Seems a good deal, I have NAD 3130 and Proton 520, I like both.
Never owned the Sonata, but I do have AP2's, AP3's, Mini Monitors and Gold Monitors, quite like them all. Watch out for rotted foam surrounds on the AP2 and AP3, can be replaced though.
I believe that the tweeter in the Sonatas is the same as in the Minis, the Gold Monitor tweeter is just that bit smoother.

That that cheap Audax tweeter in the Sonatas and the Minis can sound fine, the Sonatas have bigger cabinets and bass units than in the Minis and Gold Monitors, so bass should be better.
Worth trying the Gold Monitors though, for the slightly sweeter Peerless soft dome tweeter.

Back in the 90s, JPW seemed to get a lot right for very little money.
I think they were an independent company back then. Since being absorbed by a conglomerate things have gone rapidly down the plughole.

Did inmates in prison make the JPW sonata speakers ??

I think there may be a thread on this somewhere. I found a file and hacksaw inside mine, just joking.

I've read they were exclusive to richer sounds back then ?

I thought that they went back further than Richer Sounds, and that the BBC had some of their speakers.

Yeah, the cabinets were made at Dartmoor prison. My father in law worked as in woodworking instructor there and was heavily involved in the process.
I bought a pair of JPW P1's from Hi-FI Hangar, Steve (who has received favourable mention on here) re-foamed them for me prior to purchase. There is a small piece on their website detailing his like for JPW's among similarly priced speakers of that period. http://www.hifihangar.co.uk/blog/budget-giant-killer-speakers

About 10 years ago I compared Spendor BC1 and JPW AP3, I was surprised that the AP3 were so musical, in most respects better than the BC1, possibly the extreme top end of the BC1 was a little smoother, probably due to the supertweeter.
i find loudspeakers made in prison tend to sound "shut in"
I'm here all week etc.

I was told, on good authority, that JPW stands for 'Jobs (for) Prison Workers'.
Made a nice change from Mailbags...

I refoamed (well, it was done for me!) a pair of AP3 which were an ever present in my system until recently. They are a really underrated speaker.

Does the AP3 work well in free space?

Get a pair of old linn kan stands for the sonatas. Work very well. The better the amp, the closer you can put them to a back wall and reinforce the bass. Great little speakers.

It depends what you mean by free space but I had them playing into a 7m x 5m room and didn't experience any issues. The bass is nice but not woofy and the mid range is lovely.
Sat bagged in my bloody garage now unfortunately.

I always had a little liking for JPW speakers.
Used to have a pair of P1's a good few years back.
Maybe someday, I'll look for a pair of AP3's and keep them as good ''back up'' speakers.
