Hulloo

I am trying to fit a new laser assembly into my Marantz CD6000.

The unit arrived yesterday and I fitted it, and it was dead, which I double checked by taking it back out and refitting the old skipping one, which confined to work. A replacement should arrive next week. On the bright side, I am getting quite good at soldering.

:)

My problem is that in the process three of the rubber grommets that secure it to the rest of the mech have split a bit, and I wondered if any of you might either have a set going spare, or know where I could get some in the UK?

They look like this:

Thanks in advance!

Cant help with the grommets, but did you remember to unsolder the static protection link on the laser?

Tell me more...?

When I tried to fire it up, it just read "NO DISC" and there was no spinning noise. It just seemed dead. Would not doing anything to the static protection link cause this?

I don't think there is such a solder point to remove, but am happy to be shown otherwise!

I think this clip I the end of the ribbon connector serves the same purpose?

I just found this article which talks about the occasional need to finely adjust a potentiometer:

http://www.hifigear.co.uk/blog/marantz-cd63se-laser-transport-mechanism-replacement/

If this is incorrectly set, does anyone know if that would result in the "NO DISC" and lack of spinning in the CDP?

If so, how should I adjust it - I assume it is simply turning it with a small philips driver, but which direction and how far, or is it just a question of trial and error?

Thanks

What's that mess of a solder cleanup all about then?

That's the residue from a tamper proof sticker that I took off, in case it was hiding the solder point.

Do you have any of the rubber grommets, or know where I might get some?

UPDATE:

I know you are all very interested in this.

The update is that they sent me a new unit which I fitted this afternoon.

Now it powers up and spins, but TOC READING just sits there for too long, and then switches to ERROR.

I adjusted the potentiometer right through its range, and the only change was the amount of time before the ERROR popped up.

Is this a second DUD laser unit?

I'm losing patience a bit.

Hopefully that wasn't the Pot on the Laser itself you were adjusting. That's the 'Laser Power' Adjustment and should never be touched. You may well have damaged the new Laser in so doing.

Check the Height of the Platter compared to the original Laser Block. I think you'll find the new one sits much higher so the Disc will be sitting too far away from the Laser Lens.
I realise the Lens has some travel but the new ones seem to be sat much too high.
Carefully remove the Platter and remove the Glue from the hole. If you don't you won't be able to push it down far enough.
Re-fit the Platter to the same height as the original and so long as you haven't damaged the Output Diode you should be OK.

Thanks James.

I adjusted the pot as the article linked above described a similar issue and said that this was one way of solving it, which is why I asked about that earlier in the thread.

The laser seller has very reasonably said that they will refund me, and that it is of course very rare that these units are defective, and to have two defective is unheard of.

Even so, the motor sounds awful and I am 99.9% sure that it has been fitted correctly.

I have checked the platter heights and they are all the same on all three examples.

I have now run diagnostics in service mode.

The three physical tests it runs (MODES 1-3) all sound really bad, wheezing failing mechanic sounds.

Then when diagnostics are run it comes up with ERROR 07 (SUB CODE ERROR) and then ERROR 10 (RADIAL ERROR)

Does anyone have any clues on what these mean, or who I might ask?

I think we are at "buy a new CDP" stage, but when this is working it is a lovely player, and in very very fine condition for a 15 year old machine, not forgetting that they seem to fetch up to £200 on eBay (it is a CD6000OSE KI that were RRP of £500 back in 2001). Be a shame to not get her working again. I remember it blew me away when I first got it home.
