I bought both my kids UDM-30s when they went to uni. They're brilliant little units, nice sounding and nicely built. Both suffered from the volume control problem which is caused by grease in what is actually a rotary encoder, not a pot. Taking the encoder apart and cleaning it takes about half an hour. No parts needed, just a clean cloth.
The original Denon matching speakers were made by Mission, but I don't know what these ones are. No experience of the cassette deck either, but Denon were always pretty good with cassettes.

Nicely done, James. If I'd had that, I could have cut it down to 15 minutes!
The original Denon matching speakers were made by Mission...
And very good they are too, I might add ;)
From my last era in the industry, the Denon/Mission SCM50 speakers had some bass projection, the 30's popping if you weren't careful. I forget the exact models, but the Mission 701? model also sounded great with the DM30 series.
By the way, these little units had a preamp output on them. Not sure how useful this could be since compactness was the reason why they were bought. Sonics were great as long as the speakers were efficient :)

Not surprised ! Such cheapskates out there, they were £20 BIN yet 2 people had made "best offers"
How are these Trent's? I only know the later versions with the newer drivers but yet never heard them in person, only the York's and the floor standers Avon's.

I've heard them against wharfedale Diamond IV and preferred the Wharfies by a margin. The Castles were a bit boring in comparison. Not as good at higher volumes either, in fact the owner destroyed the bass drivers playing them too loud, he did not have that problem with the Diamonds. I do like speakers with a bit of sturm und drang, though. Still a total steal at £20.
That's funny, I don't have that much of a consideration for the Diamond's...

I know the feeling! I had a pair in my late teens/early 20s and sold them for various reasons, but regretted it as soon as I watched the new owner drive away with them. I bought another pair about 5 years ago and fully refurbished them. They were at Scalford 2011 and they were great!
I have now sold them but am not so sad this time as I have a pair of 3090s on the 'to do' pile. It's quite a big pile as I'm sure you can imagine...

Looks interesting, I wasnt aware they ever did this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Van-Damme-Silver-Limited-Edition-Hi-Fi-studio-speaker-cables-2X6-LC-OFC-5-meters-/131037884132?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Other&hash=item1e82776ee4
It may be OK, Van Damme stuff tends to be, but I've found most OFC silver plated speaker cables add an unwanted brightness or brashness, as per QED Silver Anniversary!

Hi Bev.
You been having another of your low profile spells? Not seen much from you recently.
Anyway, the DMT10s use a very different driver to the 12s and 15s which I believe have paper pulp cones. The ten inch DMT 10 has a similar cone to the later System 1000, i.e. plastic, but to my ears sound better than the System 1000, which I've owned. They give very fine results.

I believe the 12's used a plastic cone and the 15's paper..... and I THINK I had the 12's.... I can only say that at the time I was unimpressed and I paid £1K for them then.... Things may be different now though as I have found that speakers I thought rather average then (and that includes the Heresy's!!) I now find I am impressed with.... maybe be ears have changed a bit over the years....

I remember Practical HiFi doing a feature review on the entire Chartwell range, including the PM400's, back in the early 80's (may have been the late 70's thinking about it) and they rated them very highly :)

Yep, and people needn't be scared of refoaming them... I've read accounts of them not sounding them same afterwards & can tell you now that is complete codswallop. If you buy the correct surrounds [not any 8" surround will fit!] and take your time they'll be perfect.
Fred @ Audiofriends/Goodhifi now has stocks of the very same replacement surrounds Audionote sell which are a perfect fit & very supple... They are as good as the originals are far as I can tell. Here's one I did the other day:

You could try sending a message to the seller asking if YOU can arrange a courier collection. The worst he can do is say "no". If you use a UK courier it should be possible to collect from here to ship to Portugal. UK sellers don't generally like shipping abroad because they have heard of bad experiences when sending to places like Italy and Russia.
I usually go with Parcel2Go and no problems so far, will try to convince him.

around 20'' wide, i don't have room to use mine
{A pair here that shows the units}
Andre, they're not that big afterall, what about the total weight?
The Barbarian
18-11-2013, 17:20
i know 20'' don't seem big but being virtually a cube they are big, i can't lift one on my own without pulling my back out.. I'll try find the owners manual when i get home see what they weigh. They come with low level bolt on metal stands {terminals are underside}, or you could get them with a fancy period grill & queen anne style legs..
Not my cup of tea (queen anne legs) altough I've seen them like that in a couple of occasions. Probably will never lay my hands in a pair though.

Although the cabinets are like the Chatsworths, I'd say by the position of the 12" cut out that they are Audiometrics and don't use a dual concentric driver, so basically, they're worth peanuts!
I used to have a Series 4S, converted from EL34 to 6550 operation. It was a good sounding amp.
