Andre

I don't know what this is about, but frankly you are more than welcome here. Post as much as you like. Your recent contributions to AOS have been IMHO very good and interesting and really nice to see.

Keep up the good work.

Edit Okay I now know what we are talking about here...I think. I feel there has been a wee bit of an over reaction. I for one like some ELP, but not all. I love the first album and bits of Trilogy, Tarkus, Brain Salad Surgery etc, but frankly imho some of the music/tracks are poor Jeremy Bender and the like, I really don't like those type of songs ELP do every so often. Chris GW has been down the ELP road and does not like them (reading between the lines) Andre seems to love them. Both opinions are valid as with all types of music and life in general we love some things and dislike others. It would be boring if we all liked the same thing. I hate football and sport in general..I don't see the point in it...thats me, I have been accused of having no soul...oh well. Look lets not ever get personal over likes and dislikes. Its enough to say I don't like that etc or I do...lets just move on and agree to disagree. Andre you are still very welcome post away...as is Chris also.

We should add to the forum's Ethos that listening to at least one ELP album per day is mandatory. Except for those liking football.

Never did like ELP much. The way The Nice trampled over 'Hang On To A Dream' was a dreadful warning of the horrors to come.

It's not the fact that he dislikes ELP it's the comment:
''Those are wise words from a boy who bought a lot of ELP albums, then grew up.''

What that then ELP is for kids or something! I think Chris wants to look back at what he listerns to & take that back..

For the record yes the rubbish like ''Geremy Bender'', ''Are You Ready Eddy'', ''Sheriff'' etc are just fillers not to be taken seriously even i think they have no place withing the albums.Another thing i wish people would stop doing is tarring the early material with the later material brush. As far as i'm concerned ELP were over after the two year 'Brain Salad Surgery' world tour..Atlantic records destroyed this band. The material on the Works albums are pure & simply desperation..''Fanfare for the comman man'' is just pure shit.

Hey fella's, please don't do this...

I got to know Trilogy first, not long after it came out in 1970 (ok, I was THIRTEEN years old at the time.....). It's a great album and the first track and especially the title one's lyrics mean something to me now. Brain Salad Surgery may be a bit OTT in places (including the pre TD sequencer at the very end), but the later 1996 CD mastering seems to make sense of it all. I could never understand tarkus, which seems rushed to me.....

OK, so to some, this may be "pop prog," but this band amongst others are part of my spiritual and musical growth and still very enjoyable indeed.........

Hey Andre, 'Sherrif and Benny The Bouncer may well be fillers, but they still have the task of lightening the load amongst some serious and emotionally heavy tracks...........

Hi Andre

I can see how what was said can be taken as an insult, you may even say that it is one, but is it worth falling out over one possibly tongue in cheek comment ? I don't know only Chris can comment on that. The problem with typing things in to the either of the net is that sometimes a throw away comment gets taken the wrong way or gets taken the right way but should not have been typed.

I like you would feel a bit annoyed if someone typed that about the music and bands I like, but to be honest I would not now days allow it to wind me up that much. Years ago a friend used to call Hawkwind...Falcon Farts that angered me a lot, but do you know what its his loss. Just as Chris not liking ELP is his loss....guess what I am not a huge fan of the Beatles, The Stones and Frank Zappa (like some of it, but not all of it), thats my loss perhaps, but I just don't get the first two, and frankly Zappa wrote stuff imho just to shock and offend a lot of the time...real pity as he is/was a fantastic guitarist and musician/composer...but his lyrics...often are crude school yard rubbish...imho. Chris and I wont fall out over that, he loves Zappa and I don't..though I respect his talent.

Implying someone should grow up is a bit below the belt especially as I don't see why it should have been said...it was so maybe you should have a chat with Chris via PM and try and sort it out.

There are things in life worth and requiring a fight but not imho music.

To put the record straight:
I do like ELP but in small doses.

I tried to convey that in a light hearted way.

Dan,
Personally, I'd stick where you're at. Those two are enough ELP for anyone!
Andre responded to that in what was quite frankly, a personally insulting manner.

Wise words from a man with a great music taste track record

No Andre. Those are wise words from a boy who bought a lot of ELP albums, then grew up.

I responded by trying to point out that I don't restrict my taste in music to one type & time frame. I broadened my taste quite some years ago. Andre appears not to have done. I don't have a problem with this, but I was attacked.

I tried as diplomatically as I could given the circumstances to ask him not to bring personal attacks into discussions

You, my friend, might do well to learn the difference between the message & the messenger - if you don't agree with my opinion, then criticise my opinion, not me.

I'd like to think that at least some people here see me as fair minded and recognise that I choose my words carefully. For Christ's sake, I defended Shippy's right to express his opinion!!

At no time did I seek to offend anyone. Nor did I seek to imply that anyone was posting too much (how you get that from what I wrote is beyond me).

What that then (sic) ELP is for kids or something!

Well, actually, yes! I'm an ELP fan up to as stated, 'Brain Salad Surgery' but in all seriousness, how can anyone take their vocals seriously? Totally shallow juvenile pretention! Yep, the music is fun and comes over with a sense of authority, but the lyrics are childlike.

I think Chris wants to look back at what he listerns (sic) to & take that back..

Hmmmm, that seems a pretty childish statement in itself. I've not heard that sort of terminology since I was in the playground. Certainly this is a first for me on an adult forum.

For the record yes the rubbish like ''Geremy Bender'', ''Are You Ready Eddy'', ''Sheriff'' etc are just fillers not to be taken seriously even i think they have no place withing the albums.

Again, Hmmmm, I rather like these tracks not because they have any significant musical merit but because I like their quirky nature. Good tongue in cheek light hearted rock 'n' roll entertainment. Maybe a bit of maturity is required to enjoy them simply for what they are.

''Fanfare for the comman (sic) man'' is just pure shit.

Hmmm for a thid time. While you're slagging that piece off, consider it was composed in 1942 by Aaron Copeland, one of America's most highly regarded composers. Keith Emerson has just done his usual rock 'n' roll take on a well loved and regarded classical piece of music. Seems ok to me.

I don't think anything Greg Lake, Carl Palmer and Keith Emerson produced was supposed to be taken seriously apart possibly Lake's rather shallow christmas song which is anti-establishment, anti-Christmas but gets trotted out year after year because no-one actually listens to the words. They are all good fun musicians who have some clever understanding of how to make a living in the music business. I'm not sure about the others but Keith graduated from the Royal School of Music.

'Lighten up' seems to be applicable here.

Just my take on it all. I'm off now for a serious Tarkus session. Hell, Armadillo World War One tanks

Yes and the first guy murdered one of my fave Journey songs....if Steve Perry was dead he would be spinning in his coffin.

I agree Hamish X factor this time round is very poor/up the left, and as usual the great British public have not got a clue. Last week two of the best got voted into the bottom two. John and Edward who are so crap are doing well.....what a JOKE.

Daryl is imho the most talented vocalist since Leona but hes unlikely to win....but should. However tonight his version of the theme from Armageddon was his worst performance vocal so far imho; that he has done.

The "I kissed a Girl" song only makes sense for the guy who sang it if he were gay...the original song is about a womans first kiss with a woman. Hate the song load of crap....and not because of its subject matter (I like Wendy and Lisa by the way)...its just crap imho.

Hi Chris

I must confess that the dynamic of this *issue* escapes me a bit. I think its all got blown out of all perspective. Andre is maybe a wee bit sensitive about his only liking Prog and how others view that....not an issue imho though I would hold the view that it is a wee bit limiting but each to their own. If I have an issue with Andre it would be that he limits his Prog to music before 1973/74. I think he is missing out on alot, but its a free country and each to their own.

Yes Chris I do think you are a fair minded.

Andre, I have repeatedly said on this forum that I don't like genres & see all music as just music - I prefer some & care less for some.

However, I never ever judge anyone by their taste in music - other people here will confirm that.
I did not intend for you to interpret what I wrote as the implication that ELP is not 'grown up music' or that you are in some way childish - I meant to infer that my taste has matured to encompass many different types & styles of music. I apologise for giving you that impression.
