I'm looking to buy a couple of spare headshells to use on my Jelco 750D. The 2 main carts I'll be using are Denon 103 & Shure V15III so I'd like them to be permanently mounted and I'll use the other headshell when trying out other carts. Anyone care to recommend something suitable?

Well, I am somewhat biased since I sell them, but the Oyaide carbon fibre headshells really do improve the sound of a Jelco arm.

hmm, was really looking for something a bit cheaper, around the £50 mark. Anything worth buying at that price?

If you've got one of them for £50 I'll take it off your hands :). Thanks for all the suggestions.

I would think the DL103 would work nicely in this arm but isnt it too massy for the V15 III (no matter what headshell)?

It sounds pretty good to me. What problem do you think I should see if the arm mass is too great for the V15?

If you used something like a Denon PCL-5 headshell for the V15 (6.3g) or an ADC magnesium, then it won't be an issue. Yeah, a Sumiko headshell @ 12g isn't going to be ideal.

The V15 III is a 30cu or higher compliance cartridge and not as well damped as the IV and V models were. The Jelco has an option for some damping at the pivot, so a low mass shell like the Technics one (and clones) should be all you need here FOR THIS CARTRIDGE of course. Using posher headshell wires will make you feel better too and might even improve the sound a tiny bit.. It CAN work in a massy arm if the deck is stable and not disturbed by foot-falls as I remember friends with Technics SL1300 auto decks using V15 III's with no issues if the deck was on a solid surface - and the Jelco is similar mass I remember.

Good luck with both cartridges. I'm using a V15 III at present in the Dual 601 (they often came as a package from Dual) and on dull 70's rock LP's it's excellent, although my phono stage has added 220pF capacitance, which I think it needs to take some of the hard tone out.

Thats useful info.
I have a 103R and a V15 III
Have always liked the Jelco 750 and its good to know that with the correct headshell the V15 III would be happy in it.
I always thought it was designed for a less massy arm. This business of compliance and mass confounds me.

I have 2 of the ADC headshells that were the standard recommendation of every UK hifi mag in the 1980s

The ADC headshells are still good items. The early version being the best. Later items are a bit thinner and less well made.

Can anyone tell me what they weigh?
Or should i actually take off the cartridge and weigh the thing
Thanks Geoff and do get some kip :).

I believe the first ADC headshells were 7.5g. Later ones were a bit lighter.

I'd not worry too much, the Jelco arm has a highish mass and most modern cartridges will be just fine in it, with an ADC headshell or other.

Obviously a little thought has to be given to cartridge and arm matching, but it's flexible situation and best played by experimenting rather than becoming transfixed by meeting exact criteria.

if you fancy any particular combination of cartridge and arm, just give it a try. The worst that can happen (unless you're being very silly), is that you'll get mistracking or it will sound bass light or bass heavy. None of which are damaging in the short term. If it sounds right and works, so be it.

Ripply records will set an unmatched cartridge wobbling all over the place...
