G'day all,
I'm from Australia (pronounced ‘straya’), the land of bogans. I'm as obsessed with photography as I am with hifi. When I say hifi, it's very lo-fi compared to some of the amazing systems you folks have.
My appreciation for hifi was influenced by my grandfather (also a passionate photographer), who had built a pair of KEF Concerto speakers back in the day. His speakers and turntable amazed me as a kid and I would sit there and listen for hours. Unfortunately my grandparents lived 8 hours drive away, so we only got to visit them once a year.
I didn't settle in one place until my early thirties, so my own hifi 'journey' began about 5 years ago. I saw a Linn LP12 the same age as me, in a record shop for a very decent price. I thought long and hard about it because I knew what I was getting myself into, but decided to take the plunge. I had it fixed up by a local specialist who was great to deal with. He understood my limited budget and wasn’t afraid to use non Linn components.
I've moved houses a few times since, so I've only just set up my 'stereo' (as we call it here) in its new spot.
My girlfriend found a pair of DCM Time Window speakers in a local secondhand shop a few weeks ago which was a bonus and well spotted by her! This prompted me to finally set up my stereo more permanently.
AOS has been a good source of info for me for quite a few years now, so thought it about time I showed myself and made a contribution.
For some reason, quite often when I research something hifi related, I seem to end up here. Also, I think in the UK you just have a much bigger market that allows way more VFM and a bigger cottage industry. We get a bit ripped off here in Oz.
You seem to have a good friendly 'vibe' going on here, with a bit of harmless banter and lack of snobbery. Or do I have the wrong forum?!
Looking forward to adding to discussions.
Oh, and my music knowledge is a bit limited, but my tastes mostly gravitate towards 60’s, 70’s rock, soul, funk, jazz.
Btw, can anyone advise the best emoticon for sarcasm, as I'll be using that one a lot.
Thanks for having me.
Ben
