Another of my hobbies is pistol shooting. Here are my two beauties.

One is my Umarex Beretta 92FS at 4.5mm calibre, 395fps, CO2 powered and the other is my Weihrauch HW45 Black Star at 4.5mm calibre, 600fps, spring powered.

Yes Grant, indeed it is .177 in old money. Hundreds of different types of round available with different weights and different crown profiles. Of course .177 has a lot more hitting power than .22 as it has the same power but a smaller diameter so as pressure equals force over area, it works out slightly better.

The only problem with the Black Star is that when it goes off it makes a helluva noise so is a tad obvious in the back garden range.

Indeed.. Remember making a hybrid from a 22 stalk and spring and 177 barrel. It was very powerful rifle. Handguns in my day were not much use. They have come on a long way, but you wouldnt want to be seen with one out in open for fear of an ARU assaulting you

What weight of pellet is this with? I think though you've maybe mixed up "hitting power" with force per square millimetre as a 177 does not have more striking energy than a 22 at the same velocity. At 600 fps with a typical 8 grain .177 pellet results in 6.4ft-lbs of striking energy. 600fps with a .22 14 grain pellet is 12ft-lbs striking energy which is the same thing as "hitting power" (ie a 22 pellet travelling at the same velocity has way more energy!), so for any given velocity, the larger pellet will have the larger striking force.

I'm a fellow shooter too by the way. In my case, it's full bore long range rifle shooting, although my FEO probably wouldn't approve of me posting pictures of my rifles on tut interweb! :stalks: (Be aware that some forces are clamping down on this).

Yes of course a .22 pellet has much higher striking force but will be at a considerably lower velocity due to the P=FA equation given the same force which of course they are restricted to.

I always use H&N Field Target pellets at 0.55gms as I have found these to perform best overall when target shooting. They have a domed crown so don't suffer from the same problems that flat crowned pellets suffer from.

Only used guns when i was young...probably wouldnt be allowed now...not sure it was then tbh. Prefer tunes now.

I had loads of air guns years ago.

The most powerful pistol you could get hands on back then (generally) was the Crosman 1377 pump up. Just plug the blow off port and you have 1/3 more power. Not legal though. Noisy bugger to pump up, going 'clack clack' all the time. A bit of rubber tape helped.

I preferred rifles really. Loved my BSF 55, Webley Mk.III and sidelever SIG Hammerli 401, which was by far the most accurate and my Benjamin 347 pump up, which was the most powerful.


Still got a seventies .22 BSA Meteor. Good all rounder, not too big but accurate and plenty of punch. Good for rat removal!

I've also got a fairly uncommon and rather dinky German .177 Gecado Model 22 from the fifties in lovely nick. Virtually identical to the Diana and Original model 22 rifles of the time. They shared the design.

Oh my word Geoff, I remember years ago having a .22 BSA Meteor. We used to cut the stock off, shape what was left into a grip, saw the barrel off down to about eight inches and fit a folding stock and red laser dot marker. Surprisingly, that bloody gun was quite powerful. How times change. My Weihrauch Black Star is currently the most powerful air pistol on sale in the UK but of course is still only half the power of a rifle.

I'm not familiar with the modern stuff at all. Back in the day CO2 propelled weapons were FAC only. I'm unlikely to buy anything these days, but might be tempted if I spot a vintage Crosman or Benjamin pistol though.

Another shooter here. My main thing is smallbore rifle but I occasionally dabble with 10m air pistol. I have an old Walther.

I did a fair bit of shooting at ranges many years ago using all sorts of firearms of many calibres. I'm a twice qualified military marksman, but have never been in the forces. Work that one out! ;)

550/600fps is an absolute doddle for a springer pistol but almost impossible for a CO2 pistol. The HW45 Black Star frequently goes through the chrony at almost 600fps. The Beretta just manages 400fps.

Here's a target from when I last did some shooting with proper weapons (done a little with air-rifles since) This was with a Beretta M9 pistol, target at the maximum distance.

The misses are from when I got bored and started shooting gangster style. They gave me 40 rounds! What was I supposed to do? ;)

Do you holiday abroad Shaun? Plenty of opportunities for some real firearm pistol shooting if you do, depending on where you go.

I had the pleasure of being invited to a 'last fling' session at a big indoor range with some decent handguns, the week before the ban came in for the UK. I got the use of a really nice Ruger 357 magnum revolver, .22 Beretta auto, 9mm Beretta auto, S&W 38 revolver and also my favourite, a Walther PPK 765, lovely little auto. The guns were all shipped off to a holiday home in Portugal, rather than being turned in for destruction.

Geoff, I used to shoot all kinds of handguns before the ban came in at a quarry local to me here in Lincolnshire. I think the best thing I ever shot was a S&W revolver with a four inch barrel. I have also shot numerous shotguns as well.

These days I cannot own a 'real' gun due to suffering from depression many years ago. I overcome this by owning the most powerful air pistol I can and shooting at paper targets to improve my aim. My other half Sue also shoots air pistols and frequently uses the Umarex Beretta.

I'd like to add if I may that I do not shoot rifles or shotguns as I prefer the more difficult task of shooting pistols, especially pistols with a bloody great 'kick' as the damn thing goes off. At some point in the future I am aiming (geddit) to buy Sue an Umarex Walther CP99 because it is very light and as Sue broke her back in 2010 but made a full recovery, I think she needs something weighing less than a kilo to be able to throw it around a bit easier.

Great fun and dirt cheap. Surprisingly well made considering. It's pretty accurate and more powerful than you'd expect. It's no toy, unlike the 20lb draw items.

In the 70's I had a CO2 pistol and rifle that were made by Crossman. They used a CO2 cylinder that looks similar to the soda stream CO2 refill. They could also use a longer and heavier pellet that Crossman used to make. Both of those guns were extremely powerful. But I had mine when I was in the tropics. I don't know if those high powered versions were ever sold in the UK. I guess not since they would have been over the maximum limit of power allowed under UK legislation.

Back in the good old days when such things weren't frowned upon, I owned a 9mm Beretta 92F, a .44 Ruger Super Blackhark, a .22 Erma PPK and a .455 Webley MkVI.
