The Ortofon Quintet Black has arrived :) The Mrs and girls are preoccupied so i'm going in for install :eek: I may be some time ..........

Nice one Rob, I was reading a review of the Quintet Black vs the Cadenza Black and the reviewer mentioned it was 80% there for a fraction of the price.

Yeah good shout! I love the quintet Black.
The detail retrival is stunning but not at the expense of mid range. And it's not too expensive to replace frequently :)

:eek: Can honestly say, hand on heart, with about a side and a half in this is unbelievably good and the thing has got to still be settling in :eek: cant even begin to break it down in words but will later. The combination of this cart and the Sansui AU 919 is just stunning !!! the 919 has been completely overhauled / rebuilt and is probably settling in too :eek: :eek: and to think I'm listening with tone defeated / bypassed :eek: Will report back................. tunes :D :D

Thanks Andrew - bless. Listening to Steely Dan - 'Babylon Sisters', nearly had an accident :eek: just gorgeous and then 'nineteen' mama !...... a few more tunes til bedtime .... :) By the way, totally agreed regards Ortofon, absolutely love em, so spot on. My first Sansui and oh my gosh, everything they say about the 919 is true, I totally cannot believe the sound this thing produces without a tone control in sight - stunning :)

Adam sums it up right there, I'd also add that the QB gets to the heart of the recording without glossing over so each album is presented as what it is, honest and accurate which is what I love about Ortofon. In a nut shell this cart plays the music 'properly' warts and all and is as musical as the track is ;) it just gets about doing an excellent job of capturing the heart of the music. If you want an overall signature or presentation of romantic, sweet, fruity, flavoured then look elsewhere. This cart is an honest and excellent player of the music, afterall there's already a flavour in each piece of music. The QB digs deep and extracts the music / flavour that is in the track. I'm about 5hrs or so in so very early days for a new cart but already just wonderful and insightful player of music - very highly recommended without hesitation - found what I was looking for... :D

Quintet Black after about 50hours & get the VTA dialled in they really start to sing one of the best out there under £1k
in a high end arm / phono stage combo Sublime
Nuded Mine by mistake today & swear it sounds a bit better

Totally agree Scott, what a stonking cart !! I'm still up playing tunes even after being told to turn down a bit (not that it was loud). VTA is vital with these as you say so I made sure that was right from the off after alignment. Listened very keenly during on the fly vta adjust. I know when these Shibata clad babies arnt right from my beloved 2M Black, they just wont move you but by gosh when they are right they most certainly do :D I must have about 8hrs on mine now and boy oh boy to re-quote you sir - Sub-bloomin-blime :)

Hi Graham, I'ts the minimum boxes but best possible quality approach for me now Graham. I have a completely overhauled / rebuilt Sansui AU 919 integrated amp with built in mm/mc phono stage and it is a phenomenal peice of kit without exaggeration, it's been a revelation :)

Looks great Robbie, think I'll stick with the 2M black as I don't need the extra expense of a decent SUT...coz if I went the MC route I'd like a good quality adjustable SUT :) :)

Dont blame you to an extent Graham. I'm fortunate that the 919 has a superb inbuilt phono stage otherwise like you I cant be asked with trying to work it all out, trying different boxes, trying to get it right. The 2MB is a corker, I wouldnt lie and say there's a whole heap in it compared to the QB to be honest.

Absolutely correct. I have friends who hate bling but have commented on how much they love the look of my MK5g, even my daughter the other day without prompting, walked over to it and said 'Dad, I really like your turntable, it looks so cool' who am I to argue :)

Glad you are enjoying it dude. I guess you have put the Spendors on the backburner for now?

I'm still getting used to the 'neutrality' of my new AT33 PTG/II - amazing how much more detail it digs out of good recordings but then you realise how some recordings aren't quite as good as you thought they were ... But this is the price to pay for progress I guess!

:lol: I just couldnt get on with this particular configuration, the middle stayed the same but the top and bottom sounded confused :D

Exactly Jules, Accuracy is something I love, accurate and revealing was the first time I really heard my system at it's best, when everything, all the upgrades etc had come together and it opened my eyes. Hearing what's really in those grooves, the genuine essence of each individual recording neither glossed over, sweetened, boogied, hefted, fruitened by way of inherent signature, I think you get my meaning. Some people cant get on with accurate and revealing because warts and all are presented where warts and all exist. Personally I love it, the individuality of each recording laid bare, getting inside, I just cant get enough - fab :).
