Quad 606 MkII

Anyone got one/heard one/want one?

I'm taking one in as P/X for the Melody amp to use as a stop-gap while I sort out my new valve thingy. Then it'll be moved on. It looks like a good canditate for use with a quick n' easy 'pot-in-a-box' type passive pre... Is that going to work?

I personally think it's a great amp if used with speakers of 6 Ohm upwards. It doesn't care too much for low impedance speakers although it's far better in this respect than the 405 ever was/is.....

All you'll need to do is switch it on and give it half an hour or so for the case to get gently warm. Once this has happened, you may just find it a pleasant surprise - at least I hope you do :)

There was a receipt in the box for a service by Quad, but I didn't take notice of when it was done. :( I've had a 'visual' of it and it looks to be in fine nick, there's a bit if discoloration to one corner where it looks like someone's had a (poor) go at cleaning it, apart from that it looks good!

Rumor has it, that the Mk II is pretty close to the 909? :confused:... Quad returned it after servicing in a 909 box too.

Anyway... it should do nicely as a stand in, I hope! :)

I didn't like the mk1 606 when first switched on - a bit grainy and "dead," but given an hour or two, it opened up well in my opinion. The mk2 cold, sounded like a warmed up mk1 and opened a little further. I never directly compared the 707/909, but I sold a 707 to a client with Spendor BC3's and it sounded very atmospheric straight out of the box, although I personally disliked the Speakon connectors it used.

I'm sure you know this, but Dada electronics do a "soup-up" on the 606 for not a huge amount. I think most of it is for the wiring loom (?)

Last serviced in Oct 2002, so should have a bit of life left in it! :)
However, due to ever changing plans, it may well be on ebay rather sooner than anticipated! :smoking:
