View Full Version : You've got to be kidding me.....
I've just connected a Chromecast Audio I bought for £15 to my NVA monoblocks using a belkin 3.5mm to rca cable. I'm controlling the volume via my phone.
You wouldn't believe the sound I'm getting playing stuff from my Google library of uploaded tracks and Spotify connect.
After all the fuss people made about Raspberry Pi and the fact people will happily spend £000s more on bloody cables, I'm frankly amazed that so few here have even tried a Chromecast Audio. Simple set up, easy control, great sound.
At this point my FLAC library looks redundant.
320kb can sound good.. although coogle may be less now. Ive got stuff on google from a while ago, but I use amazons music player now. all my bought stuff is on there automatically anyways so saves a lot of hassle... I also have the prime so can get plenty free stuff if I want it to stream. run it into my ipad connected to the belkin hometheatre case which is bloody awesome for its size.
Not a patch on my Pi and yes I did spend 000 on cables, handy little gadget though and for £14 it's a steal, just need Apple to support it, but I'm not holding my breath for that one.
I bought 2 to fit onto the grandkids TVs so they can listen to music in their rooms :)

Mine arrived yesterday. I was getting fed up with my Sonos' frequent inability to connect to Spotify. So far, the Chromecast Audio has behaved faultlessly and SQ, into a Caiman II, equals, if not betters, the Sonos. Definitely the best £15 I've ever spent on hifi :)

I haven't tried it out with mine yet, but has anyone compared the sound quality when powering the Chromecast Audio via various supplies, eg mains v battery v linear power?
Given the difference it seems to make elsewhere, it would figure that it should impact the CA also

I have an Ifi Audio I power arriving tomorrow, so will report back.

Interesting, I have one of those battery power bank things. I might try it on that.

Interestingly, Hans Beekhuyzen gave the Chromecast Audio something of a thumbs down. I'm wondering if that was power-supply related, since it seems to be getting good feedback here.

Mike,
I'm surprised you say it's 'not a patch on the Pi', I'd say it's at least on a par. I've just fitted a Fisual Hollywood optical cable (£9.99) and I'm hearing things I've not heard through the Pi. Will be interested to see whether it goes up another notch when the Ifi ipower arrives tomorrow.
Either way, both are a great alternative to the other streamers out there!
Have to say was never overly impressed by the Pi...wasn't bad but no great shakes imo.
The one I have has an overspecced linear PSU and built in passive pre..so a pretty good example.
Still, fantastic for what it is and unbeatable for the money.
Not heard the Chromecast, sure its great too.
I think the Pi can be a bit system dependant tbh, to fulfil its potential. I have heard mine in different systems and its sounded different each time. There are also a lot of programs and differing settings that can make or break it
You need a £200 psu on the £14 device ;):D:D
Na, I got a Chinese one... works just as well as the £200 one imho ....and it hasn't exploded yet either ;)

There must have been something wrong with your source in the fist place if the CA streamer sounds that good especially while controlling the volume from a phone :eyebrows: anyways, Hans says its not worth it.

Are you on a wind up? Something wrong in the system? Get a grip on yourself man. We're talking about a 15 quid dongle thing here.... The point is it sounds excellent through a pair of very honest amps and my speakers.
Now go take your backhanded banter and chase yerself.

Who is this guy on the YouTube video anyway? Should I have heard of him?
Anyway, these were just initial comments of it using a cheap cable in a 2 minute lash up.
I'm away for a few days with work but for my next trick I'll connect it to a Benchmark DAC, which takes no prisoners with a sloppy source, and we'll see what's what. I just need to find my mini toslink adapter.

Could do Brian. How well it would work of course would depend upon there being decent WiFi at the venue.

Looked into the Chromecast when it came out. Seems to be a fairly one-trick-pony kind of device with very limited connectivity. Can understand why those who had difficulty setting up the Pi might be attracted to such a simple plug-and-play gizmo for £5 less but other than them both playing music, I can't really see how any meaningful comparison could be warranted. They are simply too different.
Also noted that on the face of it, the Chromecast appears to be simply a means for Google to tie new customers to their subscription cloud services (following Apple's lead) - no thanks

I'll agree in so far as one is a total PITA to use and the other is a breeze. They both play music, is that the one trick you're referring too? The CA plays it from all manner of apps. It is as open, if not more so than any Pi. How is it limited in connectivity, it has analogue and digital outs. You still need to control the volume via an app with a Pi dont you? Unless you just turn it full up and use your system volume control which is what I'm guessing most Pi owners do anyway?
I think the issue here is that people have invested heavily in their streaming set ups and are probably just a bit miffed when something good and disruptive comes along at a fraction of the price. We saw the same reactions when people here started taking the Pi seriously.
Not tried one so cannot compare them myself. There is a learning curve with the pi if your not overly computery, although the new programs from moode have simplified it somewhat, and pretty sure they will get better. Sound is to me having streamed from my pc via async outputs etc to be farcsuperior ..... If i lay hands on one i will try a dircet comparison. I do have music ripped up to google music

Indeed - but that's all...
Ethernet socket: NO
USB socket(s) other than the power supply: NO
So I can't wire it to my router directly and I can't plug in my SSD catalogue - just pump stuff to it via WiFi. As I can already do this with my Pi (in spades) should I so wish plus the rest I mentioned, the Chromecast is a non-starter for me.
Can fully understand why other might find it useful though, particularly If you are a bit of a computer numpty (not that I'm an expert

Another loss leader, like Amazon's Fire Tablet, hook 'em all in to subscription services...then when they're addicted, reliant, or both, raise the content price ;)
I bought my folks a Chromecast Audio for Christmas and they love it to bits. I of course had to try it in my main system before I gave it to them and I love how easy it is to set up and use (and the folks get on with it better than any piece of technology I've ever bought for them before). I have to say I was pretty underwhelmed with how it sounded though. I didn't try anything different to the stock supplied power supply but to my ears it was flat and lifeless with a noise floor that prevented any real insight into recordings. It didn't even begin to approach the sort of quality I get out of my Pi/IQAudio DAC combination and that was before I'd started playing around with power supplies for the Pi.
High levels of jitter from it's digi out according to the archimago blog.
TosLink is prone to jitter and unfortunately, the Chromecast demonstrated more jitter with the 24-bit J-Test compared to most other devices I have tested. The severity of the jitter as expected worsened at the 96kHz sample rate with the novel 24/96 version of the J-Test. Remember though that the final jitter effect in the analogue output is an interplay between the sending source and the DAC. I was able to demonstrate that the Chromecast Audio was more jittery as a source than my PC with the Gigabyte motherboard's TosLink to my TEAC UD-501 DAC, but this might not be the same with every DAC.

Ah yes, that old chestnut.
When commonsense fails there's always measurements.
Well done you, have a biscuit.

Thank heavens we've got different tastes. Sounds far from dull and lifeless to me. (for a £15 bit of kit with no fancy power supply anyway).

Yes indeedy - I try and avoid them as much as I can. Only subscription we have (apart from the ISP, which is bad enough) is Netflix and I am not really sure we extract full value from that @ £6 pm :(
To me it's the same difference as renting a house or buying one .. with the latter at least you have a house at the end of it.
Rich,
In over 20odd years being on hifi forums the thing I've learned is the realisation that everyone need to reinvent their own wheel (i.e. theres nothing to to be gained/who cares what someone else thinks...) so here's my thing for what its worth?
Haters gonna hate, those that have a grind will always have a grind..end of the day who actually cares?
They havent heard what you have heard and you (we?) havent heard what they have heard...
Doesnt (neccessarily?) make one to not want buy someone a beer?
Its only hifi. :)

Yeah, for some reason (as mentioned on another thread), the latest version of Moode really makes the Pi 'sing', in a way that Volumio didn't to the same degree... Don't ask me why, but in my system the difference *is* audible.
It's really strange for me how folk such as Gary and Rich (with discerning ears, good systems and easily the computer knowledge to get the most from the Pi), don't seem to rate it, as in my system it really does sound superb - and I think folks here know the standards I seek, and that I wouldn't entertain using the Pi, if it was pish, and most importantly able to compete with my other sources, namely a £3k CDP/DAC and £5k turntable! ;)
Rich, you've heard my Techy at NEBO, which I believe you were very impressed with. What if I told you that the Pi, playing a file of the same vinyl album, here sounds 85% as good as my T/T?
In that respect, I've simply no idea why you guys aren't getting the same results with the Pi in your systems..... Did you both use it in conjunction with the IQ Audio DAC? For me, that's crucial, as both products work symbiotically together.
Here, with my Paul Hynes linear PSU, the sound it produces is as good as I've heard from so-called 'high-end' music streamers (the likes of a Linn Accurate DS) costing £3k+. As such, for me, the RPi/IQ Audio DAC is a remarkable combination, and deserves to be taken as seriously as any other top-notch music source.
Marco.
I haven't given up on the Pi yet, apparently Roon sees the Pi dac combo as an endpoint so I have ordered the IQ dac, if it shows promise then I will look at getting one of the linear psu's from ebay to try.

I've heard the Pi in Garys system and it definitely wasn't as good as what he already had . The problem here was that it was being compared to a very good music server/streamer . However , like all pieces of hifi equipment , I believe that it can be made to sound much better by optimizing things like PSUs and cabling.
The Google Chromecast is what it is . I haven't heard it but for £15 what's not to like . It's certainly a very cheap ( and easy it seems ) entry into the world of streaming . AOS for me is about discovering new items of hifi which can be shared and discussed politely and sensibly with its members . The problem is that when you find something which works you have to spend the rest of your time trying to justify/defend your position from all sides , particularly from people who haven't even tried or heard the piece of equipment you're talking about
I think twice now about posting about new things which I've tried because I simply can't be bothered defending my choice of equipment which works ( IMO , which is all that counts at the end of the day )

Pretty much my position these days too. Way too many folks taking the piss, and evangelically bashing folks thoughts, feelings and observations. Usually the same old, same old, cables of all types, tweaks and those who prefer to rely on their ears than measurements. Not sure what the answer is, getting folks to respect varying positions without attacking or making the person who heard the thing, who is making the observation feel bad for writing about it is an uphill struggle. Of course there are those who say, its just the net, get a thicker skin, etc are missing the point I feel and being insensitive to the realities of how what is said here can effect people.
I was bullied on Zerogain, for being a subjectavist, usual topics, it got bad, made me feel ill, stressed etc so I shut my presence down and left. AoS was a breath of fresh air, but I have to say in recent times there is a less than ideal vibe creeping in during discussions - usually ones - where views are not being expressed in a good way, views are coming across in a bullying and belittling way. That's my perception. Now AoS is nowhere near that Zerogain level, but there are folks who need to temper their evangelical passions and frustration and treat folks they disagree with, with respect and humanity, not as dead icons on a screen to be dismissed and verbally pissed on.
Taking part in online forums shouldn't leave folks feeling bad or stressed, and if it does then there is something wrong. The big issue is folks sitting behind a screen often forget they are talking to real breathing humans.

Very true, but online has in my view damaged human interaction, as its often removed the humanity bit. Its very easy to reduce an interaction to icons on a screen directed at a concept not a person, and that is where it goes wrong - addressing the subject and forgetting the fact there is a person there also.

Got my chrome cast today. Analogue out to my pre and it's very close to an SBT running the EDO mod into a teac t1 DAC. And Spotify is much nicer native than the Logitech app now.
Toslink cable ordered but it's a great bit of kit.
Turn on full dynamic range in the device settings on the chrome cast app to get a noticeable improvement and volume hike

All very possible but I really fail to see what this has to do with this thread - or the 'haters got to hate' comment earlier either.
Perhaps I'm being a bit thick or just not very perceptive but there has been little or no 'hate' in the responses that I have noticed and certainly nothing I would see as bullying, simply different opinions on a piece of kit that were pretty much invited by the first post. Some have responded that they have tried and and liked/disliked the Chromecast - others (such as me) haven't tried it and are either curious or not interested and have given reasons. For the most part I would say the responses have actually been pretty moderate and polite (although one or two leaned more towards banter and ribbing)
Sorry - but this seems to be a bit of a mountain/molehill IMV... :)
Hi Brian,
I've heard the Pi in Garys system and it definitely wasn't as good as what he already had . The problem here was that it was being compared to a very good music server/streamer .
Now *that* I can get. In the context of such a bespoke, highly optimised (non-commercial) device, I wouldn't expect the Pi to be better, because Gary will have spent the money in the right areas of his server, in order for it to deliver the highest SPPV. He knows exactly what he's doing in that respect.
What I don't get (although I don't doubt for one second that folks aren't hearing what they're hearing) is how this highly mass-produced £15 Chromecast can be perceived as being better than the Pi/IQ Audio DAC combo, although I haven't heard one, so can't really comment. However, when you're sitting listening to some amazing sounding music, reproduced through the RPi, and from experience you *know* the sound quality is of very high standard, you just can't understand why other folks, who are using the same device, don't seem to be getting the same results....
Yes, of course, systems and cables, etc, are different, but if folks are enjoying other music sources/streamers (such as the Chromecast) much more the Pi, through the same systems, then it's not the different systems and cables that are causing dissatisfaction with the Pi; it's the Pi itself - so what's the issue? :hmm:
Certainly, IMO, the RPi doesn't get 'properly serious' until you hook it up with a top-notch linear PSU, so that is when it should be truly judged as a genuine high-end music source, but even with its stock Wallwart, I was very impressed, and as you know, I'm not the easily impressed sort.
Anyway, until (if) I ever listen to an RPi in someone's system who doesn't rate it, and I can hear exactly why that's the case (or the user present explains what it is they don't like about it), the lack of love for the Pi, sonically, in some quarters, shall for me remain a mystery....
AOS for me is about discovering new items of hifi which can be shared and discussed politely and sensibly with its members . The problem is that when you find something which works you have to spend the rest of your time trying to justify/defend your position from all sides , particularly from people who haven't even tried or heard the piece of equipment you're talking about
The bit in bold is undeniably the case, and will strictly remain so for as long as I own the site. However, you must realise that any large and active forum, such as AoS, is bound to be populated by an array of diverse characters, all with different opinions and experiences, some contrary to yours, so you have to expect that some people are not going to take what you say at face value, and therefore will disagree with your experiences and defend theirs equally as robustly! ;)
As the forum continues to grow, it's simply impossible to have it filled with folks who all think the same way as you or I. Indeed, it's remarkable, given the size of the forum now and how we have members here from all over the world, from different cultures and backgrounds/of different belief systems, that there aren't more little 'flare ups' like this, and that's testament to how we run the forum, and how important that bit above is, and also how much we seek to maintain it, which is highlighted in bold! :exactly:
However, if anyone here *ever* feels that they're being bullied, insulted or treated in any way with contempt, then report it to either to myself or one of the mods. There's also a little warning triangle (with an exclamation mark in the middle), under every post, which is the 'Report Post' button, and members should use it if they feel that they're being treated by anyone in the way I've described - and I promise you it will be dealt with.
That said, large and diverse forums, such as AoS, are not for delicate little wallflowers. That applies especially when someone is legitimately contradicting your opinions, and you're not being 'comforted' by others agreeing with what you hear!
I think twice now about posting about new things which I've tried because I simply can't be bothered defending my choice of equipment which works ( IMO , which is all that counts at the end of the day )
Indeed, but please, NEVER gag yourself like that. Instead address the issue *at source*, by doing what I've said above, and we will clamp down on anyone who's behaving contrary to the AoS ethos. However, at the same time, we're all big boys here, and so you simply can't always have your opinions and experiences, as valid as they are, 'cosied up to', or be as appreciated by others, as you appreciate them.
Not that I'm saying that's what you expect, but there's a toughness of mentality (and the ability not to be easily upset/offended) also required by folks, when participating on forums such as this, where robust debate and different opinions are allowed, lest AoS becomes simply a bland haven for a bunch of obsequious 'yes men', jerking each other off, and although some with certain kinks here might like that, that's not going to happen! ;)

All points taken , considered , and for the most part agreed with Marco . I know that there are many people on here who work in , and are experts in certain fields and who have very valid opinions . Since I've joined AOS I've learned and improved my system well beyond my expectations following advice from such people . My problem is when people , who haven't even tried the piece of equipment or modification which I share on the forum , post negative opinions . I don't have a problem discussing something where the person posts that they've tried the equipment or modification and they didn't like it or it didn't work in their system . Now I know that not everyone can sample every piece of equipment or every modification , but it does grate a bit when someone tells me that something can't possibly work without even trying it themselves .
Just to put the record straight here , I only started posting on forums around five years ago , and did feel a little bullied on the first one I joined . However , I have never felt bullied or intimidated on AOS . I have always found AOS a great forum to be a member of , and most of its members friendly and very helpful . Indeed , I have made quite a few good friends on here ( including your good self ) and I'll be attending NEBO again this year with a few of them . I'll also be reacquainting myself with some of my newly found Geordie friends in May .
All in all my experience on AOS has been a very positive one . I sign into the forum most days and enjoy reading a lot of the threads . I just can't be bothered with what you describe as '' robust debate '' , although sometimes it does bring a smile to my face . It's only hifi at the end of the day :)

Oh I *completely* agree, Brian, but the key is not to let it bother you, and either just treat that person's non-opinion (not the person, however) with due contempt, and thus silently dismiss their 'views' on the matter, or argue back. Don't just sit there and be pissed off, or worse, give up posting. That's just daft, as ultimately if you enjoy being here, you're only penalising yourself...
If the person who's baselessly disagreeing with you continues in a nasty manner, then (unless we see it first) report it to the mods, where it will be dealt with accordingly. That's what I mean about having the robustness or toughness of mentality to cope, as on forums such as this, with a diverse membership, you're not going to get a 'warm glow' from always having things your own way, or your 'world view' confirmed! ;)

You are not alone in that experience. So don't let it spoil your day. I have had to live with such views for years from people who think they know better than me. An example is when I started to develop sound and performance enhancement upgrades via codes in a firmware chip, whilst the general recognized method is via replacement or substitution of components such as caps and resistors. I could hear the laughter of the disbelievers in my sleep, but nobody is laughing now. I am more likely to get inquiries about if someone has the latest updated firmware, instead of whether it really works.

Hi Brian,
Now *that* I can get.

I've used a Pi and the CCA into a Rega DAC-R and think they sound pretty much the same. Maybe hearing the odd thing with the CCA that I hadn't noticed with the Pi.
I believe what I'm hearing is the DAC and the Pi/CCA is just streaming to it with no influence over the sound (possibly a very small amount).
For me, I kept the CCA as it is able to play my choice of streaming service through it's own app (Spotify) and play my stored CD rips using Plex. This for me is more convenient and easier than the Pi.

Absolutely, Bill. Convenience however, or perhaps preferring a different operating system than that used by the RPi, is a different matter from not liking how it sounds, or not considering that it sounds anything special. I'm talking purely sonics.
IMO, however, to get the most from the Pi (aside from achieving the right settings in Alsamixer and choosing Moode), use of the 'in-built' IQ-Audio DAC is ubiquitous. Using it with external DACs, no matter considered how 'good', where some form of linking cable is required, dilutes the Pi's magic.
K.I.S.S rules! ;)
Marco.
For Spotify the CCA is perfect, can I ask what files you use in plex and I'm all Flac and would like to try the CCA with flac. I tried a iOS app on my iPad that can 'cast' but it can't do 100% lossless.
Actually I think I've just realised you mentioned re-encoding to level 5 flac is that right?

Same here. There's some areas where I know quite a lot, and so am more likely to be right than wrong, but even where I consider myself an 'expert', there's bound to be someone who knows even more than I do, and there's always more to learn. As far as subjective opinions are concerned, there's no right and wrong anyway, so I'm happy to accept that others may not like what I like.
The problem IMO is when someone goes beyond subjective opinion ('I like this') into the realms of judging what others should think ('I like this and anyone who disagrees is deaf/an idiot').

5 is generally the default for FLAC, not that it should make any difference, the intensive bit is the encoding, unpacking it uses far less computer power. More about how much hard drive space you want to save, which is becoming less and less f an issue these days with the ever lowering price of storage.

Lol - indeed... It's not about being right, though. It's about not letting anyone here, due to their dogmatic belligerence, spoil your enjoyment of AoS, or worse, your system. Also, I have to be honest and say that it pisses me off when folk aren't suitably 'robust', in terms of character, or confident enough in what they believe is true, to think that way, and thus allow the opposite to happen.
Posting on an Internet forum, with nearly 12,000 members, is like walking into a public room with as many people in it, then starting a debate (on any given subject), and expecting both everyone to agree with you, and to 'respect' your opinion (and you). It simply isn't going to happen, as human nature dictates otherwise...
However, because this is an independently run section of the Internet instead, there are rules and standards of behaviour to maintain. Therefore, whilst we can't make anyone agree with you, we can insist that they treat you with appropriate respect - *but* you have to allow the mods and I to do our job, instead of taking a strop and running away like a girl when the going gets tough! ;)
The only 'winner' then is the self-absorbed pain in the arse who couldn't see past his own blinkered opinion.

The last sentence in the penultimate paragraph made me smile :) I think you're mistaking removing oneself from the presence of someone who's giving off negative vibes ( which I always do in real life too ) and running away in a''girlie strop '' , which I'm more than capable of too BTW , when the circumstances are right . Just ask the wife

Well said mate. I consider it one of the best outcomes of my presence on this forum - the fact that I got to know the members of the Scottish Mafia. All of us have enriched each other both personally, and by how much we have learned from each other as far as our systems are concerned.
I can say the same of the Owston group. For me, it's the social aspect of meeting like minded peeps that is the most important thing.

Lol... First of all, my comments weren't aimed at you specifically, or indeed anyone here. I was simply making a general point, which was that it's daft leaving a forum, which you enjoy participating on, simply because someone's pissed you off, as in reality you're only cutting your nose off to spite your face. *That*, I've never understood, and for me defo smacks of a 'girly flounce'.
Different thing entirely though, as you say, walking away from someone giving off negative vibes (that's a good way of handling things), as long as you walk back again afterwards! ;)

Like I've said, that's cool. I think you've taken the wrong meaning, though, of "robust".
I simply meant it in the context of standing your ground, giving as good as you get, and not becoming upset by someone else's inconsiderate behaviour, or allowing them to get you down. You just have to accept that, on forums such as this, populated by a multitude of different characters, that the odd spat is inevitable, and to rise above it, which is precisely what you're doing.
Above all, never be afraid to express your opinion, for fear of it being 'shot down in flames'. It's your opinion, reflecting your experiences, which is as valid as anyone else's, and you're entitled to it! And remember this saying next time someone pisses you off:
'Stropeth ye not when a filthy scoundrel or vagabond verily disseth thy word, but instead poketh him in the eye with the sharp tool of silence, or boot him in the boz if he gets too cheeky!' :eyebrows:

OK well I came late to this thread but I have to say that I just hooked up the CCA to my set up and I reckon the value for money is unbeatable. I've not given it enough time to truly evaluate the sound quality vs the Pi but it works seemlessly with Spotify so far. Personally Spotify serves two purposes for me. First to listen to new things and if I like it enough I'll go and buy it. Secondly for when friends are around and were not in the mood or a little too inebriated to put records on. So on that basis CCA is an absolute bargain. I guess it's not for everyone but then neither are CD's, Records, R2R, Pi, FLAC etc etc
Cheers

I just did a Lossless on Pi vs 320 kbit/s on Spotify comparison Grant. On this occasion the Pi won by a country mile!
This'll be fun for while.
I dont have any paid for streaming services Loz. Cant afford them tbh but i get tunein and what music i have on google music free version. Dont know what rates they stream at but my flac on rpi is different league. Thats not to say the cc2 isnt good as it is. It just doesnt have what i call depth to the music( might be wrong analogy ). Anyhoo i do like what it does in its own way.

Didnt know you could use a dac. Its a mini rca type analogue output unless it is one of those that double as a optical? Ive got a cable somewhere.

Yeah it doubles as an optical with a mini toslink adapter on the end of your favourite optical cable. On mine I only use the mini rca with headphones when I'm in bed.

Spotify state that 'Normal' streaming is 96kbit/s, 'High' is 160kbit/s and 'Extreme' is 320kbit/s. I guess the quality is also dependent on the downstream signal etc. But yes I would agree at this point it does lack the depth of the Pi. I'll keep an open mind and ear though.

Oh yes. Aside from the experiment which gave rise to my initial thread where I fed up direct to power amps I use my cca with an external DAC. Only then does a comparison with a Pi become meaningful, using the same sources of course ;)
