I'm very much new to this but am looking to improving my gear. I want to start with the turntable as I currently am using an old Ariston ATT-420 which goes through a Marantz PM6010ose with Sony SS-176E speakers. There is also a Teac Cd player and Denon Cassette deck in the equation. I thought something like a Rega RP1 or RP3 (if funds allow). I'm open to suggestions and also to what amp and speakers I may add in the future. Thanks in anticipation!

Can't go wrong with a Rega but what is your budget ?

Yes a second hand rega would be good. I had a mid range project once, and that was very good for money with a carbon arm and a speedbox psu

It's all down to budget. I agree that as a sensible turntable that is 'proper Hi-Fi', the Regas take some beating and are simple and reliable. Obviously if you spend more there are other options.

£329 including arm cartridge & phono stage. Heard one recently sounding perfectly fine.

Very interesting little T/T, which seems like good value for money, but in the grand scheme of things, is it any better than a Rega? If not, I'd be tempted to support a British company :)

A Thorens TD150 should beat a Rega and for far less money even with a decent arm budgeted in.

I'd go along with that. My old TD150 with Decca International arm sounded remarkably good.

Most Thorens I have encountered are way past their best unless you are able to set them up, which makes getting a Linn to bounce properly seem like childs play!

Have to say the bounce requirement is well overrated imho. I set mine up with little bounce and it sounded better for it. as long as its level , has a new belt and you put a good thick base on, then Thorens stuff is great. a bit of sound deadening inside helps too.

there is cheap 2nd hand Rega P1 on Gumtree (https://www.gumtree.com/p/record-players-turntables/rega-p1-turntable-/1161896899) if you like

No one yet mentioned a Technics SL 1210 !

Pick up one without any mods for not a lot then improve it when you feel like it or have some dough
Sky is the limit

Goldring GL 75, or Dual in the 1200 series. The Duals are underrated imo. Dual 1228 with Shure M 95, or Ortofon VMS 20e mk2 delivers well beyond expected.

Thanks for all the great advice folks. Armed with your knowledge I visited my local hi-fi emporium and purchased a Rega RP1 with performance pack. I am well pleased with the result. Happy days!
