If you see me around, Adam, I'll gladly give you a hand

I too have got some rather heavey speakers , but i only have to get up to the 1st floor
Hopefully all will go well...

Not a problem at all. Look me out. Macca might help too, if he's able, being just a little chap! ;)

Ah no, soz... I'll be there first thing on Sunday morning, as soon as the doors open. I only engaged in the Sat night 'sleepover' when I was exhibiting. However, when I pop in to hear your system, we can arrange to hook up at the end of the day, and I'll gladly give you a hand getting all your stuff from the room back into your car or van - that is as long as you're ready to pack up sharpish, once it's all over :)

Well. the Wigwam's Scalford Show happened yesterday, and it was a fab thing.
Attended by AOSers as well as Wammers, of course, and by those with dual membership as well. :)
Here is an ever-growing folder of pics taken at the Show.

The show had its usual amazingly positive vibe.
The Park & Ride scheme went off without a hitch as far as I could ascertain.
The 2 main charity schemes raised £2,900 for the mental health charity Mind, which was the Show's designated charity, and over £1,700 for Cancer Research UK. Over £4,600 total. I think that's great. :)
A very wide choice of systems. Horns were on the up (as it were) with some fairly astonishing configurations.
Ultimate gold-plated bling in the SME arm and tt demmed by James / Jampal. You'd have hated it, Marco. :eyebrows:
I had a shared dem room, so didn't get out much, but from a quick and fairly arbitrary whisk around some rooms, my own fave was a system with refurbed (and much updated) Quad II amps and matching pre - JBL L40 speakers were sounding wonderfully fine at the delivery end. I can't recall the source.
Shame you weren't there, Marco - I did look out for you!

One of my favourites also...as for the source, that was rather intriguing.
Thorens TD 160 Super, with a Philips ceramic cartridge.
Audioflyer of this parish was the man in charge and it all sounded rather wonderful.

I'll post some more details and photos of my set-up.
I was in room 209 and thank you to all who pop in and said hello.
Sadly the TD160 Super with RB300 did not make it due to a last miniute broken cartidge lead.
So the Phonosophie No3 with Thorens TP90 arm was use instead.
The Philips (GP390) low output ceramic cartridge was last made in 1968 for me it the finest cartridge I've ever heard. It output is only 1mV and was design to work in a standard 47K MM riaa stage.
Riaa preamp was a High Octane Riaa phonostage (DIYAudio)
Quad II's with regulated power supplies.
Modified Quad 22 preamp.
1987 JBL L40 speakers restored a week and a half before the show!
Speaker stands built a week before the show.
And to top it all a £6.00 optical 24 bit 96k dac used with my Marantz cd63 KI II.
Sharif
Hi Sharif,
Most interesting...
First of all, where did you buy the cartridge from, and secondly, isn't there a lack of gain with the output being so low?
Normal output from an MM cartridge is around 4-5mV, which for me is about right. I couldn't imagine using something that only kicks out fraction of that, without having to severely crank up the volume control, thus introducing other issues that would be less than ideal, namely the partnering preamp 'running out of steam', as it were (on low-level recordings), or is there some way of boosting things to compensate?
Marco.

Hi Marco.
The Philips GP390 cartridge was from Musonic (UK) Limited.
The 1mV output was to some German Din standard used by Philips at the time I think under normal riaa standard it is 5mV.
Sharif.
Thanks for that. I see that Musonic no longer sell the cartridge in question.
So how do you address the gain situation?
I'm sure you'll agree, that dropping from 5mV to 1mV is rather significant. I'm not sure that's something I could live with. It's a different thing with low-output MCs, because one would always ensure that the partnering phono stage (and/or head amp, SUT) had the required [often adjustable] gain to cope, but most MM stages have fixed gain.
Marco.

No, it's 5mV output, Marco.

It wasn't James' own arm/tt - just a fairly fancy one-off device on loan for the Show.

I was running a dem room yesterday, so I scooted round quick trying to hear as much as I could in 45 minutes! :)
Ah righto... That's the problem with big shows like that. There's never enough time to see everything properly in the one day. I think they should look at holding it over a Saturday and Sunday - would be much more relaxing for everyone then :)

Well, a lot of the exhibitors stay at the hotel over the weekend, they have plenty of time to mooch around the show before it starts.
I prefer not to stay away from home overnight, so I do the exhibitor thing all in one hectic day, which isn't ideal in some ways.
Yeah, but I'm also talking about visitors... I don't think I've been to one Scalford show where I've managed to visit every single room!
IMO, it takes a day just to get used to the layout and find all the rooms tucked away in the more obscure areas of the hotel, plus you always end up staying longer in rooms you like and/or have systems demonstrated in them by people you know, so at the end of the day you end up chasing your tail trying to find those you've missed...
As a visitor, I'd gladly stay over for the weekend, if it meant that I could split things over the Saturday and Sunday (doing half the rooms of the show each day), so that the whole experience was more relaxed. Just a thought!
Oh, and I presume that if you're a hotel guest, you're entitled to a space in the car park? ;)

As an exhibitor, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who came.
We very much enjoy doing it, the effort is worthwhile, but it equally needs you lot to turn up too.
Hope you all found something of interest. :-)
As a visitor I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who organised the Wam show (an excellent job by all) and particularly to those who went to the huge amount of effort required to bring their gear and demonstrate it on the day - thank you one and all. This years show was a particular high point I think and I (also my friends who joined me in attending) enjoyed it immensely - can't wait for the next one :).

Yes, we also noted how well that system gelled - it did work very well.

Marco.
They did. There was a huge thread on it a few years ago.
Major resistance came from the exhibitors as I remember it.
Probably too tight to pay any more for their rooms ;)
Marco.
I always go over on the Saturday and visit the show Sat evening for the unofficial pre-show shenanigans :) - a good time to meet up with old friends and hear some tunes in a relaxed, less busy, atmosphere. So, for me, it is a two day show. However, I can certainly see why the majority of people showing don't want to make it a two day show.

I used to do that when I exhibited. So do you pay for a room in the hotel on the Saturday?
However, I can certainly see why the majority of people showing don't want to make it a two day show.
Apart from cost, why not? I can think of significant advantages. Indeed, when I exhibited (on three occasions), if it had been a two-day show, I'd have much preferred it :)
Marco.

A 2-day event would only really be worthwhile if the majority of visitors would come for both days - and, having see the folk who come into my dem room, I honestly can't see much chance of that happening. Most are day trippers, imo, not weekenders.
And as a regular exhibitor, I wouldn't be prepared to do a 2-dayer. I doubt I'm alone in that.
I think it is fine and hugely successful as it is.
-- Maybe extend the opening hours by an hour each end?

But surely you'd get different folk on both the Saturday and Sunday? One day might suit some folk more than others, which is one of the benefits I see of a 2-day show, and so may actually attract MORE punters for that reason. No-one is saying that you'd have to attend the show on both days.
I'm only tossing some ideas 'into the ring', as it were. It's not a criticism of how things are at the moment.
One other observation: it's great that the P&R scheme went well. However, I've been reading on pfm folk saying that the show was quieter this year than usual. Do you think that could've been because some people were deterred from attending because of the new parking arrangements?
Marco.
The problem with a two day show is one of logistics. I too have 'shown' at this show and the options are to turn up super early on Sunday and set it all up in a big rush or go down on Saturday and set it up in the evening in a more relaxed way. Most now choose to go down on Sat. If it were a two day show people would have to rush down super early on a Sat or somehow get down on a Friday - remember that most of those showing have proper day jobs and often travel a blooming long way to show!
I have stayed at the hotel in the past but this year all the rooms were reserved for those showing so we stayed at another hotel not far away and travelled by taxi back and forth.
jandl100
21-03-2016, 20:45
I think I've lost the plot  - I thought your idea of a 2-dayer would allow each person to see the whole show as there wasn't enough time to do that properly in 1 day?
No point at all, imo. having a 2-day event otherwise.
Yes, but the whole point is it would provide the option:
A) For visitors who want to spread the show over two days, to ensure that they get to see everything that they want and not miss anything.
B) Allow visitors who would prefer to go either on the Saturday or Sunday to have that option. The fact is, by holding the show rigidly for one day, on a Sunday, you're preventing folks going who on a Sunday may have other things to do (e.g. family stuff), and vice versa for those on a Saturday. Therefore, it makes sense to attract both.
Get it now? :)

No, it sounds impractical to me.
Try it out with the AOS Show.
A two day show just isn't a practical proposition for amateur demonstrators (for the reasons I've outlined above) no matter how convenient it would be for those attending.
If numbers were down it certainly wasn't by much as it was still very busy.
At present this is the biggest show in the UK and appears to be going from strength to strength. It should be on the 'must go to' list of all those keen on audio in my opinion. As an example, this year I listened to a number of ultra high end turntables through the same system. One of those decks was the famous SpJ La Luce; I've only seen one in the flesh twice and never heard one before. This one had a prototype arm by the designer - the only one ever made - I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

It is just a shame some of people involved are, to my mind, just seriously unpleasant. The amount of downright unpleasantness has been inflicted on an awful lot of people beggar's belief. Including some of the people that go.

Yes, I do appreciate that. I guess it just depends on your personal circumstances.
In my situation, if I were an exhibitor, since the show happens at a predetermined time each year, I'd arrange well in advance to be off that weekend, and book a room at the hotel for the Friday and Saturday night (leaving after the show on the Sunday), and use the Friday evening to set-up and do all the usual stuff.
That would also allow exhibitors sharing a room with someone else to take turns to see the rest of the show, if they had an extra day to allow for that. For me, it would be much more relaxing (and potentially more rewarding) that way for most exhibitors and visitors.
I have stayed at the hotel in the past but this year all the rooms were reserved for those showing so we stayed at another hotel not far away and travelled by taxi back and forth.
Ah, I was wondering how you did it. Why use the P&R bus then, as you indicated you were going to do? You could've just gotten a taxi straight to the hotel, and arranged for one to pick you up afterwards? :)
Marco.
No, it sounds impractical to me.
Try it out with the AOS Show.
I don't see how it's at all impractical. Choice for visitors is good! Yes, if or when we do one, it would be a 2-day event :)

I completely agree. For me, it and Cranage Hall are the only UK shows worth going to, on a number of levels. Hence why we'll always support the Scalford show and encourage our members to attend. However, nothing's perfect and improvements can always be made, hence why I've floated some ideas in that respect.
Marco.
I didn't use the bus but not because of any anti-bus issues. It's just that it was more convenient to pre-book taxis - we had done it before and so just did the same again (it's not far and the taxi is only £6:00).
That's cool. I wasn't insinuating that you had any "anti-bus issues", but I remember you saying something along the lines of it being a novelty and something you were looking forward to, as you hadn't been on a bus in years, so wondered what had changed that plan :)
Marco.

You could set up on the friday if you where in a syndicate room, not if you where in a bedroom, unless you slept on a camp bed, or the floor. Most exhibitors sleep in the room the are exhibiting in. If it was a two day show the hotel would have to remove the beds saturday morning, put them back saturday night, and repeat the performance for sunday. I have exhibited at a few shows, and two days would rule it out for me, on a cost, and willingness basis.
The W lothian show is better.... the phonebox was packed

Well, in all honesty, what changed the plan was that I found out my mate Andrew had already pre-booked all the taxis so I didn't need to catch a bus after all. One of the bus departure points was very close to where I stayed though so I could have done it easily enough :).

Good points, Colin, and ones I hadn't considered. I completely appreciate where you're coming from, but if it came to it (as an exhibitor) it wouldn't bother me taking a sleeping bag, if it helped facilitate things. You have to come and go a bit.
One of the biggest reasons for me, for championing a 2-day show, is the sheer amount of people attending who NEVER get to see every room, and always miss something - often something that they later regret not seeing, and that's down to a simple lack of TIME.
Therefore, if folk had more time to visit all the rooms and ensure that they didn't miss anything, wouldn't that be useful? As ever, just as there are with the current one-day show, compromises of some description are inevitable. Everyone just needs to agree on what those compromises are :)
Marco.
It is just a shame some of people involved are, to my mind, just seriously unpleasant. The amount of downright unpleasantness has been inflicted on an awful lot of people beggar's belief. Including some of the people that go.
Although I've been a member of the Wam for a long time I haven't been all that active and I'm afraid I don't know who those unpleasant people involved, that you refer to, are. All the people running the rooms that I spoke to were very pleasant indeed and went out of their way to play visitors musical choices and explain the systems being demonstrated.
Inevitably there is the occasional tosser who visits these events but they are very much in the minority and of little consequence.
Indeed, I've never encountered any issues at Scalford, in terms of unpleasantness - indeed the complete opposite! In that respect, everyone is on their best behaviour - even the, shall we say, more 'vociferous' of the Wam regulars ;)
Marco.
There's a mass of problems on the forum with personal direct insults and fairly extreme baiting etc etc and there always has been. TBH though it has been getting better or so it would appear, but then I visit to peruse less and less. But it is still there. I spoke to the new owner at the last Whittlebury and he was/is massively aware of it.

Yeah, the Cranage show is also a great event and my favourite of the commercial shows - looking forward to visiting it again this year - strongly recommended :).

The GP390 has a 5mV output at 5cm/s at standard velocity sorry for the confusion I created.

I had hope to take my Thorens TD160 Super with a RB300 but when installing the cartridge the lead broken off as it enter the arm. Instead I had to use my Phonosophie No3 with a Thorens TP90 arm, fitted with the Philips GP390 ceramic cartridge,
The High Octane Riaa Phonostage (DIY audio) was a diy build using a new take on the standard multi feedback three transistor designs from the 60 & 70's it features an improve output buffer with a fet constant current source and a shut regulated supply.
My Quad II's main amplifier stage has not be change, in 1985 I replace the GZ32 with a regulated supply this transformed the sound without any downside. My regulator design will also work with a GZ34 as the HT capacitor was a type that limited the in rush current as used in may old valve/transistor CRT tv's.
With regards to my Quad 22 this was redesign as a line only stage by removing about a metre of wire from the signal path. The Quad ECC83's circuit was retained and a mosfet follower added powered by a separate PSU.
Both of the JBL L40 speakers were in a bad state.

Nice job on the JBL L40 speakers. They are exceptional. I remember these having excellent reviews. A friend had a pair and I thought they sounded very fine.

Just one other thing I've forgot to mention did anybody here get to listen to my £6 optical input DAC?
Everybody who heard it had commented how good it sounded connected to my Mrantz cd63 KI II cd player.

In the late 70's several of my friends had these and I always wanted a pair.
This pair were rescued by me I had to travel to Leeds as they were destined for the skip the following day.

Smart move. They are rare now and one of JBLs best compact speakers. I'm generally a Tannoy fan, but the L40 is certainly a speaker I'd like to use on my system.
Just a thought. The last minor 'ripples' remaining in the doped fabric tweeter domes may come out if you use a hairdryer on lowish settings to warm the diaphragm up as you 'massage' them back into shape.

Amazing work on the JBLs, Sharif. They, and the whole system, sounded fantastic at Scalford on Sunday. Of those systems that I heard (not that many, due to time constraints) it was my vote for Best Sound at Show.

Hey - I had no idea that was you taking the pic of me collapsed against the wall! .... you should have introduced yourself, Steve. :)
Superb job on the JBL's and a great looking system. Nice to know these speakers can be bought back from beyond the grave.
