Anyone know where i can source Teflon (PTFE) Board from without Copper clad as i'm wanting to re-manufacture a Leak 'Stereo 20' tag board, to new design, cutting down on the original wiring & with Connex posts..

Just out of intrest Dave do you know what the old brown heat board they used to make tag board from is called?

Yes, it was Paxolin, Google it!

PTFE cheaper here, assuming its the same stuff. RS can be expensive for such things.

It's an absolute bastard to cut!

It's one of the slipperiest substances known to mankind.

I'd just use the 3mm Tufnol sheet that Direct Plastics also sells. Why mess about with teflon for this application?

Thanks Guy but Tufnol will withstand 120 degree C Where as Teflon will withstand double that..

Both 'Tufnol' and 'Paxolin' are trade names for 'synthetic resin bonded paper' (SRBP); used in the '60s for PCBs by Quad, Radford and Leak amongst others. Not as good as fibreglass nor Teflon (PTFE).

Why do you need the high temperature handling of PTFE?

Hi Barry
Well looking at this Leak tag board it has some nasty burns to it.I know it's usually down to nasty parts & overheating, bad positioning etc but it shows things can get mighty hot under the hood.I'm just being causious.

Fair enough. If you really want to 'go for broke' then use Teflon; it's just a bugger to machine!

Some interesting information about the ST20 and particularly about overheating.

From the excellent 'Firsts in High Fidelity' The story of HJ Leak & Co by Stephen Spicer.

Nice one guy.I bought one of these to replace the rectifier tube, that should help transformer run cooler anyway.

Indeed although it'll be interesting (as an SS rectifier) to hear whether it sounds the same as a proper GZ34. Some of the newer production (Russian?) 5AR4's I've listened to have sounded really rough, nothing like a Mullard GZ34.

Nothing beats a proper valve rectifier.

And hey, use the P.T.F.E. at least you will sleep soundly knowing you have the best.

The hot transformer was the main reason i switched to the SS Adaptor, another being the crazy asking for NOS 'GZ34' Mullards..I don't fancy changing a Mullard rectifier few years down the line when they have inflated 100% asking price..The SS Rectifier should last for donkies years, it's vastly overrated for what i want to replace the 'GZ34' anyway...& should be more quiet.

Aye trimming to size with a router & corian cutter should give a perfect edge..
