These came attached to the Sony amp.

Are they merely socket caps of some sort?

Could be shorting plugs.

Sounds like a bad thing to me Ali, what's the purpose of such?

Shorting plugsare for shorting out unused inputs on an amp. Other possible is loading plugs for a phono stage

They were on the phono inputs Grant so I reckon you've nailed it. Sorry to be dense but what do they do?

They are. I've got some identical to those. They're supposed to reduce noise (from what I don't know). I've not heard any difference with them fitted, but they keep spare sockets nice and clean. :)

Supposedly crosstalk but why would you be listening to a input with nowt connected ive no idea

The idea is that RF interference can enter your amp through the unused RCA inputs. These shorting plugs connect the signal part of the plug to the ground, so any interference that is picked up is shunted to earth.

Cheers both. Sounds like I might as well shove them back in when I move the amp again.

Bit of amp juggling and in they are. Can't say as I'm blown away but every little helps I suppose.

Little bit of digging on go ogle indicates that these are Sony issue.

Except that these plugs are sold to cure a problem that rarely exists in the real world. (Yet another solution looking for a problem in hifi la la land).
