I have had an Analogue Works Turntable 1 (prototype) for over a year now, and am still concerned that I still cannot get accurate speed consistently. Not to knock Analogue Works at all, it is indeed a very fine turntable, but I simply cannot get the right speed without trying multiple times, even after upgrading to the Wave Mechanic.
I have done everything they have advised...changed the oil, ensured the turntable is level, let the Wave Mechanic "warm up" for 30 minutes etc. Sometimes it works on first try (33rpm), then when I change the LP side it could take up to 20 times before the speed is accurate. Funny thing is I am so used to it that I can tell immediately when the speed is right. A lot of the time it will eventually just grind to a halt.
I think the turntable is great, but the speed accuracy is just frustrating. Does anyone have any further tips on what I could do? I know that from a design perspective this is similar to the Nottingham Analogue turntables...does anyone have these same issues? If I cannot sort this out I am worried that I will just get another turntable. I spent a good bit of money getting the Wave Mechanic, as I have always had problems with the original power supply the turntable came with. The original power supply was always way too fast, and no way to change it, which is why I upgraded to the Wave Mechanic. Anyway as I said no disrespect to the vendor as the turntable is great, but the speed stability is just putting me off.
dont know the unit tbh. I take it it has an off board psu. is it a manual adjustment?

It is a belt driven turntable. The Wave Mechanic controls the speed. You turn a dial on the Wave Mechanic to affect the speed. The speed is 100% accurate when the platter is spinning at the right speed...no need to adjust the speed. It is simply a "lottery" as to when I will get the right speed...sometimes it will justt grind to a halt, other times it will go too slowly, then other times it will be perfect. Btw you have to push the platter, like Nottingham Analogue turntables.
wave mechanic is the 50hz sync I think. It may be the problem, if its not putting out a stable 50... maybe need to get someone to check it on an oscilloscope

You are right is is 50hz. Don't know what my options are in Aberdeen but I will consider your advice. I thought it was maybe a faulty pulley or belt but have not spent the extra money to test it out.
without any knowledge of the tt i can only suggest testing all the bits and see if you get right voltage from psu, hz out of the other bit of it(while under tension), check pulleys are not too tight or slipping, belt, bearing etc. matter of elimination.:)
You are right is is 50hz. Don't know what my options are in Aberdeen but I will consider your advice. I thought it was maybe a faulty pulley or belt but have not spent the extra money to test it out.

Looks like a great bit of kit Scott, however I am not willing to spend another £500. The Analogue Works Wave Mechanic now costs nearly £800, £300 more than what I paid for it in September last year. Kit at this price should work, which makes me think that I am doing something wrong, or have a faulty turntable part ie pulley etc. When it works, it works extremely well.
I will keep tinkering and experimenting.

The Wave Mechanic has fixed voltage but the front panel knob adjusts frequency, for fine speed adjustment, so it's not 50Hz as such (actually, the Premotec AC motors work best at 60Hz). The Wave Mechanic is an excellent bit of kit, but Martin Bastin designed two versions, designed specifically for two types of Premotec AC motor used by Nottingham Analogue. I'm not sure which motor is in the Turntable 1, but it is possible that you have the wrong version of the Wave Mechanic. If the Wave Mechanic was bought from Divine Audio, it's very unlikely that they sold the wrong version, though. Also possible is a motor fault; also that the motor has somehow been wired incorrectly.
Something is clearly not right here - what do Analogue Works/Divine Audio say?

Ah, does he. Well in that case I would hazard a guess that the motor has a capacitor on it (at the motor and not in the external power supply) to create the ninety degree phase shift and that is at fault. The motor itself can't exhibit this fault (it could, of course, be faulty but just not in this way). Faults in the the rest of the system, belt, bearing etc. Would have to extremely serious to be the cause of such gross speed issues and wouldn't vary in the way described. So, in summary, I strongly suspect a dry solder joint or ageing electrolytic capacitor soldered at the actual motor.

Dont think it was the same fault though. Is seems that the wave psu is fighting something else. As mark says a faulty cap in tt side could be the problem

You've had a turntable for over a year and it has never had consistent rotational speed, spent a not inconsiderable sum getting an external PSU to fix a problem that shouldn't be in evidence, and you still think it's a great piece of kit :scratch:
Some people are easily pleased.
Whoever supplied you with that turntable has sold you a faulty piece of kit, prototype or not, and they should have fixed your problem or refunded to in full by now.
You should not have had to purchase a Wave Mechanic PSU.
The turntable should have been consistent with rotational speed right from the off.
Go back to the turntable supplier and tell them to sort it out or refund you.
I hope you have evidence of communications and advice with and from the dealer, because this might end up going to the small claims court.
I'm afraid I have to agree.

I know the people at Analogue Works and can't understand how this has not been resolved, since they are friendly, helpful and honest.
My earlier comment regarding different versions of the Wave Mechanic is not quite relevant in relation to the Analogue Works TT1 - Martin Bastin has indeed designed different models of the Wave Mechanic that have twin phase outputs for decks like the NA Dais (I have one here) but IIRC the one we're talking about here has a precisely generated single phase output, and therefore still relies on a capacitor to achieve the necessary phase shift at the motor. So, my finger of suspicion would point, in the first instance, to that capacitor being either defective or simply loose in its connector block. It would be helpful to see the wiring connections in the base of the TT1's motor pod.

First time I've come across this company.
Having said that if it preceded the Wave mechanic it could only be the motor in this case OR and this has happened before, is the ball bearing missing from the housing? I read on Vinyl Engine some time ago a similar problem on a S/H Gyrodec and the ball bearing was missing!

I don't believe it has a ball in the bearing.
These turntables are IIRC, based on the Fletcher turntables and should run to speed without any problem, with or without a Wave Mechanic. Even a rock bottom budget turntable will run to speed without grinding to a halt. This one definitely appears to be faulty and should be returned to the stockist for repair or replacement.
Contact the seller - Sale of Goods act will cover you on this one. All the above advice is correct - it should work, end of. If not, it's either faulty or unfit for purpose, and given the reputation of the manufacturer the former is most likely. Any claim under SOG must be with the retailer though.

As do I, but I'm not convinced. Perhaps he meant at the very low torque levels the NA decks use, almost at the point of stall.

Not really - don't Linn sell the motors with different size pulleys already attached to suit the relevant frequency and rotational speed?

I have a Nottingham Analogue Space Deck which is a spin with the hand to start deck and it just works at the right speed. The motor is designed to only spin at the correct speed. Very occasionally when I first got it (25 years ago now!) it would catch at half speed, but I now know how much effort to put into spinning it. I would agree that the motor and not the power supply is at fault.
NAS is all but ignored here sadly, but Tom designed the deck to operate on minimum motor drive thus keeping vibration down, hence the need to push the platter to start it rotating.

Indeed.
His view was that if the motor has enough power to start a high mass platter spinning then that power is going to impact on the sound. That's a view I agree with.
All that dicking about with suspension is just to avoid this problem. I've yet to hear a better record player (apart from the NAS Mentor that Tom made me listen to when I was buying the Space Deck, but that was too much money!). I've compared this deck side by side with a fully pimped up Sondek and a PT Too and wouldn't swap.
Tom got it right in my opinion.
Time moves on - and I speak as a former Mentor owner twenty years ago (long story, but I loved it)! Many ways of spinning a vinyl record, but somehow, a higher mass deck does work very well for me.
The PT was actually a very good and neutral deck, with an excellent bass performance, let down by frail build and unreliability - probably if abused... The LP12, despite unchanging appearance, has had everything changed in its build since I bought my Mentor with Mentor arm and Decca Microscanner in 1988 and it's much closer in sound than it was back then, but look at the price asked for the LP12 today? Now repaired, I still have the Decca, which is hoping to one day mate up with an NAS 'graphite' platform which was all but designed for it...

It's all about enjoying music - if it works for you go for it. If you have £1,000 to spend I'd always say to spend £500 on the kit and £500 on records - you'll enjoy it more that way!
Yeah, the LP12 is crazily expensive these days. They can sound absolutely stunning, but they're fiddly and, in my opinion, overpriced. Each to their own though. I met Ivor Tiefenbrun once at a hifi show. Nice chap.
None of that does much to help the OP and his speed problem though.

A little update. I have done further testing with the Wave Mechanic by increasing the speed bit by bit. Even at higher speeds it is still a lottery as to when the speed is accurate. I am so used to this that I can visually see when everything is perfect. I have let the Wave Mechanic "warm up" for an hour and a lot of the time it will be perfect, however as soon as I flip and change the side it will go back to being too slow. It will take several spins again until it is accurate.
Yes I did get the Wave Mechanic from Divine Audio...it is not the "usual" Wave Mechanic but one adopted for the Analogue Works turntables. Let me be honest and straight it has never been my intention to "call out" anybody, go to small claims court etc. When everything is perfect the turntable is great, however it is the task of getting there that is the problem. I will gladly keep the turntable if the speed issues are resolved.
I have been in touch with the owner in the past and have done everything that was advised. The only reason I asked here was to get some first hand, quality advice on other options, or people that have had first hand experience with the turntable and the Wave Mechanic. I have been in touch with the owner again and await a response.
So is there a capacitor at the motor then? And if there is you are sure the connections are good no it is the correct value/not faulty?
If you don't think any of the above is relevant then it's definitely a fault with the Wave Mechanic and will have to be fixed.

Yes, as Grant suggests, it should achiever correct speed within a few seconds. I should perhaps add that I have used a low torque supply like the Wave Mechanic and that displayed a very similar fault - it was an actual fault though.

I was advised by the owner, and I quote "it takes 50 minutes to be fully warmed up so this is then the best time to test the turntable for speed and as I have mentioned in the past our 50Hz cycle is only an average over 24 hours so if you want to nail it down you will have to do a speed check every time you have a listening session."

Suggest theres an issue somewhere, a valve amp with its warm up from cold is different, but from a "fit for purpose" point of view I'd say a turntable running at the correct speed is top priority.

I am not saying I am happy with that...I'm just telling you what was advised by the owner. I have had an Origin Live turntable before with an advanced motor that was rock solid every time.
Well the guy may have said that as it was true, but it doesnt change the fact that it should not be. A motor should spin up within a few seconds and hold speed pretty close to perfect within another couple. Mains 50hz is relatively stable and although not exact and does drift by small amounts its not enough to cause too much problems. The wave thing is supposed to solve that anyway i think.
I have a mains regenerator that keeps mine spot on 50hz and 230v. As said the cap on motor is a big possibility and may have been the fault since b4 you got it

Having sold numerous Nottingham Analogue turntables with and without the Wave Mechanic, I can state that they come up to speed and stay there regardless, within a few seconds. There is no waiting to warm up or stabilise, they just run to speed from cold, without any problem.
The OP turntable is faulty and should be repaired or replaced without argument.

If you are asking on behalf of someone else then I would suggest you clarify with them the exact nature /level of speed discrepancy they are reporting.
As I stated before, I have used power supplies that are intended to run motors in the way the Wave Mechanic does and, once the platter has been given a helping hand to achieve speed, it should lock immediately and remain so. Speed drift should be no more than 1%. If on start up you manually assist the platter to speed (33.3) and it then fails to lock and comes to a halt you have either given it too little assistance (not much should be needed, a single rotation of the platter at most) or there is an electrical fault.

If the owner of analogue works is telling you the tt takes an hour to speed stabilise then that in it self is an issue, because everyone I know that has had these decks have never ever had this issue, so either he sold you a dodgy turntable or something else is going on, you really need to insist on replacement brother of either the turntable or the wave mechanic
No turntable in the world takes even half a minute to get speed stable unless it is faulty or was a piece of junk to begin with.
Get your money back and buy something else.
You only get all this bollocks with rubber bands... I'd buy a nice, stable and reliable, 100% speed accurate direct-drive T/T, if I were you, Gavin, take that piece of pish back, and spend your time listening to music, instead of faffing around addressing problems that shouldn't exist! ;)

Bite the bullet, get in touch with manufacturer and send it for check up and repair as required.

If the deck is faulty and it seems the motor is from the description, then DD decks are just as likely to have faults, more so in fact given the complexity of their speed control circuits. This is nothing to do with the drive system, it's a faulty deck and needs the maker to repair or replace.

With all due respect Gavin, you bought this new (?) and it doesn't work. The supplier should either sort it so it works or replace, or refund. Those are the choices. You should not have to do any of what you are doing, it should simply work.

Oddly enough, this type of fault where the motor fails to lock to speed (or more accurately it is the motor electronics that fail to do so) is exactly the kind of speed fault that direct drive decks can suffer from. In fact, many of them are more likely to than a belt drive as they often use feedback loops (which is what can cause the fault) where belt drives do not.

I know (knew). The belt drive 50Hz locked AC motor solution is the simplest and most reliable solution - it doesn't necessarily make it the best though.

Gavin, I presume you have raised this problem with Divine Audio (it sounds like you have and they have suggested some things to try)? I should tell you that I am 100% certain that, unless you are somehow failing to manually turn the platter to speed at the start, there is definitely a fault. That fault could conceivably be too much friction/stiction in the main bearing* but is more likely to be electronic based, either the capacitor on the motor creating the phase shift or the power supply itself. I've worked on a lot of turntable including NA ones and other low torque designs - this is not typical behaviour.
Are Divine Audio not willing to assist further?
* Designs of this type (all the Tom Fletcher designs) rely on low torque motors and high mass platters - it is conceivable that a bearing may be too tight for the low torque motor to overcome the platters static inertia.

The owner/dealer has agreed to take the turntable back and do some testing on it to find the fault. He said it could be the motor spindle slipping within the motor. Anyway hopefully will get some clarity soon as to what/where exactly the fault is.
Yes, it is possible that is the reason. What is certain is that there is a fault and, prototype or not, it is up to the retailer to correct it.
The owner/dealer has agreed to take the turntable back and do some testing on it to find the fault.
That's good, because the Internet is watching.... ;)

Well I have an update. I sent the turntable back to Divine Audio for them to look at it. Plinth was replaced, new motor pulley and belt for no charge. The owner had it for over a week doing extensive testing. Well got it back today, set it up and started playing some LP's. Absolutely rock solid. No slowing down or anything like that, playing at 33.3 rpm first time every time.
In the end great service from Divine Audio and I am just so glad that everything is now as it should be.
