It just occurred to me that the US electoral process looks like some surrealist circus with all candidates promising and guaranteeing all sorts of things .. so, it shouldn't come as a surprise if, eventually, a Clown is elected.

The ancient Greeks used to complain about the world going to hell in a handcart. Not much changes. Our grandparents generation had to deal with the Great Depression, two world wars, compulsory military service, the Blitz, Hitler, the Japs, rationing, etc etc
Compared to them we are very safe and have it very easy.
U.S political candidates are always people you would cross the street to avoid. Much like our political candidates in the UK, really.

In my case my parents, but yes in many ways we have had a safer life. Doesnt help the current situation though and our safety could be brought to an abrupt end if things get out of control. We could have several prize plums hovering on the brink shortly. Sure the us military are sharpening their missiles at this moment
The danger of a serious, world-ending confrontation was much greater in the 1950s and '60s with Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Soviet Bloc. There is nothing that dangerous happening now.

I remember my parents being very worried re Cuban missile crisis. I was young but you go the message all was not good. Air raid sirens being tested etc.... Think dad was on the bunker list at that time.. Dunno about the rest of us though :). Dont agree things are as safe as houses though. The tensions are still there and it wnt take much to escalate when youve got 2 hawks on either side of us.

I agree with that entirely. It's not nuclear war that is a direct threat but a couple of other time bombs which are ticking. Someone like the self centred, self serving Clown would only make them tick faster for mankind as a whole. Although, I don't think he will be elected in november.

Can you still buy them. I lent all mine out and never got them back. Except for 'Grass Roots' which is coincidentally a satire on U.S elections, amongst other things.

Was just listening to a prog on radio re the 2 main candidates.. She who must be obeyed and he who thinks hes a financial God.. The American commentator reckoned it was going to get very ugly..... Does that mean Hillary is gonna win?

I had a great collection of freak brothers and loads of fantagraphics stuff too. Absolutely loved Daniel Clowes and Eightball too.
My cousin got these as he was an aspiring graphic artist at the time. He now works in advertising :rolleyes: so I guess they were completely wasted on him.
Used to have all the Freak Brothers and FFC oeuvre...particularly liked the Carlos Castenada referencing episode.
Robert Crumb good too...his band was ok as well - The Cheap Suit Serenaders.

That's why I'd love Scotland and Wales to go independent and divorce themselves from the UK (and association with Westmonster), so they'd in turn divorce themselves from warmongering Cameron and his cronies, who seem intent on joining forces at every stage with the warmongering Americans.

back on topic I think it is good and healthy that there are extreme candidates. It means all views get an airing and it provides a good barometer to the more moderate candidates who likely to actually get into power
If it wasn't for UKIP we would not be getting a referendum on the EU, for example.

On the subject of politics I once again could not disagree with you more strongly... Having extremist views aired tends to normalise them and this takes free speech too far IMHO. It's not considered ok to go falsely shout fire in a packed theatre.... and I am very glad we have anti hate speech laws in this country.

Shouting fire in a theatre or advocating violence against ethnic minorities is not the same as free speech. They are two very different things and it is disingenuous to compare them.
The idea of a democracy is that everyone gets to have a say, for better or for worse. Yes, a lot of people will vote with their 'emotions', just as they make every decision with their 'emotions'. That is the inevitability of democracy.
I wouldn't describe myself as 'pond life', in fact I would say I was sufficiently knowledgeable about economics and politics to make an informed decision re the EU issue.I did come close to supporting and voting UKIP in the last election. There are just too many idiots in that party (as with all the parties) so in the end I didn't.
In any case I would suggest that if the referendum is considered 'too complex' for us ordinary folk to decide on that should also apply to General Elections as well. If we are to abandon 1 man 1 vote entirely what do you propose we replace it with?

In the USA due to the 1st amendment the KKK are not a banned organisation and can publicly campaign and march. This is "free speech" gone too far. I rest my case on that one....
In Germany just a week ago their kind of equivalent of UKIP set fire to a refugee centre and then stopped fire engines gaining access.... UKIP are basically an "EDL/BNP lite" as far as I'm concerned.
A general election is fought on the basis of manifesto's and far less complicated than the Euro referendum. NOT being in the EU lasts for rather longer than 5 years as well! I do strongly believe that there should be no referendum on this issue. The "general public" taken en masse is something I hold in low regard... generally rather knuckle dragging and reactionary IMHO, (according to "the general public" The Sun and Daily Heil are the top newspapers, Justin Bieber is the worlds best musician and The X factor etc the best TV FFS!) which is why they are not offered a referendum on the death penalty, and quite rightly!! As famously said by Churchill "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter" and yes he also said "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

The problem with censorship is what is censured? The usual answer is 'everything I don't agree with'.
Clearly that doesn't work.
In America you at least have a level playing field, even if that does mean allowing extremist views to be expressed without censure.
As to extremists in Europe setting fire to refugee centres: That is an issue of criminality, not politics. The typical UKIP supporter would not be sympathetic to such actions.
One aspect of the piss-poor economic management of the EU is that some people are going to blame immigrants for their worsening financial condition. Some are going to get 'emotional' about it and consider that that justifies them taking 'direct action'.
I don't consider that incident any different to the striking miners who chucked a concrete block off a motorway bridge and killed a man. Men should not let their hearts rule their heads. Sadly this is a lesson that seems no longer to be taught.
