Well one hour on and I only liked Neu and Harmonia (perhaps?) of the groups I had not heard of. I already like Kraftwerk.

German (Kraut Rock) music is avante garde, lacking melody and is quite often just noise in many cases and thats why Can, Amon Dual etc are unlikely to find there way into my record collection...I like a tune of some sort. All in my opinion of course.

Try to listen to Amon Duul's "Hijack", then... ;)

Hi Andre is it possible to put in some of the links to music samples so we can get a feel for the music. Like Neil the music played on the documentary held little interest for me

Dimitri.
Amon Duul II 'Tanz Der Lemminge' ('Dance Of The Lemmings') is their best work.

I take note, thanks Andre.

I simply consider that Haijack is a perfect album for people who actually dislike Kraut stuff. Probably becouse it has soooo little of it inside. ;)

One early-ish Can track to try is "Halleluwah" (or some similar mis-spelling) from Tago Mago. The early LP (and I believe the properly re-done CD, not the Spoon original) have incredible bass and Jaki's drumming is mesmerising (you try to keep time like he does, it ain't easy)..

For melodies, I'd recommend Ashra from the Virgin years. Manuel Gottsching was a good composer of dreamy electronica as well as a great rock guitarist IMO...

Here John, not much on the tube some here i mentioned..for me Out Of Focus were the best Krautrock band...What that BBC programme concentrated on was the political side of it, probably why most didnt like much of it

Hi Andre
Thanks
Lucifer's Friend

Nektar wernt actually German, they were English just residing over there.Another Kraut band that was also English were ODIN..

Lucifers friend were an heavy rock band as you say till you listern to their ''Where The Groupies Killed The Blues' LP which is more progressive..Another example of this behaviour is the Aunt Mary band, they were also an heavy rock band, but the 2nd LP 'janus' is pure Prog...
