why is it if i put concrete paving slabs under my speaker stands it improves the bass but destroys the mid and highs?
If thereare no spikes i guess it will alter the tuning of the cabs somewhat. Higher freq are shorter so that may havea bearing...my floorsare concrete although i have double thinck carpeting between and cannot say ive had any probs

ive got ditton 66's arriving soon so will have to think of something for them to stand on.
your only mass loading the floor ....and raising the speakers the thickness of the slab . Your better trying isolating the speaker from the floor/or stand with a layer of complaint material...say squidgy packing foam..aurelex platfoam[http://www.auralex.com/product/platfoam/]or even bubblewrap. The downside is the speakers will move when touched ..but there are a great number of positive if it works for you. I've never thought spikes work very well ..but certainly better than just resting the stands on the floor ! But since finding that the feet supplied with my speakers made them sound dire , I tried cones ...worse ..hardwood round door knobs ...better Auralex mopads brilliant and outperforming all isoacoustics http://isoacoustics.com/isol8r155.php

It can't alter cabinet tuning by placing stands on slabs, it can alter resonance, or rather resonant behaviour and damping which is possible what you're hearing. Just use them however they sound best. Not all speakers will respond in the same way. Depends entirely on the speaker and resonances at work.
