SME 3009 s2 dashpot

Hi all.

I'm currently re-wiring and attempting a service on my SME 3009 S2 non improved tonearm.

The dashpot needs re filling as its dropping like a house brick. Can any tell me if they've had success in re filling this type?
I read it's very difficult to remove the cover to service it. I had a go at rocking it back and forth but I don't really want to force it to much.

Any help would be great.

There was a tool for doing that but not seen one lately. Its a dodgy job. You could try heating it up and see if it reactivates

The cover is glued on and could only be repaired by SME themselves. I say "could" because SME have decided they are now no longer going to service or repair the 3009 or 3012 arms.

The alternative is to ask Audio Origami if they can replace the fluid for you.

I did read there was a tool for this but a Google search returned no images for me.
I few say it's a tricky job and and that you'll probably end up damaging it so best to leave alone but I think I'd prefer it working as it should.

I thought the improved style was easier to re fill for some reason.
Anyway he's got back to me and it's slightly more than i wanted to pay really so i may leave as is or attempt it myself.

£35 +Post so you looking at £45 all in by the time i post it to him.

I didn't really want to spend that much on it at the moment. You never know when payday comes around it maybe a different story

Why not give it a good heating using the good lady's hairdryer? I did this meself on an S2 Improved, but they look pretty similar to me?
I bought the silicone stuff from SME, and its more like grease actually.

I've been in the process of upgrading my Thorens turntable and converting my SME 'Improved' into a heavier mass one with detachable headshell for 6 month now. Going slowly (on the "cheap" side) and step by step to judge the "impact" sound-wise of each tweak, I wanted to dismantle the SME "dash-pot"-tonearm rest & lift assembly from the tone arm base/pivot. But I just don't know how to do that since I don't understand how it's fixed. Can you please tell me if you just "unscrew" it or do you push/pull it from the black axe base/pivot ? Or else ?

I just left mine as is in the end ?, may revisit it some day, though about drilling a 1mm hole in the bottom and filling with silicone grease then seal the hole with a tiny grub screw
I rewired mine with the SME loom allready soldered to the head shell lock nut
I initially just rewired it with cardas but its very easy to damage the little springs in the head shell lock nut pins and I got one sticky one that kept loosing contact. The SME loom was a breeze but not cheap.
Changing the arm tube earth wire is tricky as well

Sorry for the late reply, I've had a very busy week.

If you need to remove the dashpot just loosen the allen screw at the back of the threaded clamp then unscrew from the pillar bearing.
