Hi all!

I'm Michiel from Hilversum, The Netherlands. Glad to be joining your wonderful forum :)

I mainly listen to Baroque and Classical music (especially Bach, Telemann, Handel and Beethoven) and Jazz (Oscar Peterson, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, etc..)

Also, I'm kind of an analog fanatic. Maybe once in a year I'll listen to a CD, but otherwise it's vinyl and sometimes good old compact cassette :eyebrows: My collection has about 400 LPs, 50 cassettes, 30 CDs and a few SACDs

I got a lot of info from this forum concerning externalizing the transformer and psu of my SL-1210. Will be sharing my own experiences soon!

Vinyl playing is very popular here and you've definitely come to the right place to discuss your SL-1210.

You may have seen the Techiepedia sub-forum in the Analogue Arts section. Just start a thread there and ask any Techie questions you may have or join in the chat on existing threads.

When I was a kid (about 7 or 8 years old) we had a Radiogram (a highly prized and highly polished piece of furniture) made by HMV with a heavy hinged lid with a plaque inside the lid of the HMV dog (Nipper - good pub quiz question answer :) ) This contraption housed a turntable and radio. The radio was a MW & LW jobbie with a dial and cursor (marker) that went up and down the wavelengths as you turned it. It had these amazing names written on the radio stations and Hilversum was one of them. I used to twiddle the knob just to hear the strange noises that you could make as you crossed the wavelengths of different transmitters (bit like electronic birds). The turntable had a stacking system for 45's so you could play about 6 in a row. My funniest memory is getting my dad to listen to my latest purchase, The Isley Brothers - Behind a Painted Smile - a bit too "way out" for him:D

About the Hilversum radiostation mentioned by Rob: that could be very well true! In the past all Dutch television and radio stations were situated in Hilversum. Most of them still are, however some have moved to Amsterdam. Those old HMV Radiogram machines are indeed quite huge and hefty. In the Netherlands Philips made similar devices, which were also very expensive. Although very old-fashioned looking (some call it retro) and the sound quality may not be very high-end, most of them are still working after 40-50 years. To me, that says something about the quality of the equipment made in those days. Even the lower-end devices.
