Well, I don't know if any of you on here is trying this - but 10 days into it I certainly don't feel any better :( Now I know I was under the influence when my best mate suggested we do this BUT from one who likes a snifter or two in the evening I'm missing it but luckily not craving it
I've been surfing the tinternet and according to the drinkaware self assessment I'm not dependant - I'm an abuser!!
Really glad that our government has decided to lower the recommended limits yet again and want the calories shown on all alcohol!! It's a shame that my normal shot of malt is now probably 1/2 my weekly limit   Good job I'm not trying to stop smoking at the same time

Maybe the general malaise is down to a lack of alcohol!!!! I was in the garage earlier today and was wondering what my 5 litres of isopropyl would taste like with a drop of lime in!!:eek:

Govt limits are bloody nonsense ... remember my doc asking me if I had more than 21 units a day once(i thought he said day)... I said often... and meant it.... trouble was he was talking weekly and I was talking daily. when i said that he never asked me again... Im probably down as an alkie, but I can stop and do without an probs, bar I dont want to.:D
Life's got to be worth living for me to live it!!

If you drink mineral water or hard water like you get in Derbyshire then you dont need to worry... Us Scots have soft water and thats our problem.. I drink Bottled English water to protect my liver etc.

I'm drinking right now.

Only because I don't have to go to work tomorrow and it's a shame to waste the opportunity.

There's only half a bottle of the 2001 claret left, and that's got my name on it. Soon we'll have to risk the 2007.

The new guidelines are a Government policy backed by research and science, funny how flippant some people are with their health. We are learning all the time about what's good for our bodies.

As for giving up for January? Nope, but I do drink a lot less than I used to and I do feel a lot better for it :)

I like and old quote, Dean Martin I think? "I feel sorry for the people who don't drink, because when they wake up in the morning, that's the best they are going to feel all day!"

Cheers 🍻

LOL! Yes, 9 days in. Helped by having a lingering cold, this Saturday was easier than I thought though and we went out for dinner! I try(!) to never touch drink if I have work the following day though so that helps... a bit.

I doubt it is. I think it is modern puritans attempting to impose their warped values on the rest of us. How much I choose to drink is none of the Government's business and the fact that I am paying the tab for them to produce this crap really pisses me off.

And before anyone starts on the 'burden to the NHS' rubbish I pay for that as well and frankly they would be better off putting their energies into running it efficiently rather than preaching. Of course that would be difficult so this is a lot easier and makes them feel like important and worthwhile people.

I am doing it.

It is crap.

Hey ho. Just to see if I can still do it really (I used to be in the wine trade and we would try and usually fail miserably)

Not sure i see the point. Give up for a month then blitz on the stuff when its over, and do yourself more harm:lol: I know I can stop when and if I want to so i'm fine with that...I just rarely want to.

Macca

Grant, I agree. But I think if someone is genuinely concerned that they couldn't do it then they should give it a go, at least they will find out how dependant they are.

Having said that if you can go week without a drink it is unlikely you have a problem. A month just seems like self-flagellation.

I am not sure what game the govt are playing at. They have revised the safe alcohol limit so that you are now seen to be drinking too much if you do 21 units a week. A standard glass (pub measure) of wine or a pint of beer was 1 unit. Now they say that because the alcohol strength of beers has generally risen this has been increased to 2 units for a standard strength pint of beer and 2.3 units for a standard glass of wine. The strength of wine has never changed! neither has standard strength beer.

So they deem that if you drink what you had been allowed to drink you run the risk of health problems and this is very very bad:eek:. So you live like a monk, work far longer to get your pension and when you have preserved yourself by cutting your drinking and reach say 80 and go silly, if you own your own property and have in excess of £27,000 in savings which would include equity in your home, you will then have to sell it to be housed in an institution (errr a care home) and abused by those you are paying thousands a year for the privilege.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/insurance/longtermcare/11441163/Why-you-WILL-have-to-sell-your-home-to-pay-for-care.html

This is the only reason the govt don't want you to die young, otherwise they couldn't give a shit. Cheers:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::c ool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::coo l::cool:

That is exactly the point of the exercise, to PROVE non dependence.

I know I could run a sub 10 second 100m, but I just don't want to.:ner:

Dry January? Stuff that - alcohol is the only thing that gets me through the grey, miserable, depressing and dreary first 31 days of each year!

Thanks. Mine is really boring:

Based on what you have answered today, there is some risk of alcohol affecting your health. Read more about the effects of alcohol below, and get advice if you would like to cut down

I have cut down last 6 months as got a lot on at work and I can't risk feeling sluggish in the mornings. Not sure why I should need 'advice' to help me make that decision though.

God forbid that one might want to enjoy one's self.
I had to have a Colonoscopy a couple of months ago because of a change in bowel habits and I had numerous blood tests, one of which checked my Liver function, which I was told was fine. After some tests a few years ago I was told the same. I am not a heavy, but I am a regular drinker and enjoy a glass of wine or two with my meal. They say that it is better to drink alcohol with food. Some say that they like to cook with wine....and some even use it in the recipe:lol:

I'm a great believer in the maxim "Moderation in everything" and that includes moderation itself.

I frequently have a couple glasses of wine with my meal and often a slug of single malt as a nightcap. Have done so for years and I'm not about to change.

The rest is probably doing me some good :) following my semi retirement I can quite easily "chew" my way through 2 litres of JD a week just by having a couple each night   I haven't really missed it yet but still another 20 days to go :( :(

Me neither - and I have no major health problems. Life is for living and enjoying yourself, in moderation ;)
