Just interested to know what turntable folks are using and what they think their strengths are.:)
I use a tarted-up old 'DJ deck', which is hardly worth mentioning, really.

Strengths - Both really easy to set up & use, even for cack-handed me, and neither sound too shabby.

Nice! Love the tonearm, in particular. I suspect that a Denon DL-103 would perform rather well in there! ;)

Someday maybe ..... have an Ortofon (purchased from Grant of this parish) which is nice - but the Shure/JICO combo has balls!

I don't have a turntable at present. But I'm planning on getting an SME Model 10, fitted with the 9'' V tonearm.
My father has this exact SME turntable combo and it sounds very good indeed!
I very much doubt that I'll be getting the model 15.

I use what once was a cheap unfettled Rega Planar 3 w/RB300. It now has an acrylteller acrylic platter, tangospinner aluminium subplatter, Edwards Big Blue Belter(!), 24v motor upgrade, groovetracer counterweight and most notable - well, to my ears - M91ED cartridge w/JICO SAS stylus.
Each upgrade has been a step towards a satisfying sound; the motor and subplatter making most difference to the speed stability, but the Shure really reaches down into the music and pulls out the detail without being too analytical.
Someday maybe ..... have an Ortofon (purchased from Grant of this parish) which is nice - but the Shure/JICO combo has balls!

Honestly, I really don't have any problems with it. It's sturdy as a concrete bunker and simply works day in day out with no hassles. Sound is lovely, and maintenance is minimal, I love it sez I.

I have a fully "Funked" DJ deck. I like the openness and clarity of sound it delivers.
JBE slatedeck series 3 at present. Nice solid dd turntable.. Not much torque but it doesnt really need it. Sounds good to me and currently using a sme 3009 and shure 55e

Yes its from kirdon-image on the bay. Think thats how you spell it.. Not cheap but quite nice things and would go nice with your srm

I love the Funk Saffire too in a picture like that. I guess you have to have the home furnishings to match. It always looks to me like a deep space mining colony in star wars. And I can hear my mum saying "and who's going to dust it then"?
But a fabulous deck - I could listen to it all day. As long as somebody else dusts it! :D
I hadn't realised anyone else on this place had even seen one, never mind heard one and owned one. I'm not as alone as I thought :cool:

The Funk does look funky and by all accounts a superb sounding TT but IMO I do wish they would drop the tacky LED's.
Townshend Elite Rock. Very natural and powerful sounding, especially now Max has fixed the Merlin power supply ( sounds much cleaner ). My decca gold cartridge adds a touch of class as well http://theartofsound.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Dunno, Nathan, but the 'girly-pink hue', to my eyes anyway, aesthetically, does it no favours whatsoever, unless the T/T is being pitched at women... *However*, that aside, I do like the basic looks, and I'm not normally a fan of 'translucent-style' T/Ts, such as those, say, from Clearaudio.
Furthermore, I've always admired Arthur for his thinking outside of the box, both when it comes to the design and aesthetics of T/Ts, and for not being afraid to inject some colour into our sometimes rather boring, drab and grey world, as evidenced on many of this designs... Just not pink (!) [Although, of course, the historical significance of such hasn't escaped me] ;)

For reviewing - Michell Gyro SE.
Reasons: It looks lovely, it sounds lovely and has spinny weights!
For general listening - Garrard 301.
Reasons: Bass and the fact that I love it to bits. Oh, and the bass - did I mention that?
In the dining room - B&O Beogram 8002.
Reasons: Sounds great, is automatic and matches the rest of the Beolab 8000 system in there.
In my 'man-cave' - Nothing at the moment.
Reason: I've just cleared a big space for a big new arrival...:eyebrows:

If you can change the colour and have them off then its pretty pretty...dont fancy a permenently lit up one and especially pink

Pink Triangle LPT with a Nagaoka MM cart.
Was a bit of an eBay bargain.
It's my first turntable since using my Dads old Sharp in the early 90s.
I put records on it and music comes out the other end!
Garrard 401 in twin tier slate plinth. love it for it's bass and drive. Now use it with a Mission 774 and Denon DL-S1 though.

There's a switch on the power supply to turn the led on - so you can use it with or without illumination.
And pretty obviously it wouldn't be hard to change the colour of the led if you really want it lit up but not pink
Although, what's wrong with pink, I really don't know :cool:

I'm using a Kenwood KD-990 with a DV20XH. It's an extremely quiet deck, great drive, very clean sounding yet still very musical for want of a better word. I very much like the end of side automatic stop and arm lift.

Recently I picked up a scruffy Thorens TD-125 with a Grace G-707 arm to restore. I've not tried a belt drive deck since I got back into the hobby. I love the look of the deck and the Grace arm is very elegant and beautifully made. Should be good when it's finished.

I have 2 turntables in my 'mancave'
One is a PL - A35 Pioneer which I use quite a bit

Its got the stock PC-50 cart and a new conical stylus.
The other is a HMV /ADC /BSR with a reweighted plastic plinth DD. Its ok ,and is a partner to the HMV amp, tuner and cassette I have .
It has a Shure M75-6S , and as I have 2 of these carts ,was wondering if it was worth getting a JICO stylus to go with one , to put on the Pioneer headshell??
I suppose it depends if the Hitachi amp and Mission speakers would do it justice?:)

Technics SL-1210 with Audio Technica AT-1005mk2 arm. Speedy Steve custom armboard, Vantage Audio bearing and Longdog Audio Stage 2 PSU. Cartridge is Denon DL-110 and headshell Sumiko. Occasionally I swap with AT440 in MG10. Wires are nowt fancy and the mat is cork /nitrile. Sounds pretty good to me.
Recently I've added some techniboots but the deck sits on a very solid wall shelf. I can jump up and down next to it and not skip a beat..

Sounds great now. The problem was the arm. Now I'm using the 774, the cart sings. Just didn't get on with the Tecnoarm.

After I failed to raise the funds to buy Struth's Thorens and on the advice of Walpurgis, I bought a Toshiba SR-370 and a mission 774 OG tonearm. Waiting for the cartridge to arrive (Shure M75EJ). Not a lot of money all in but I haven't "heard" it yet. Still in refurb state.

1210 - Probably the most heavily modified on AOS.
301 - Probably one of the best fettled on AOS.
Strengths - They take no prisoners.
Weakness - None.
I'm using a Garrard 401 too, mine has an SME 3009 fitted with a Yamamoto African black wood HS-1A headshell, a Shure M75ed cart with a Jico SAS stylus. I think it sounds great and runs very smooth.

87 i think,pre cirkus would have loved to have kept the mission 774 i used on my AR turntable but the tonearm cable just wouldn't dress correctly so i gave up and bought the ittok.

Very nice Steve. I love that F5 arm - solid bass, but still revealing and neutral - I think giving the SME V a good run for its money
I notice you did reply to the OP's question properly by noting that what you like about it is "Boogies like a little bugger", whereas I missed that request in my earlier post
So as for the PT / FXR**
I think they were made for each other - similar neutrality (almost dryness) , clarity, "airiness" detail, imaging and space around instruments. PT is good with the F5 too - a bit richer and more solid - a little detail and bass tunefulness lost with F5
Weaknesses - I'd say none, obviously, but then WTF am I modding it for? So maybe I need to confess some weakness:):)
The PT itself - its a bit of a jelly to use - needs confidence and a willingness to put up with a bit of bounce. For Macca (and Marco) speed stability is not currently the rock solid unflappable of the SL1210, although power supply improvements make it much better, and new motor, on sub-chassis, with vector should put it in the Saffire class, and that is every bit as sure-footed and solid as the Techie
Final "weakness" is bass "slam". F5 would achieve the balance, but at the expense of some detail and "depth". So thicker Achromat and solid non-resonant strata give an edge, and the sub-chassis rigidity mods should give it the "oomph" of an Anniversary without that (rather nice) slight colouration.
Suspension has to be strengthened to take the heavier platter, and I am probably going to have to do something about the lid or plinth shape to accommodate the extra height of the suspended elements - which is not as easy as just getting a deeper one made, if I still want it to hinge and fit a normal depth wall shelf.
And then - it will be perfect ;)
** I might add that the Dynavector, which has slightly the opposite emphasis (plenty of grunt and bass) is made for the arm & TT too, but I still think will be balanced with the mods planned. :cool:

My TD160 with it's recent plinth upgrade and Denon DL160. Strengths? Easy to work with for a novice like me, sounds terrific with the Denon and looks great in an understated kind of way. Not half as handsome as Jo's TD124 however!

Are you sure that's a DL-160? Looks like a DL-110 to me. The 160 is a dark purple colour. Both are a good match to the Thorens arm though.

Cart is 70's vintage Ortofon S 15-TE.

Hayden Boardman did a review on this TT in Hi-Fi World as one of the vintage gear reviews they cover. He liked it. A lot! I seem to recall he keeps one as a cartridge testing deck now. Incidentally, he had a Mission 774 on the review example I think. That has also had high praise in HFW.

Another vote for the Rock (please forgive the mobile phone pic) which is in my main rig. I tend to run her without the trough, with a Heed Orbit PSU.
This was a rescue job, with the bodywork in a terrible state. After a week's worth of tennis elbow-inducing effort with T-Cut and Autoglym she was reborn. In spite of all that IMHO as a "straight out of the box" deck she's the best I've spent time with, having no weak spot bottom, mid or top. Knocked the fully serviced PL71 that used previously off the perch. Aesthetically I prefer them without the outer plinth, there's something appealing about the slender appearance compared to many of today's monsterdecks.

Thanks Ben. It certainly is doing the business. A small change but a big step up I feel. Way more dynamic than previous set up. Makes me wonder how good these Thorens turntables can get. Anyway hopefully it'll halt the searching and dwindling bank account for a wee while!

Hi mate,
As you know I was dead set on a SME V, especially with the Michell, but a Bake Off over on the Wam comparing tonearms, including the V and the AN Three arm changed that.
The Audionote Three bettered the SME V...in the ways you spoke about the SME not being the most "musical" sounding arm, but a more precise "rifle bolt precision" type of sound.
The AN 3 arm though HAD those same qualities as the V apparently, it just had a little bit more musicality.
Given the price difference it changed my thinking on the SME.
Also,
After reading about the Audionote arm range, and the only difference being the internal wiring.. I got to thinking. :eyebrows:
Very impressed with Jony's rewire of my Technoarm, so seemed natural to rewire the Audionote arm too.

Here's a fuzzy warbler for your perusal!
A little later model (probably about 1975ish) than the one used in A Clockwork Orange and a Michell rather than a Transcriptors.
It's an export model I picked up in a sorry state for $40 when I was in the US. The original Pabst AC motor gave out a few years ago so it now has an Origin Live DC motor and PS. The acrylic mat, especially made for this turntable comes with a spindle extension and gives the record something more substantial to sit on.
I prefer the RB300 to the SME 3009 that these are often partnered with, although the best tonearm I had on it was a big Audiocraft AC-300 damped unipivot. Wish I still had that arm. Cartridge is a Garrott P77.
Strengths: Powerful, articulate bass - Weakness: Spring arm suspension is pretty much ineffective.

Well just fitted this. Been listening to some choons and was spinning a copy of Eliminator when it came into my head to stick this on.
Frankly am really surprised, wasn't expecting much, but this has really improved things, better detail and such, but the most noticeable thing is how the music starts and stops with better precision than it did before. Not something I thought I'd say about this arm and cart, but this wee wooden spacer has stepped it up a bit.
Not bad for about 20 quid delivered!

Hehehehe... Told ya! The improvements must come either from some form of improved mechanical termination with the headshell, and/or damping of vibration.
These little 'spacers' are so good, that from now on I intend now to use them on all of my headshells!:cool:

Currently playing with this little fella - a Vestax PDT-6000. Japan-only, apparently, and fitted as standard with an arm that bears an uncanny resemblance to that used on the Yamaha GT-750/1000 decks. I've paired it with a Yamaha MC-1X integrated cartridge/headshell I bought from the USA last month and the results are extremely impressive.

I'm not surprised that a DL-103 didn't work well in that arm... It doesn't like modern 'rigid' arms. Try it instead in your 3012, and the results will be rather different ;)

It is partially that yes. Definitely worth doing as it improves the overall performance, both the bass and midrange gain. Takes a few seconds to replace the original pivot and substitute the new.
Same as in signature - no mods or changes and no plans to. Only 400hrs on the clock over the last four years so not exactly overused.

Yeah, the mat is one of mine and Si also uses one of my clamps (though that is the Kuzma one in the picture). The wooden slab sits on a pneumatic suspension element (nothing to do with me) and that does work very well. When I eventually get round to it I intend to build a magnetically supported bearing for it too (it's on my 'to do' list).

Cos the idiot I bought it from shipped it with the lid attached to the hinges. That's a very nice turntable Richard. The headshell on the Decca arm looks unfamiliar to me, having owned a Decca International. Mine was an early version and had the plain, flat metal headshell. I've seen the later cheap plastic 'Connoisseur' type a few times, but not the one you have. Is it a standard item?

I'm neither making nor not making my designs. The truth is that my 'free time' is now extremely limited. The clamp that Marco now uses I made last year when I had significantly more time to myself and was experimenting quite widely in this field.
Yes, Mark's lightweight (magnetic) acrylic clamp is superb: a rather clever and very effective design.

It's a Connoisseur headshell, from Technical and General. I think it adds a metallic sound, though.

I plan to get another one, or at least one with a metal tube, and cut that off to mate with a wood or Delrin cartridge mounting plate. But at about £25 each, it will have to wait.

Nice thread of TT porn. Some lush decks of all vintages. Love the Funk and PT decks especially, for some reason.
Mine is a 1210 with a TimeStep PSU and a black-and-gold SME 309 (which just inspires such confidence in use, once I got used to the lack of a fingerlift). Cartridge is a Denon DL-304 and I'm also using a Funk Firm Achromat.
There is much more of course that I can do to the deck, but I quite like the fact that it still recognisably a Technics with the original platter and feet and all the lights working. I like to think it has the slam and drive and boogie of the original, but the SME/Denon combination brings a grace and crystalline purity at the same time. I may funk the thing to blazes one day, but right now it's bliss.

Sorry Marco, somehow missed this. Well there is not a huge amount to write really (I've just reviewed the length of my post and perhaps there is more to write than I anticipated ;)). I developed the idea for the clamp because I wanted one for myself that didn't suffer the negative issues of the usual clamp or record weight. To outline those negative issues I refer to:
Clamps: usually screw onto the centre spindle or use a split chuck arrangement to grip the centre spindle. In every case they grip the centre spindle. The problem with this is that the clamp is directly connected to the main bearing which is the primary source of noise outside of the motor. The clamp is also pressed against the record so any noise in the bearing (I already use an extremely quiet magnetically supported bearing) is directly coupled to the record surface and to the same surface the stylus rests on. The second problem is that it's difficult to regulate the pressure that the clamp exerts and it is very likely to vary from record to record and between uses.
Weights: the problem with weights is primarily - the weight of them :). Increasing the load on the bearing is not a good thing. In the worst case it will increase wear and in the best case it will increase noise. If you use a suspended design (as I do) you may well alter the resonant frequency of the suspension by increasing the suspended mass and it may even be rendered useless.
In addition to the above I wanted a system that could be removed or added without having to stop the platter - not for any specific reason other than it's convenient.
I realised that many turntables (not all of them but many) use tool steel for their bearing shafts and this is often (again, not always) continued to be the record spindle. I also realised that magnets are attracted to tool steel. So I constructed a Delrin puck that had a neodymium magnet within it and this proved to be most successful. The actual weight of the puck was low but it was attracted to the record spindle and applied far more force to the record than its weight alone - effectively it pulled itself toward the platter. I had also made it in such a way as although it used the record spindle to centre itself it made minimum contact and was further decoupled from it. So I went on to experiment further with slightly different designs and versions and one of the last ones I made is the one Marco has. It's made from acrylic primarily and is really very low in mass; however, it pulls down onto the record with significant force. In this version the record spindle length doesn't matter and the applied force is consistent. The way the magnets are positioned means that the magnetic field is in line with the spindle and the field radiated sideways is very low so there is no issue even with very sensitive moving coil cartridges.
This isn't a universal solution and won't work on all decks. in addition, It takes a bit of care to position (I actually use a version that is easier to locate but requires a spacer for thinner records). However, it does work very well and does address the problems I saw in existing designs. I've tried and made loads of alternatives and, for me, this is the best solution.

Would your clamp work on a Delrin platter, and does it have sufficient force to flatten upwardly dished LPs?
The material the platter is made of doesn't make any difference to the way the clamp works so yes, it would work on a Delrin platter.
It probably could be made with sufficient force to flatten a warped record but it is my view that applying that much force is undesirable because of the forces set up within the record. In addition, it was developed to work with my own design of record mat that is a minimum contact design (though it will work with other mats quite happily) and my mat will not flatten records so it hasn't been a design consideration. It does have more than sufficient pull to pull down the centre of a record that is slightly raised in the centre, but that's a slightly different matter.

I have been warned not to mention upgrades to technics on this forum as it will probably cost me a fortune, I do intend doing feet and power supply. I need to look into the arm as I believe the arm once retired is very good.

Well chaps, as you ask....the arm is just resting in the collet at the moment as the aluminium shim is too tight for the arm pillar. I'm machining the excess off the shim today with dremel precision! It is a heavy old beast though...
I'll let you know how it sounds today hopefully.
