Just pulled the trigger on a thorens td160 super with a mission 774 tonearm this arm is low mass any suggestions for a cart that would have good synergy with this arm:scratch:

Blimey. You got that cheap (just looked :)) Looks very nice.

You can use virtually any 1/2" mount cartridge in the Mission 774. There's no limit to how high the quality either. I use a £1200 MC in mine. It sounds fabulous. The 774 can just as easily be used with a Decca London or even just a £50 MM.

There you go Steven, best answer ever - any cart goes. Try one of the ZYX carts, said to be very good carts indeed (all of them) and Geoff would love you to and report back :)

Cheers Geoff looks like the sky's the limit.Only asking as some people are saying the arm doesn't like carts with low compliance such as a denon dl103

No idea Steven but Geoff will know. All i do know is that I only read good things about them. They are meant to be a lot of cart for what you pay and a 'surprise'. Geoff will elaborate ;)

I've read even the entry R50 Bloom H at around £500 is very good indeed and as I say a 'surprise'. I havnt had experience but Geoff certainly has

The 774 will work with high or low compliance carts. The general, but not absolute rule is that high compliance carts will not require the use of the fluid damping facility, but low compliance carts, like MCs and Deccas will likely benefit. As it happens I use a bit of damping all the time. There are ways of adjusting the amount of damping.

The DL-103 and DL-103R work fine in it. I've had both. The entry level ZYX is the R50 Bloom H at around £450. I have four different ZYXs including the Bloom and they are perfectly suited to this arm. The Denons and ZYXs are lowish compliance. My very high compliance ADCs work just as well in the 774.

Amazing value, that. Given the current price of 774s, you've pretty much got the Thorens for free!

None on eBay at the moment. They do crop up occasionally, but really the standard lid is not much cop. It's Polystyrene and breaks easily. They are invariably scratched too.

Why not get an Acrylic one made? This German firm price reasonably and ship to the UK I believe: http://www.sora-shop.com/Customized-Products/Custom-Turntable-Cover.html

Denon DL S1. Sounds great on mine.

vinyljunky
18-03-2016, 19:50
Ali I've heard the dl s1 is a low output moving coil so I will need a sut or phono stage with adjustable gain the reviews are spectacular what would one expect to pay for one of these beauties :D

Not sure, quite hard to get hold of now. Marco put a link up to a trusted seller, perhaps he can oblige again.

Just fitted mine to my other 774 freshly returned from Audio Origami where it was rewired with Ikeda silver cable. Sounds stunning with the Denon.

Steve, you could always try a Firebottle head Amp.:D

o and if you can't get a rocking horse shit DL-S1, you could try the Denon 301 Mk2 - half the price and 90% of the DL-S1.

Whatever you do, if you are going for a low output MC, do not skimp on the SUT. A poor one is guaranteed to destroy the MC experience. Avoid cheap examples.

If you are interested. Some ZYX impressions here: http://www.stereomusicality.co.za/prod_cart_zyx.html

Yeah, I worry about what I'll replace mine with, cos they'll probably be unobtanium by the time mine wears out.

Good advice. A decent head amp will give you what a good SUT will, for less money too.

Seen a denon dl 301 mk2 for 225 pounds sounds reasonable for a low output mc jimbo the Firebottle head amp sounds interesting I had the Firebottle 2 two box phono stage and it was sublime but then some twat decided to borrow it without asking thankfully there in prison now we're they belong :steam::steam::steam::steam::steam::steam::steam:: steam:

I am listening to them both now and they produce some superb sound especially for the money. Not sure what the Firebottle Head amp will cost - probably pennies:lol: I think Alan said he was looking at £150 originally but it may be tad more if he gets new box.

My Firebottle head amp is off to a mate tomorrow but I am sure if you speak to Alan he will make sure your on his list for demos.

Geoff, I can honestly say the 301 Mk2 is stunning in my system - probably suits my tonearm and certainly gels with Firebottles Head amp.

I agree with you I don't think the 103 would have been the right choice. :)

Oliver, the DL-103 is a superb cartridge, but it's not easy getting the best from it. Depends how keen you are going down the road of doing precisely that :)

Marco.

walpurgis

I've used a few DL-103s in the 774. It works fine, but sounds best with a fair bit of damping.

Not sure what you mean Oli.

Nothing wrong with trying a DL-103. It'll work fine in the 774 and there's nothing to touch it at the price.

My preference is for the 103R, but others seem to like the base 103.

Just a thought. If you dont want to splash out on an MC phono stage or SUT you could look at one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152016668975?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I've had three of these. They're a high output MC and work into the MM input. Very musical and definitely have a touch of the proper MC magic and are also amazingly quiet on surface noise.

(quite tempted to get it myself actually)

At that price it's worth grabbing I'd say. It's a serious bargain if it works OK. £1200 new.

If it's worn get a new diamond put on by Goldring. They'll do it at a fair price.

What would be the typical lifespan of a Zyx r100 yatra cart in other words how many hours might it be capable of.Also is this cart a good tracker.

Still a major bargain!

That's about what you'd pay for a used R50 Bloom.

What phono stage and/or SUT will you be using with it?
