All very nice King. Not been to Florence - I loved Rome - it will be good when they finish it! ;)
I loved DC - did you go to Arlington cemetery? I found it a very morbidly interesting. The White House I thought looked smaller in real life?
Hi King,
Great pictures (as usual from you), so thanks for sharing :)
I've been to Florence many times, and the pictures you took brought back memories. However, just one small correction:
Florence (Florencia ), Italy
'Florence', in Italian, is 'Firenze' - not "Florencia" ;)
A small point, but an important one :smoking:

Did you know that the White House is whitewashed regularly ? Apparently it was torched by the redcoats in the War Of Independence, and the soot marks show through after a few years.
At least that's what I heard.....

Hi Alex,
I did visit the Arlington cemetery and take some pictures. Unfortunately I searched high and low and could not find the memory card which contains the pictures, probably I have lost it somewhere. I also concur with you that the White House did not seem to be as large as I had expected, the Buckingham Palace dwarfs it by comparison.

Hi Marco,
Thank you for your correction, my mistake. It should be "Firenze" in Italian and "Florentia" in Latin.

Did you do a little dance on the glass floor up the CN tower?
Hi Chris,

The Thousand Islands - What's the difference between a rock & an island?
It must:
Be above water for 365 days a year
Be bigger than one square foot
Support at least one tree or shrub
Presumably, this is where 'Thousand Island Dressing" gets its name from?

There were many luxurious sports cars parking every where, too numerous to count. Despite I have been to many places, for instance, New York, Shanghai, London, Seoul, Tokyo, Rome, Milan, Kula Lumpa and Hong Kong……., it was the first time I saw so many magnificent and glorious beauties displaying their charms in such a small area.
If I had the money I certainly would buy one or some of them.

I am well aware that Monaco is a constitutional monarchy and principality but who cares about the definitions of a principality. As far as I know, Monaco is the name of the country as well as the name of its only and capital city. It is the world's most densely populated sovereign country, and the world's smallest French-speaking country.
This thread is sharing my experiences with other people about different places and cultures which some of the members may like to know or explore. I am not trying to broaden their horizon but showing them that there are some beautiful places in this world which are worth a visit, may be once in a life time.

bloody see gulls! look at its soul less eye... spawn of the devil! ;)
it is a nice picture though
what camera did you use? (sorry if thats already been asked)
Nothing special, it was a Panasonic DMC FZ28.
Actually some of the pictures were taken with a Canon 620 compact as well; I also have a Sony A300. Occasionally I used my friend's LX3 and Fuji FinePix S9600.
In case anyone is interested ornothologically about King's Gull, I believe it is a Yellow-Legged Gull commonly found in the Mediterranean and up until recently believed to be a southern version of our Herring Gull, however through climate change, the Herring Gull has migrated south as the Yellow-Legged Gull has moved north resulting in some hibridisation where chicks did not survive. It has only recently through this observation been identified as a seperate species. Previously it was thought that both species were Herring Gull but the northern variety was distinguished from it's southern version by having flesh coloured legs, hense the Yellow-Legged name tag when it was realised this southern bird was a seperate species.
King's example would appear to be a very early adult just coming into full breading plumage. The grey flecks around the head are the last of it's juvenile plumage and therefore this Gull is probably 3 years old having just completed it's third winter.
There you go. Sometimes I'm a grumpy old man, but othertimes I can positively respond to some very reasonable criticism. Thanks for those pics, King. I've really enjoyed them.
Regards,
Greg

Nice one Greg. Every day's a school day on here - and now I've learned about gulls! My ex-wife's granddad was in the Royal Navy, and she always said he'd come back as a seagull, so I always used to refer to them as "granddad" - now, living next to a big river (the Orwell) - I refer to them as "noisy bast@rds!" as they circle above the house, "messy bast@rds!" when they cr@p on my car! ;)

... I am a bit of a fan of panny compacts it has to be said! I have an lx3 myself as well as a hankering for a gf1!
The LX3 is great and it can take excellent pictures. I hate to carry something heavy while travelling. A digital SLR camera and different focal lenses are a burden, so I always take a compact or prosumer, the lighter, the better.
The Vinyl Adventure

the main prblem with the compacts is the lack of depth of field control possible. the lens on the lx3 is 5.1mm at the wide end. even at f2 the depth of feild can be huge when focusing on anything more than a meter away. hence my desire for a camera with a bigger sensor but still a small body... eg the new panny gf1
http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww282/hamish_gill/intro-001.jpg
I believe that the GF1 is very capable but is it as good as the Olympus E-P1?

Hi Greg,
I admire your knowledge about sea gulls but I actually don’t like them. A few years ago, more than a dozen of my lovely golden carb fish in my little fish pond were all eaten by some sea gulls, bloody murderers. I made revenge by covering the entire pond with a plastic mesh for my new replacements, so the hungry birds could still see their yummy meals but could not eat them, I called that a benevolent imposition. But they have retaliated and humiliated me since with a dirty tactics; they have always used my cars as their toilets. Luckily, they have not brought me their flu and infected me with it yet, I really have to thank them.

it reviews better - faster focus, better kit prime, built in flash.. its the same sensor as the ep1 too so in raw there is no real difference between them. nicer in the hand too
If the GF1 is that good, then it may become my next new toy.

The silver Cave, located 85 km south of Guilin, 25 km from Yangshuo county, is a splendid limestone cave. It runs through 12 mountains and a roundabout tour covers approximately 2 km.
The cave is deep and irregular, with a great number of stalactites of thousand charms, which, in lights glint like silver, hence the name of the cave. These majestic, diamond-like stalactites decorate the cave and make it into a dazzling place. The cave can be divided into three sections: upper cave, lobby and the lower cave, with dozens of distinctive scenery.

Hi King,
The cave pictures are totally awesome! :)
In Tuscany in Italy not far from where my family originate from there is the famous 'Grotta del Vento'.
Check it out here:

We've been there a few times and it's superb!
Marco.
Saw these caves in Slovenia a couple of years ago, totally awesome. Baking hot outside and absolutely bloody freezing down there. They take you by train deep into the caves n(about 2 miles). In shorts and sandals you get frostbite!

"The Concert Hall, known for its exceptional acoustics, has sufficient space for 10,000 people leading symphony orchestras, octets, and a variety of soloists to perform here"

I did not know that there were caves in Tuscany and Slovenia, probaby no body had talked about that before. I am only familiar with the ones in Cheddar and wells because I have been there and they are not far away from where I live.
Yangshuo is a county in Guilin, Guangxi Province, China, it borders the Li River on one side, and is situated on a small plain between a number of karst peaks.

BoatHouse
I was told that there were over two thousand houseboats or boathouses along the canals of Amsterdam. They are very expensive, even the cheapest one will cost over two hundred thousand Euros, as they are in serious demand.

Hi King - Some good pics as always. Have you heard about the photography forum Hamish is heavily involved in? Take a look if not - Real Photographers Forum (http://www.realphotographersforum.com/content.php)
Hi Alex,
Thank you for the link!
Hopefully, I can learn something there. Hamish is a pro and I am no doubt, by any standard, a real amateur.
