Spotted this on the 'bay................CLICK (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301856570010?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

Any of you folks own one or had any dealings with this guy? If so, what are your opinions?

Thanks in advance.

Personally I wouldn't touch that.

The earth connection to the transformer mounting bolt is very poor and doesn't meet regulations.
I don't like the twisted bare wire used on the cables, particularly near the incoming mains.
Not impressed with the glued nature of the pcb and smoothing capacitor.

All IMHO :)

He's not a "trader" any more any non-trade member selling on this forum is a trader..

It clearly says it's a home-made item he made for himself - there appear to be no claims of it being a commercial product, there being any others made for anyone to own, or that he has any intention of making any more.

It's a simple DIY project being sold on. As with all other people's DIY projects you need to solve any potential dangers before plugging it in..

What's the arsey reply in aid of?

For your information a use the term 'trader' as a figure of speech. I was a member of a forum (nothing to do with hifi) that had an enormous sales section, a lot of us used to buy, sell, and swop items with each other so we used to refer to each other as 'traders'.

Whilst i'm not implying that any of the non-trade members are actually traders, have you irrefutable evidence to support your bold and confident claim or are you merely assuming they are not?

As for the ebay 'seller' do you know him? If you do then you can confidently state that he is not a trader, not that it makes the slightest difference to me, he is when all said and done selling his items on ebay.
If he is a pal of yours, then it might interest you to know that when i contacted him to enquire about the suitability of his PSU with my Caiman and Capella, he offered to build a dual power supply for £140, or with 'Mundorf' caps for £150, but you'll already know he makes these?

Now that doesn't make him a 'trader', lets just assume that he's an enthusiast that like to supplement his income from time to time. And again, i'm not passing judgement, we all have to make a living.

So do you wish to make a helpful, polite and constructive contribution like Alan's or do you just want to bitch?

Calm down mate for god's sake! It wasn't arsey at all - sorry if you read it that way, perhaps that's the frame of mind you were in when you read it...

Your original post implies that you think the seller is making a product for general sale and you are asking if anyone has bought one of his products, have an opinion of them and, if they had, was he a trustworthy trader/manufacturer of these products.

If you read the listing, it quite clearly states that it was a one-off that he made for himself as a DIY product for a Cambridge Audio Dacmagic.. He's over-sold it and gone a bit of a sales trip with his listing, yes, but it still explains that he made it for himself.

The reply from Firebottle seemed to trust your implication that it was a trader manufacturing these brand new for sale and so he stated that it didn't comply with safety regulations - which only apply to manufacturers, not people making their own DIY stuff, hence obviously Firebottle was ALSO under the impression that it was a manufactured product based on your original post...

So the whole thread was going to go down a misleading path for absolutely no reason until someone pointed out that it is just a one-off DIY product for sale and that the guy doesn't appear to be a trader in a commercial sense other than selling his own personal items. "Trader" has legal implications which I assume you would use deliberately as opposed to the more usual "seller" .

NOW you're telling us that you got in contact with the guy and he's offering to make you a new one! Well... that's information you didn't disclose ! It changes the situation..

Because you didn't disclose that info, we didn't know what angle you're coming from so don't get all upset if it leads to some confusion in replies (and what's the whole "because you're defending him, you must his mate and in some conspiracy together!" situation you're insinuating? :mental:)

So... let's start again.

If - as you now let us know - that he's offering to make you one like that then, no I wouldn't touch it either for the same safety reasons as Firebottle says. Not going to take much for that cap to come loose and short out on the case for a start. Secondly it looks a bit cheaply made internally anyway.. For that money you could probably get a more fancily regulated one too.
