View Full Version : CD playback fault
My Exposure 2010s has developed a bug , it plays a speeded up clip before the track starts , the track plays from the beginning ok and continues ok as does the CD right through.
If you select a track it does the same thing quick bit then starts properly. Also when paused it will play the note or word endlessly.
My player does the same thing, but only when used via an external Dac.
Are you using yours as a transport only ?

Thanks Oliver thats it , I've just moved mine to a second system and need to use a DAC because the amp only has two inputs.
btw what brand is your CD player ?
Sounds like the mute is coming off too quickly
Maybe defective or dirty muting relay contacts or faulty components in the analog circuitry
Grant I've edited my post , its the same as Oliver's only happens when used with DAC.
Just noticed from another thread Oliver has the same CDP.
Strike them then.. Must be in the digital domain... Are you both using optical ot coax?
Optical but I will try coaxial to see.
I am using Optical, I could not get the coax to work.
I think the Exposure has a muting circuit in its internal DAC, my Caiman does not AFAIAA.
I have tried 2 blu ray players with the Caiman, and no problems, so I assume that the problem is not having a muting circuit in the DAC
Oliver
Just tried coax and nope nothing same as Oliver's , so is this a fault ?
Anyway at least its ok as a one box CDP.
I remember folk diy-ing cd player o/p mute transistors by removing them to improve the sound; the digital circuit should have a mute , either transistor or on the chip. as its on 2 of same machines, then it may be that the company did away with this mute; find it unlikely that 2 machines develop the same fault or have both been modded.....but you never know
I've been in contact with Exposure over this and they had never heard of the problem before . I'll update them on Monday with our discussion.
maybe they have been modded then? be interesting to know. most mute circuits just take the signal to ground via a transistor while the search goes on then its lifted again. its not in circuit as such if memory serves...Jez may be of more use than me though
Barry,
I purchased my 2010s exdem, and the dealer is no longer in business, so no idea if it was modded.
It is strange that both players do not work via Coax, maybe the mute is on continuously via Coax, and does not work via Optical
It will be interesting to hear Exposure's response to your enquiry.
Oliver
Yes it will be interesting , its been a couple of emails so far but I'll phone on Monday.
Hi Barry,
If it helps, you can mention that I have the same problem.
Yesterday, Tony Brady (Exposure) sent me the little jumper (that I had lost) to reconnect the digital outputs, and he was aware that I was going to use the outputs for the first time. I purchased my 2010s around 2004.
What vintage is your player ?
Oliver
Oliver , I bought mine 6 months ago s/h so I'm unsure of the age . Its Tony I have been corresponding with , jumper ? lost ? should I have one ?

Barry,
You are ok (both digital outputs would not work if yours was missing), I took the jumper out myself in 2004.
Oliver
Unfortunately Tony at Exposure is away for a couple of weeks.

That's bad timing for us !
Do you have another CD / DVD / or Blu Ray to use as a transport until Tony's return ?

Yes , I don't use the Exposure in my main system (signature) plus I also have a CA 752BD in the main set up. I'll selling the Exposure soon .
Tony got back to me but other than maybe the DAC causing the problem he didn't know , and said the optical and BNC were fed from the same source , strange one was working and not the other . I've tried three DACs and its the same.
I asked Tony about the BNC not working on my player & he said it should work if the optical works. I only have one dac, but I will try via BNC to my AV amp & see if it works.
I cannot live with the unmuted sounds via the Exposure (especially tiresome when hitting pause ), so will use my Panny blu ray player as a transport.
Barry,
Does your Sony CDP work ok via your DAC(s) without the sound bleeding through when paused ?
I ask because I have decided to get a new (to me) CD player or transport to use via my Caiman II, and am wondering if the muting problem is the norm, or specific to Exposure ?
Regards
Oliver
Yes the Sony is fine and my Tosh, it was just the Exposure.
