View Full Version : Acoustic Research The AR One Turntable - Protractor and Stylus Advice Please...

Hi All.

I've just been lucky enough to acquire one of these in great condition! Bearings and motor seem to run perfectly. :)

So my questions:

What protractor should i use to align the stylus? I cant find one when i do a web search...
What stylus should i try with it? I was thinking a Denon 103R, But will this work with the arm?
If i went with teh 103 i was thinking of trying the Schitt Mani phono stage with it - anyone have experience with this combo?
What is the arm? I've read somewhere that the stock arm was a rebranded Mission arm, good?

Baerwald or Stephenson protractor off vinyl engine (I use baerwald), make sure it's printed to scale. It's a Jelco OEM arm - not bad, not great.

I reckon the DL103 might not play well with the arm. I'd go for something like a mid range AT (440MLA) or Nagaoka 150...

Thanks for the input.

I was interested in trying some low output MC carts - i've tried a lot of MM carts on my other Deck (Techie 1200) and settled on the high output MC Denon DL110. One of the reasons that i got this deck was to try out some low output MC's... but is the arm not going to be a good match with this sort of cart?

The mass of the arm is medium/low. If you want to try low output MCs, you are likely to need more mass at the headshell.

All is not lost though, as you could experiment with fitting headshell weights, or even just a decent blob of BluTak to start off with. There are thin 3g weights available for use with Technics headshells that may do the job. If necessary you can use two. Just raise the arm slightly to compensate for the extra height needed.

Your DL-110 will likely have a similar compliance to the DL-103, so if you can get that sounding OK, so should the 103!
