Firstly, apologies if this amp is pre-1990 - I don't think it is!

Has anyone any experience of these amps? Is it worth hanging on to?

I got it from a Cash Converter (or similar) about 10 years ago and just use it with some Canon S-50 speakers to play my iPhone through in the dining room.

It's a good looking beast - VU meters (who doesn't like those?) and rack-mount handles. Only down side - nasty plastic clip speaker terminals.

Carver gear was ok, short lived distribution in the UK mean't the brand didn't really gain any significant foothold. This was the bread and butter gear, not the uber highend stuff, Silver 7s, Amazing speakers etc.

I haven't heard any of this gear in so long I can't really say how it compares to modern gear, but if its still working ok I think you would have to spend a reasonable amount to better it.

Whilst I know nothing about your amp, I have owned some of the Canon 'Mushroom' speakers, having used them as surrounds in an AV set up.

They can be bettered very easily for not much outlay.

The Canon speakers were reviewed in an early edition of Hi Fi World, back when they were not afraid to give a bad review. They panned them. In the following issue a Director of Canon wrote a 'right to reply' piece and they panned that as well.

From memory they were not cheap, about £300 new circa 1992, so £500 plus in today's money.

I held off saying, but back in the day when I heard them one word lept to mind and it began with a C and ended with a P, with two letters between. These are very poor speakers, very poor imho.

Thanks for all that.

I don't think the Canon speakers are that bad, but in the room where I have this setup they're ideal.

Point taken though, I'm moving soon and this amp is likely to be the basis for a second system (sounds like it'll be good enough) and I'll get some better speakers then.

The Cash Converters in Beeston have a couple of pairs of decent speakers in at the moment.

Is there a Cash Converters near The Market Square in Nottingham?

I don't think there is, perhaps you meant the one in Beeston?
