DAC ADDA 2402 Digital Audio Denmark

Another day, another DAC.

These things are like carts for vinyl players.
They all sound slightly different and are always interesting to try out.

Well, actually this is an AD/DA unit.
ADDA 2402 is a high performance DAC from about year 2000.
Original price was £1498 ==> now £200. Meant for pro digital mastering.

What is interesting here is the fact that a 16 year old DAC still works.
I mean the sound is balanced, natural with rock steady stereo imaging.
Even back in the late 90's these guys were building a special steady internal digital clock source.

In comparison this beats the Asus Xonar Essence STX. The Xonar is fantastic,
but in comparison ADDA 2402 is more neutral with no hype in the sound quality.

Very nice.. I like finding old pro dacs. Was it found on ebay?

I have the cover open.
This is a beast. Very complicated.
Looks like it runs on an Intel processor under some operating system.

I'll post pictures tomorrow.

I got this along with 220 other audio items in a lot purchase.
Next pro dac to test is Sony MDS-E12 rack size pro mini-disc recorder.

dAD have made some fine convertors. Squeeze an xmos USB board into this and you'll have a great modern DAC.

Thanks for that Juha! Interesting to a geek - I just like to know what DAC and ADC chips these things use..

Looks like the Infineon chip is a microcontroller so perhaps controls all the options available from the front panel? It's near the receiver chip ... Also interesting that there is a third clock for something whereas I'd guess a lesser bit of equipment might derive a clock for non-audio from the same audio clock?

DAC though is an AKM AK4394VF using the Crystal (or Cirrus Logic - there was a company name change, not sure which is current) CS8414 chip as a digital receiver.

ADC is the Crystal CS5397 on the second photo - EDIT: you already said that.

Must have been a pretty new chip the AKM DAC back in 2000! It's pretty popular and used in a lot of audio gear.
