to belive.. it might not be the case)

Plausible sounding rubbish! 8 grams of fat per what exactly... gives the game away :) It doesn't take a scientist to read between the lines.

Anyway, I'm a Flora man. Butter's harder to spread and I prefer to taste the Marmite that goes on top! Yum yum!

Just checked our spread (Flora Buttery) and it is described as a vegetable fat spread with buttermilk.

There's also summat about polyunsaturates and omegas 3 & 6.

Doesn't it sound delicious ?

I wouldn't be surprised to find that butter is better for you than the chemistry set glop many of us use to spread on our bread.

Chris:)

Jimmy from "Jimmy's Farm" just up the road made his own spread on TV the other day - ugh!!!

We use an olive oil spread, but i bet that underneath it's the same old veg fat dross. Bearing in mind the small amount we use, butter would be fine....

I saw that too - yuck!

Butter for me, has been for years (we try not to eat anything too processed) though I only ever have it on toast once or twice a week. If I make a sarnie, I usually have a thin spread of mayo, or mix it in (tuna mayo, or grated cheese and red onion with mayo - my favourite!) and don't bother with butter. *rumble* now I'm hungry!

All this Omega stuff is confusing as well. Apparently the omega fats derived from vegetable oils are not good, the body needs the omega fatty acids derived from fish oils which are chemically different and metabolised differently, allegedly,

its like bloody shampoo in my books.. at least i fob all this crap off in the same way i do the nonsence about panten "pro-v" etc
its the same as the anti wrinkle creams! these adverts on the tv always say at the bottom "72% of women agree" when they are talking about how it gets rid of wrinkles... its all shite! if it works then 100% of women would "agree"! i saw a documentary about it, which to be fair i took with as much a pinch of salt as i do the claims... it was very interesting though, they went to a place where they develop these creams and spoke to the scientists, they then showed the footage to a skin expert who said that the claims were technically imposible! you end up wondering who the hell can you trust?!?
these days i put almost all scientific claims about all health foods in the category of marketing bullshit
what get me is that its the same with almost everthing that is available in shops! i am constantly explaining to people in the shop that comparing tv's by there spec is pointless "1,000,000:1 contrast ratio" or "neo pdp panel" its all shite! buy the tv that you like the picture of! people come in and ask me whats better lcd or plasma... LOOK AT THE BLOODY TV AND DECIDE YOUR SELF!! i prefer plasma my slef - the picture is more natural looking ... but its still just an opinion!
the worrying thing is a plasme tv is unlikely to do us any harm with marketing bull crap... its much harder to make an informed decision about foods! especially when even these tv programs that tell us what is bad cant make there mind up!! one minute sugar is bad then salt is the killer.. but no actually its this one type of suger thats bad, so just eat fruit!... but no fruit is bad the acid and suger rots your teeth... just eat vitamin pills then?? we cant eat anything else!... no they are bad to!... vitamin pills bad???? how can that be?? ... i just eat what the fuck i like when i like! lifes to short for all that bullshit!!

Butter every time. Unsalted, natch. I can't think of the last time I bought any other type of spread.

I only use olive oil for cooking too.

Dunno if it's worse for me; my homespun logic says no - as long as it's in moderation. And besides, as someone said to me a few days ago...

'Never trade one of life's pleasures for an extra year dribbling to yourself in a care home'

I liked that.

Right on!! Life is about experience not longevity!! But I would say that I'm only 26!

Or to put it another way: "it's all about the quality of life rather than the quantity".

Or, as was written above the Parthenon in Athens: " Know thyself and everything in moderation".

Thus speaketh someone who has drunk 8.5 units of alcohol today!

That's very restrained of you Barry, after you told us you were down the pub at lunchtime - I'd be on at least double-figures by now if I hadn't only started at 8.00pm!

Apologies to the OP for thread drift, but I can't stand Robbie Williams, so it's ITV for me - how fit was Michelle Pfeiffer back in 1987 when they made Witches of Eastwick? Yummy!

At half past midnight i was winding up my wife playing my choice of music after getting into double figures on units consumed in one evening, spirits will be the ruin of me :eyebrows: and have now made a bacon sarnie complete with brown sauce and more importantly butter on the bread, the wife is still not talking to me as i continue with my self indulgence by catching up on my Jools Holland later recordings on the goggle box this morning:cool: oh well there is always relate:lol:
