Mission 774 tone arm

Bit of advice I have a mission 774 tone arm it sometimes does not lift when you want to lift it after playing one side of an album it's the first time I've had this tone arm I think the rega rb 303 I had on my rp6 was fluid damped and I never had this problem:scratch:

This may seem obvious, but is the arm aligned correctly so that the lifter pad/platform is still under the arm tube when the stylus reaches the run out groove at the end of a side?

Geoff yes the lifter platform is under the arm it does however seem to be down on that side

Is there any adjustment on the arm lifter or will I need to disassemble the tone arm and put new oil in it

If the fit of the platform onto the thin lifter shaft is slack, then it can sag out of level. I believe Ali Tait had one that was a bit loose and sorted it. Might be an idea to have a word with him.

I've not actually had the lifter mechanism apart on a 774. Never needed to. But I doubt it would be too tricky to sort out.

If the lifter is loose, take it off and use a dab of superglue to fit it solidly in place. Make sure it's level as the glue sets.

Ali you mean were the lifter arm goes into the cross bar which goes into the fluid damper it doesn't seem to be loose here :scratch:or did you mean the bar that he arm rests on

Yes the bar the arm rests on, it will just pull off. See iff it's wobbly, if so put some glue on it.

Proably a good idea to change the lifter oil too, not done mine yet either.

The arm rest is rock solid could need the oil changed in the damper al what cart are you using in your arm I got a zyk r100 yatra cheap used gonna try that with firebottles new head amp the arm has an ortofon vms20e mk2 cart in at the mo but don't no the condition that's why I'm swapping carts I'm changing the belt on the thorens as well it looks past its best

Currently using a Denon DL S1. Sounds fantastic, even better since an Audio Origami rewire which made a large improvement. Still scratching my head wondering how changing a wee bit of wire can make so much difference..

Al I'm in the church of wire as well Steve petchs crusader 3s at nebo 6 were rewired with silver litz cable wow what a difference that made ps al I've heard the denon cart you have sounds magical I'm bringing some denon po4400a monoblocks to nebo 7 the sound from those is creamy smooth and that's just with there matching pre I have a chevron paradox pre to take over duties got it from a wammer we,ll see what it sounds like with that in the mix.At the moment I'm using my mate Petes jvc deck using a 2m red still sounds good one day I'll try the denon dl s1 bit pricey bet it's worth the spondoolys better try an old Scottish trick and get the short arms and long pockets:lol:

LOL. Aye, I've always been in the camp of wires make a difference, but it's the scale of the difference that amazes me..

Might be worth trying my Slagle AVC pre wth the Denons.

Definately was for me. Went for the Ikeda silver wire. Big improvement, I now know what a "holographic sound stage" sounds like. Big improvement in soundstaging and imaging, the soundstage seemed to double in depth. Detail was hugely improved as well, I'm hearing things I've never heard before in albums I thought I knew well.

Not cheap on the face of it for a wee bit of wire, but I've heard far less of an improvement spending more elsewhere.

How the hell can a bit of wire make this much difference??

My money is on the Yatra outdoing any Denon.

It would be an interesting comparison Ali. But the Yatra is very talented. Think of a blend of Decca, SPU and then some and you'll not be far out soundwise.

Ok here's my impressions.

It gets close to the Denon, but doesn't match it for soundstaging and detail. The Denon is better, but it's not a million miles away either. Having just seen what they are selling for though, it's a bloody bargain!

I'd be curious what some booteek film caps would do, might be a different story then. Probably need a bigger box though to fit them in.
