View Full Version : Upgrade speaker questions?

is it a worthwhile upgrade:
Tannoy DC6T - to - Tannoy XT6F?
Also, why would something costing £2500 be superior to something costing £1500? (especially if both products are reviewed with 5 star awards)?
cheers!

Only you can answer that, more expensive dosnt always mean better, both those models can be had for under a grand brand new

I wasn't suggesting that the Tannoy's in particular cost £1500 - £2500 B.T.W.! I meant any speakers in general?
Yes the DC6T usually goes for around £250 (circa 2011), whilst the much newer (circa 2015) technology XT6F is usually around £995.
...I can't answer 'that'!! ~ that's why I'm asking perhaps anyone on here that has worked in the business (e.g. a hifi shop)....

You have to audition them yourself and also try some other brands. Just because a product gets rave reviews doesn't mean it is any good and there are many excellent speakers out there which haven't appeared in the mags.

Very nice the Usher S520. A bargain at the price. Proper Hi-Fi from a small box.

As for the Tannoys I can't help; but ignore those reviews. The only reviews you need to worry about are the ones you do yourself using your own ears in your own room.
Secondly, the cost is rarely related to whether something is superior. A large majority of the whole 'hi-fi business' is a sham and a scam and has been for about 30 years now :D
EG. The modestly priced £3.5k speakers in my sig are superior IMHO to certain better known so called 'hi-fi' speakers costing £27k.....

That kind of money would buy a pair of vintage 'proper' Tannoys in good condition. Which would probably last a lot longer and sound better. They would also be an appreciating asset, whereas the modern ones will drop in value dramatically.

It seems to be common on the internet as a whole, that review sites suck! Everywhere you find people rubbishing them for one reason or another (not just here). They say: "we do the listening so you don't have too by giving an unbiased and impartial perspective on the products". I dare not say I find them useful any more because I would get 'flamed' for sure for having that personal opinion (which I am entitled to!). Of course, I may not really mean that, I could just be saying it to see what response there is (lol).

I doubt if any shops would demo the gear in your own room without full payment first?

"sham & scam"? ...more examples please! A little less vague? I like this B.T.W. "£3.5k better than £27,000" ~ great!

I'm sorry but, I find that hard to swallow! "vintage" ...that could mean something from circa 1970's being better than a bang up to date model? You've not given any examples that can be followed up on though; you need something in support of your argument please? Appreciating asset? So are we talking working speakers or antiques to be looked at and admired? (bit like vintage cars in glass cages - lol)...
Richer Sounds will let you take stuff home for a week or two providing you deposit the asking price.
Good speakers require proper engineering and proper engineering is expensive. Add on manufacturer's profit margin and distributor and dealer margins and it is hardly surprising that the really good speakers cost a bloody fortune.
That's why a lot of us here have gone for vintage/used speakers as a way of getting something really good at a price we can afford.
Go to a hi-fi show and you will get to listen to many very unremarkable speakers that cost £5,000 and up. You'll hear a few really good ones too, but they will also be £5,000 and up.
There are exception to that, but they are few and far between.

I don't know the answer to the Tannoy question but the five star rating is not an absolute rating, it is within the context of other, like priced, designs

Richer sounds! ~ that sounds good info to know ~ thanks! This seems like a secret society of those "in the know". E.G. usher? ...never heard of it!! Guess I'll never know what to really look out for? £5000, I guess I'll always be stuck with junk then, no way £5000! That's just beyond me! Ummm... hi-fi show! ..do they still have them these days? Of course shops have a vested interest and possibly an ulterior motive for suggesting things (e.g. business back hand deals etc.)... great to know I'll always be stuck with junk, thanks guys! Made my day (not!). See if I was an expert, I would be saying to people: "there is a great deal on ebay, the price is amazing for what you get but obviously I can't guarantee that you personally will like the sound, even though I do know that it is one of the most superior sounding speakers available from my own experience".... that sort of thing.
http://www.whathifi.com/usher/s-520/review certainly not £5000!

OK ~ so I know I've been well drilled about listening and hearing stuff for myself and going to shops & shows etc. "BUT!" ~
I know I may not like the sound personally without hearing it, I just wondered if anyone has or has heard the Klipsch r-28f ? ...does anyone on here like the build quality, value for money, price points, their own take on the sound quality, or does anyone think they are rubbish for the money? ;)

Have you not looked the regular chat on here and elsewhere about vintage Tannoys. They are held in very high regard by many. I'd suggest that the majority of the circa seventies Tannoys will run circles around the modern 'tulip waveguide' Tannoys. The old Monitor Red, Monitor Gold, HPD and later ceramic magnet types can sound stunningly good. I'm talking about speakers from the sixties to the early eighties. They are each perfectly usable in a modern system, as many members here including myself appreciate.

No, not looked at regular chat? No Sorry? Haven't? ...monitor, red, gold, HPD? Mainly listened to near field monitors in studios in the 70's and probably damaged my hearing too - LOL! (e.g. Fostex/Tascam).

If there's a member near you who uses proper 'classic' Tannoys. Try and get a listen to them. The sound quality will probably astonish you. Obviously, the rest of the system has to be of suitable quality.

These are not where I'd be looking. I've not heard this model, but the cheaper Klipsch speakers I have heard have a character I don't like. 'bright & breezy' some may say, a bit crude I'd say. The big 'proper' Klipsch models are a different thing altogether (so are the prices).
If you want sensitive, vibrant sounding speakers done well, at that sort of money. Try looking at the Triangle range from France. Well made and designed.
