The below are fairly cheap - I don't know how cheap is cheap to you..

Arcam Alpha 7se, 8 or preferably 8se or 9. FMJ replacements are good as well. Alpha 5 is too old now really, but is updateable by Avondale Audio and it has a good mechanism.

Denon 1015 - surprising if you can find one and the current 520 is excellent and basically 'honest' in sound.

MF original X-CD, but they go for more than they're really worth now as things have improved somewhat in low cost players.

Rega (original) Planet is a very trusted used buy - use with Klotz interconnects and you won't go wrong as the music comes before the 'HiFi.'

Loads of others obviously, but these I know well.

Less than fifty notes? Most will be second-rate plastic jobbies I fear. Sony and Technics (Mash) players may be a good buy though, but it's pot luck here. Maybe a Rotel 855 is down to this price now?

hmm...I do not really want to spend much for CD as I barely use it these days...most of the time I play vinyl or Tidal HiFi or locally stored FLAC/WAV albums

I paid £35 for my CDP off fleabay, it's quite good, apparently the 590 was worse, but I only heard about that I haven't tried one.

Get a Philips CD753. £15 - £30 on ebay or the kind of thing people will throw out or give away on freecycle. But pretty good sounding and recommended as a bit of a bargain for a budget player.

Find a decent Used DVD player these often have a ...surprisingly Good... CD/Redbook playback section.
Almost free New let alone used.
Find a used OPPO if you can? those put Many bespoke CD transports/Dac's to shame.
Unlikely widely available outside of North America though

Just bought a Philips CD713 off French ebay for €15 plus postage. Uses 'Bitcheck Conversion' which I have not read up about before but looks an interesting technique.

Lukasz of Lampizator fame has done many mods on this type of product and is partly why I bought it.

Plenty of room inside for 'lampization'. The first mod will be changing the opamp and we'll see where we go from there.

If you are thinking of getting this player go for the 723, as that has remote.

The Linn Mimik is quite a nice, and musical sounding CD Player.

Another vote for the original planet!

Yamaha DVD-2700 is a universal disc player with excellent CD playback. Plus high res files can be burnt to DVD with one of cirlinca's programs and played to great effect. Plus it doesnt recognise DVD-A watermarking. Plus as yet my one is proving more reliable than the three Denon 2900's that preceded it. And sounds better.

I have had a Pioneer Stable Platter PD-S705 for the last 10 years or so. Great backup to my Squeezebox Touch and Raspberry Pi (with Wolfson Card) streaming solutions.

Reads even very scratched up discs and reads TOC fast too. Highly recommended and Lampizator bloke likes these too - best £35 I spent for a mint example. Has Display off and Analogue / Digital switch off options so makes a great CD transport. Cheap eBay example here :-

I just picked up a Denon DCD-520AE I bought on eBay for £65 (no remote).

It was intended to be a stop gap as my previous CDP is poorly, but it's really bloody great.

Seriously, give one a listen, at about £140 new it's an absolute bargain.

Thanks for this, but £140 is 3-4 times above the money I would like to spend ;)

I would suggest you make a followed search on eBay for something you fancy (ie "Marantz CD" as there are loads of them and the brand has a fairly good reputation for decent CDPs) and just wait until one comes up that takes your fancy.

Here's another CD52 right on your budget, and the sticking drawer will most likely be very easily fixable, possibly just by cleaning the mechanism. CDPs with easily fixed faults can be where you might find a good bargain (ie a new laser can be bought for £20 and easily swapped out on most CDPs) if you are willing and capable to open them up and fettle.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Marantz-MKII-CD52-CD-Player-/281966492123?hash=item41a68339db:g:fGoAAOSwu1VW5x2 1

or this one is even cheaper:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MARANTZ-CD-42-MKII-CD-PLAYER-INC-QUALITY-PHILIPS-CDM-4-19-TRANSPORT-VG-CONDITION-/201542253641?hash=item2eecdabc49:g:hDUAAOSwh-1W5-XW

etc.

Patience is everything in eBay bargain hunting.

Hi Rikardo,
Much of the problem when searching for a half decent CD player for peanuts is knowing the models that were very good but little talked about. The market was flooded with these in the late 80s/early 90's but because they were run of the mill Phillips/Technics/Sony etc. badged you never saw them reviewed in the hi-fi mags even though they'd hold up well against the Arcams and the Rotels of the time. I'm quite addicted to the sound of the old players with the TDA1541 DAC and you can find a full list of those here, so have a scan through and see if you can pick up any of these from Ebay. I've never heard a player that sounded poor with one of these DAC chips so you can't really go far wrong for the money:
http://www.dutchaudioclassics.nl/Overview-Philips-TDA1541-based-cdplayers/

As an example I picked up a Phillips CD582 from Gumtree for £30 last year. It was a bit tatty but in perfect working order and has all of the musicality of the Naim CDi I was trying to restore at the time. It wasn't as refined as the Naim of course, but still a very enjoyable sounding player.

THIS IS A KILLER PLAYER BY ALL MEANS AND WITHOUT THE RESERVATION "for such a cheap and ugly player.".
Cover it with a rug and play it to the audiophiles and they will say Wadia 860. Or Opera Droplet5.

Thank you everyone for suggestions and especially to Richard @lovejoy for the informative post and link which leads me into this player

Exemplary work there that man. You don't seem to be able to go far wrong with these Philips players. I'm sure that if you'd reboxed the innards of these things, marketed them with a more audiophile brand name, they'd have been sold for far more money and would be highly sought after even today (Wadia anyone?). Always nice to see good old units brought out of retirement to give a new lease of life to as well. The ultimate in recycling. I hope it gives you many hours of enjoyable music. I'm now intrigued to try a 1549 based player myself ;-).

So here is a little transformation of the old Philips CD753 with TDA1549 DAC

http://snag.gy/Vtun1.jpg
http://snag.gy/JC53t.jpg

I did not like the main power cable going directly into the player so I decided to fit IEC connector with little switch

Before

After

http://snag.gy/JC53t.jpg
http://snag.gy/k83VG.jpg

Internal fuse is bypassed

http://snag.gy/Tc49O.jpghttp://snag.gy/zBfjr.jpg

And as I needed to cut into the main cover and chassis I ended to respray the whole init

http://snag.gy/ZOcS1.jpg

Thank you everyone for suggestions and especially to Richard @lovejoy for the informative post and link which leads me into this player

That is just a little simple modification for now. I am not sure if I going to modify any internal electronics or just leave it as it is now.

Anyone can suggest cheap replacement for transformer in this player? maybe a toroid transformer? This original making noticeable noise when music is off and its in stand by mode.
I did fitted IEC plug with mains switch but sometimes I am just too lazy to turn it OFF at the back so I would like to leave it in stand by mode. But because of that bloody noise, I can not. It drives me crazy :D

Get som rubber between the trafo and the chassis.

doubt it going to help but I may give it a try. This trafo is prop buzzing and the two screws are really tight.
I give it a shot tomorrow, nice day off :)
