Yesterday i was given two of these.

The owner said he was going to chuck them out, but thought i might like them.
They are speakers........of sorts.
I was going to chuck them out too, as people seem to pass on their rubbish to me all the time.
But these were a bit different so i gave them a listen.

First impressions were surprisingly good. Especially when it dawned on me they were as efficient as my regular speakers.
Off came the grille covers to reveal this.

Wharfedale Super 8s in a mini horn enclosure.
Considering they were built from 3/8 plywood, they are remarkably good to listen to. Totally undamped and quite dynamic.
Ok so they're not going to raise any eyebrows, but worth keeping methinks.

My first speakers were a pair of Wharfdale RS 8DD's built into Wharfdale designed distributed port enclosures, of approximately 2 cu ft.

The Super 8 is, I believe, the designation given to these designs by Castle Acoustics when they bought up the stock (and licence?) from Wharfdale.

Don't throw them out - they're far too good for that!

Interesting, Al. I suspect that inside some better quality cabinets they'd perform none too shabbily :)

It always amazes me just how good older drive units like that are, and how much more musical they sound in comparison to many modern drive units.

You'll need to pop round sometime and have a listen to my Lockwood Majors with Tannoy 15" Monitor Golds - they're rather different from the Spendors, which I know you quite liked.

I won't be throwing them out. Anything that lasts this long deserves another chance. I guess these might be around 2 cu ft.
Nope just measured them, they're much smaller at 1.3cu ft.

Yep thats something i wondered about. Maybe worth a try. But as they are now, they have a vintage charm that would not cut the mustard today, but is nice anyway.
The cabinets are a bit of a puzzle. he's gone to great lengths to produce neat joints and a respectable finish, yet the cabinets are out of square.
I could bring them along so you can see what i'm on about. They wont take much carrying.:)
