Hello all,

I'm a newbie audiophile wannabe piecing together a decent system on a shoestring and hoping some of the more indulgent among might have some advice to spare.

I'm cobbling together a system that will look something like this: Mac with Lossless and 24/96 files > optical out > DAC or Squeezebox > old Marantz amp that I'm cleaning up > B+W 602s2's that I picked up on ebay last week.

I've got several questions for you all that I'll ask if necessary after a deeper look through the forums.

Welcome Patrick - I'm not a "Squeezebox Man" (I went for a Soundbridge) but I wasn't aware they have an optical input - that said, I would expect a standalone DAC to sound better than the Squeezebox alone - maybe you mean stream to the Squeezebox, which is connected via optical out to a DAC? (Optical connection would be slightly less desirable than coaxial connection by the way, if the equipment has that option.)

Marco - I listen to all sorts. Lots of jazz (mostly pre-1965 or so), rock, classical, Brazilian, reggae, blues, etc.

Alex UK - I must say I've not really looked into the connectivity of the squeezebox solution. I've read much debate on the merits of it's interior DAC, so it must have some digital in. USB only, perhaps?
