Is that a recipe from the latest slimmers world Shane?
I bet a balti pie bap would be mega too.
a butcher just a couple of miles from me has won the scotch pie world championships on a few occasions.... superb pies they are, and the roll catches any gravy

Sorry to be ignorant but what exactly is a sausage roll in a roll ?
Lol... Take a bread roll and shove a sausage roll inside it! :eyebrows:
I believe that it's regarded as somewhat of a British delicacy, although perhaps more of a northern one, on a par with the 'chip butty'. Never been a fan of such stodgy foods, but hey, whatever you're into.
Marco.

From our days spent in Yorkshire as poor students we'd share a portion of fish, chips and curry sauce between several bread rolls to feed the multitude. The Yorkshire Indian butty we called it. I could live a day on one of those and 5 cigarettes.
gonna be having a megga fry up soon... was in the butchers today and got Stornaway black n white, bacon, beef and onion sliced and eggs for French toast.....no tatty scones as I'm on a diet ;)

Bit like a crisp & ketchup butty in a sarnie! :D
Lol... I have to giggle, but also have to be honest and say I've never experienced anything like that, nor have I ever smoked (tobacco), although I have been known to enjoy some occasional 'herbs' :peace:
When my old man owned a couple of chip shops in Glasgow we used to get folk in who ordered some weird and wonderful things, but the Brit's obsession with 'baps' or 'butties', chips and pies has always intrigued me. Italians get their starch from pasta and rice, and the odd pizza, all things which are rather more to my tastes than what you describe, or the subject of this thread.
Hey, I guess if it wasn't for you lot, and yer fish and chip butties, we wouldn't be where we are today! :eyebrows: ;)

Just had an extra large donner, it was horrible, so glad when it was finished
What you need now, Roy, is a right good fart, and then take what comes afterwards! :D

Love the old mystery meat and I had some of the salad so quite healthy really

Aye, we also sold plenty of those to the resident daftees, and nice and 'squelchy' they were, too... Never any deep-fried Mars Bars, though!
Marco.

That's just sacrilege! :nono:
As is anything 'deep pan', or with pineapples anywhere near it.... {Boak}.

We were pretty poor living on 2 student loans in rented digs but it made us who we are and taught us not to take things for granted. The fish n chip butties were a treat, as were the herbs, ciggies and the odd tins of lager. We learned to share stuff, that a couple of cans of booze shared with mates were better than drinking them all yourself. A mixtape from a pal was a gift to be treasured and of course repaid.
I know it sounds unhealthy but most of the time our meals were actually pretty good, the local green grocer became my mate and I'd get the stock he hadn't shifted to local pubs at knock down prices. There were lots of soups and stews I recall. The corner shop gave us a line of credit when we were in a push and it was always promptly repaid. A nice Sikh family they were.
I see those days with rose tinted spectacles now and gloss over much of the bleakness of it but I recognise they were character forming in a good way. I'm still quite partial to the odd fish n chip butty to line the stomach after a night out. Wouldn't thank you for a donner kebab.

The chip shops used to do deep fried battered spam fritters. I used to love those, as long as it was well done. Haven't seen them for donkeys years.
deep fry the bag sir? actually I take less fat in a week than most folk. have a fry up every few months for old times,as I love one occasionally, but almost everything I eat is no fat, as my internals dont like it now lol. take very little sugar either, and in fact have not bought any or have any since the wife died(she loved it)
Sounds like good times, Rich, and I can relate to what you're referring to, although I haven't actually experienced it. Personally, I'd take the soups and stews every time over a fish and chip butty.
It's the butty bit I don't get... Why not just have fish & chips on their own, which done properly, is a rather nice meal? What's the attraction of shoving it inside a roll? For me that just makes it way too stodgy, turning the food into a mush - and mushy (or greasy) chips is something I can't stand.
Pity you guys didn't make any rice or pasta dishes. You can knock up some cracking ones on the cheap, which would've been a lot healthier and more nutritious for you than kebabs or chip butties! ;)

I'm feeling pretty sick now.....
My Brother when at uni loved chip butty with raspberry jam and sugar sprinkled in.... madness, but he liked it at the time. A nice bit of Glasgow sausage, tatty scone, brown sauce n a Scottish breakfast roll... now thats hard to beat(has to be good stuff; not that crap you get in the supermarket)

Economy. The bread roll meant a little could go further and that's what it was all about. And why we shared our 'ciggies' too.
There were plenty of pasta and rice dishes, so much so I think it put me off it. Especially the large bags of tesco value dried stuff we went through. Unlike rice however which I could eat all the time. Lentils were a staple too, in fact I still make a cracking daal, homemade chapattis too. I like to think I'm a resourceful chef, unlike Mrs B who will look in the cupboard and say we've got nothing in, whereas I can always rustle something decent from fairly meagre ingredients when we've both been too busy for shopping.

I don't actually eat any of the foregoing. Neither do I have fried food apart from the occasional egg and most of my diet is non red meat. Poultry and fish are OK, but not every day. I am addicted to cheese though! :D

I can never get away with that square sausage yous go through north of the border. It's a decent bit of Cumberland or nowt for me.

Ok, I can get that :)
I do agree, though, that you can eat healthily without spending much, if you know what you're doing - but you need to be willing to COOK, rather than simply opening up a box or packet and waiting for the microwave to go 'ding'! ;)
Marco.

Nah, proper Lorne sausage, from a good butcher, served as Grant describes, knocks yer Cumberland into the weeds! :trust:

thats why I always have plenty jars of herbs n spices in; not as good as fresh but last a while and you can make bits n bobs taste great with the right herbs etc. Ive a pasta machine so easy to make spaghetti and add a bit of cheese and herbs and some tomato sauce.. nice meal, cheap and easy....even a tin of meatballs cut up and chilli added can taste ok if stuck
Yup, sounds great! :)
That's why it always makes me laugh when you hear some chav fucks moaning: 'Oh, we can't afford to eat properly', who you usually see in supermarkets with shopping trolleys brim-full of expensive ready meals and booze, or worse, buying half a dozen scratch cards and some fags on the way out....
Get yer fooking priorities right, ya dumb chavvy wankaz, is what I feel like telling them!!
Marco.
aye, one of the easiest is a quick soda bread. flour water soda, a bit of soured milk and salt... 2 mins mix and shape and into a hot oven... its that quick and super as bread, toast or dipped in soup. costs pennies

You would expect those on lower incomes (or benefit) to consider economic ways of producing wholesome meals, but the opposite seems to apply. Micowave 'pizza' or chicken nuggets, chips & beans anybody?

Nee way man.
Down here a meat pattie is called a burger. Not that I have many mind. I must eat meat once a week if at all these days

Lol, indeed... Unfortunately, they don't have the brains to work that out! They need totally re-educating out of their bad habits of a lifetime.

Done right, there's nothing wrong with that.
For me, it's all about the quality of ingredients, so it would have to be free-range eggs (with nicely golden-yellow yolks), decent quality beans (not yer cheapo shite), with a touch of tomato puree added, to enrich the sauce, and some cracked black pepper on top, and proper hand-cut cooked chips, not the crappy oven variety - then yum, yum, but I'd probably want a sausage in there, too! :)

So the healthy eating regime is going well then? You've got your protein, some carbohydrate, fruit and vegetable there. Good stuff.
Tonight was halloumi cheese, cous cous and salad with lashings of nandos sauce. Lovely.

After reading all this, I'm hungry, out to the kitchen, perhaps a bread roll and some cheddar cheese.

Quality.
For breakfast, I'm having some bagels filled with poached frogspawn and kippers, with steamed Balut eggs (shown below), inside in a roll within a roll, of course....

You need to have piece and butter with that, salted butter cut thick so you leave teethmarks after every bite.

Perfect!
Oh and all washed down with a pint of Sheperd Neame Spitfire Gold.
