Great Ali. I have a cheap little sabre usb DAC with little 8v linear PSU which sounds good.

Thinking about it, as Im not bringing my 300B I'll drag my Young Dac and linear psu along.
Cool with that Rich?

No problem Gordon. The reason I thought it might have belonged to a lady was Steve's daughter wearing a grey tracksuit when she came to drive him home. There's nothing particularly feminine about it though;)

Give me a call if you're passing to pick it up.

We've identified the owner of the records now we just need to find who owns the toolkit and cables.

Another fantastic day chaps and much kudos to Steve ( and anyone else who helped ) for all his efforts in organising NEBO7 . I certainly had a great day . It was good to see all me Geordie friends again too . Canny lads one and all :D
There was so much equipment to hear on the day and some of it was top class . After much thought I have to say that the R2R also gets my top award for the day . However , both turntables were also excellent and I have to say that some of the amps present made me wish that I owned them. I had my eyes opened to some equipment which I hadn't heard before and some of the music played was 'toe-tappingly' good:carrot:
The venue was eminently suitable for this kind of thing IMO and I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the day.
Well done again Steve and roll on NEBO 8 .

Definately is Steve,I mean ,when the machine was going ,I was watching it closely and one spool was going faster than the other BUT the clever bit was the sound out of both speakers was at the same speed i.e one should have been faster/slower than the other surely.then they changed round and still they were at the same speed:scratch: [is this what they call wow and flutter]The man must be a genius to do that;)Joking apart, that Studer and Steve's px25 system [inc speakers] are a privelege to listen to.Roll on NEBO 8 ps thanks to Rich for reuniting me with my toolbox - cheers

So, the mystery toolbox has been returned to its owner and I've acquired some valves for tube rolling in the Croft too.

Here's some of my phone pics from another excellent NEBO meet, the best yet perhaps? Great to meet up with the NEBO gang again and meet some new people in the process.

This first pic was an early set up we enjoyed, featuring my modified Techie with Denon DL-110, Croft Micro Basic preamp/phono stage and Rega RS5 speakers. We initially enjoyed this setup with the mini-t amp however we later returned to it and put in the mystery wooden box power amp brought by Mad Moon & Vince and some DH Labs power conditioning and substantial mains cables which had this set up really singing. I was really pleased with how the RS5 performed on the day and they worked well in the room which was much larger than where they usually live. On this setup we enjoyed tracks from Blood Sweat and Tears, Seasick Steve, The Kinks, The Meters and Grateful Dead.

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0029.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0029.jpg.html)

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0027.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0027.jpg.html)

Next was into the big boys room to enjoy some of Steve Shiels fabulous open baffles and PX25 amps, the scale of these never ceases to amaze me. Its a cliche to talk about speakers disappearing in the room but this is the best way I can describe this set up. Large and effortless sound.

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0031.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0031.jpg.html)

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0032.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0032.jpg.html)

Also in this pic is one of Colin Topps new Edingdale Mk2 speakers, which we'd go on to enjoy with the R2R later.

Below, Nick's 300b amp, a very easy listen indeed.

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0033.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0033.jpg.html)

An interesting set up below with Gordon's valve amp, Ken's Stello CD Transport, Dacmagic, Project Preamp and some diminutive Q acoustics standmount speakers. I fear these were a bit lost in the room but in your average lounge could well be excellent as people say. I felt they never really reached their potential here though.

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0040.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0040.jpg.html)

A bit of deck porn showing Nick's Technics which was used with a combination of the Edingdale speakers and the open baffles for a mid afternoon vinyl session which culminated in the playing of the David Bowie/David Gilmour live performance of Arnold Layne. This was a highlight and this rocked so well I punched the air with a metal salute at one point!

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0041.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0041.jpg.html)

Back into the 'experimental room' for a blast of Martin's Akai speakers and Reiver Acoustic's Jennas with a variety of valve amps and sources including the CD transport, a battery powered Beresford Bushmaster DAC, Jensen power amp??, OPPO DAC/Head amp? and even my Chromecast Audio at one point. At this point the cider was starting to work its magic and the details become a bit blurry.:scratch:

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0042.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0042.jpg.html)

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0044.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0044.jpg.html)

Then back into the big boys room for an extended session with Alan's Studer R2R, Voyager Amps and Avondale based preamp with Colin's Edingdales, this was where they really came to life for me as we enjoyed some Santana, Hendrix, Peter Green and finally a live recording of Pink Floyd's Echoes from 1974. What a treat! This whole set up rocked! Cider really kicking in now, we're no longer noticing the kit and feeling the music... Alan's spinning reels are always a NEBO highlight for me! If there was a prize then this system would have took it by a country mile.

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0047.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0047.jpg.html)

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0048.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0048.jpg.html)

Getting even more oiled now, we paired up Steve's Krell integrated with my Rega's to very good effect. A nice match and surprised me how smooth this combo sounded. Great amp Steve.

http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s468/richbritton/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0051.jpg (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/richbritton/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0051.jpg.html)

After that I forgot to take any more pics but we rounded off the night with some of Mick's vintage valve gear, the Radford and a vintage EL84 receiver which saw us out for a properly eclectic vinyl session featuring some suitably 'specialist' selections. Some early Pink Floyd Interstellar Overdrive, Gary Numan, Big Band swing music, a little bit of gentleman Jim Reeves :eyebrows:

So all in all another fab day, thanks to Steve for organising and all the attendees who make it what it is. Great craic, great music, great kit. Thats what its all about.

Kens system was simple but very effective :eyebrows: improving with the substitution of Preamps from marco & Ali
Richys system added more body & Sole with the RS5 speakers and a very nice 1210:eyebrows:, that little T amp putting in yet another unbelievable performance.
I agree about Steve’s P25 amp and open baffle speakers putting in an effortless and elegant performance, Nick's superb 300b amplifier also made these speakers really sing IMO with his own Techy 1210 turntable, particularly with Marcos very nicely set up denon 103, some wonderful Vinyl played here an absolute treat.
Maca's Akai speakers did sound fab but i agree would have benefited with a little separation from that thick carpet
Colin’s Edingdales sounded great but I think could benefit with some more work on the Xover IMO, compared to my own Tannoy 6.4 they have a little muddle in the mid / bass IMO.

I wish I could have stayed later as I wanted to listen to Steve’s Krell amp and Micks wonderful Radford but it was my 59th Birthday on Saturday and SWMBO had booked a meal for us down in York so I had to make a mad dash only just arriving on time.

A very good take on the day Alan...I agree whole heartedly with your comments..The 1210 with the Longdog Audio stage..and not being a fan of tubes..but must confess that 300b made the open baffles sing... and the Denon 103..with the mods the way Marco mounted it stole the show for me...however..I didn't really have a listen to the lovely Studer r2r...I think the MKll Eddies strangled the life out of the music...they do look stunning mind you but I think Colin has quite a bit of a journey to go with them yet, to give them any sort of wow factor...

Thanks to Steve, a good job done,
I really enjoyed the day, glad my diy stuff went down well, its always a relief if it actually works on the day, so for it to sound good in some rather good company is a bonus

It was also nice to see and chat with what i consider many friends now, good chat and exchange of info, its all about learning.

Have to agree with Ken's sentiments - and Steve, an extra thanks for indulging me and bringing the Q Acoustic 3020s so I could hook them up to the Dynaco....they sounded like a good match to me....the 9Bach track sounded smooth and spacious but also had some real punch considering the size of the speaker. I just saw 9Bach at the Sage - very impressive band live, even though the folkies that turned up didn't quite seem to know what to make of them.

Mick, great to talk 50/60s amps... I learned a lot about the Radford. Whose pre-amp were we using, by the way? - silver with a circular blue volume indicator - sounded really nice.

A really good day which always goes by way too fast.

Sorry for being late to this thread, guys. Had a friend staying with me (Snapper), whom you met on Saturday, so not much time to post.

Thanks again to Steve for organising another superb NEBO event, at what I have to say was an excellent venue. The parking facilities were more than adequate, the place itself was clean and tidy, and the staff very friendly and helpful. The home-cooked food was very good, as were the local ales, so if I were Steve I wouldn't hesitate to use the same venue for the next NEBO - nice one!

It was also great meeting all the Geordie lads again, along with the Scottish mafia and everyone else, as the camaraderie and banter is always great, and this occasion was no exception. The love of music, great sounds and complete lack of 'competitiveness'/oneupmanship or showing off (not always the case at these types of events) is shared by everyone, and is what makes NEBO so special and different from the norm. The focus is always on having a laugh and a good time, which is precisely what it always should be about.

Highlights for me, and there were many, were Steve Shiels superb DIY OBs, which to my ears get better every year, as Steve continues to experiment and judiciously apply modifications to their design, which seem to be paying off handsomely. As such, his current designs are the culmination of many years of development - and you can hear the results, as they produced truly spell-binding sounds with all types of music, allowing one quite incredible insight into the most complex of recordings. They can rock too, and produce realistic depth and scale, providing the requisite 'grin factor' with appropriate beat-driven music!

His amps were once again excellent, although I marginally preferred Nick's integrated 300B, driving Steve's OBs, as these had a little more 'balls' - not that Steve's amps lacked any, as his OBs are hugely efficient, but Nick's amp provided a bit more 'grunt' and low-end weight, which for me produced a rather beguiling combination of resolution, musical insight and the ability to almost 'disappear' from the room, allowing music to fully showcase itself as a convincing entity. Therefore, well done to Steve (and Nick) for reaping the rewards of continuing to push the sonic envelope with their respective amplifier and speaker designs.

Nick also brought with him an MCRU-modified Technics SL-1210, which amongst other items, carried an Ortofon arm similar to the RS-212D one I use. The only problem was, upon inspection, there appeared to be nowhere to adjust the height of the arm, as despite both Nick and I looking, neither of us could see where to put an Allen key, in order to make any necessary adjustments - and some were indeed necessary, as the set-up was all over the place!

Firstly, the T/T wasn't properly level, as I said the arm height was out, as was azimuth, and above all the headshell supplied, with the heavyweight counterbalance, was too light in order to allow applying of the correct VTF. Consequently, when Nick fitted the supplied Hana MC cartridge, the sound was, shall we say, not the best (!) most of which was really beyond his control, as he neither had a replacement (heavier) headshell to hand or the ability to adjust the arm height. A 50p piece was duly stuck onto the headshell, as a makeshift solution to the balancing issue, but what we know to be a superb performing cartridge (the Hana) produced a hard and distorted sound, simply because the set-up was far from optimal.

However, underneath all that, I could hear a pretty nice sound (which although being strangled) was trying to get out, which I largely attributed to the T/T itself, so I offered to see if I could help. Fortunately, I'd brought a Denon DL-103 cartridge along with me, already fitted (and aligned, via Stevenson geometry) into an Audio Technica MG-10 magnesium headshell, bolstered by both a Mpingo wooden spacer and Isokinetik graphite stabiliser, which combine to increase mass and add some effective damping, see here:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/921/vR4JQA.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/plvR4JQAj)

I fitted the Denon to the AT arm, took my time to apply the optimal VTF of 2.6g (as I'd brought my Clearaudio digital stylus gauge with me) and adjusted the azimuth correctly with a small headshell bubble, and by complete luck, the arm height was pretty much spot on. I then played the same music we'd just been listening to with the Hana (a 12" mix of Grace Jones' Slave to the Rhythm), which as everyone knows who's heard it, is a superb recording of some pretty cool music.

I think everyone who was there would agree that the improvement was far from subtle.....! And now with a properly set-up cartridge fitted, the Techy went onto produce some superb sounds, and I have to say was one of the best modded Techies I've heard, most likely due to having a quality off-board PSU fitted (one of Nick's designs), an upgraded bearing, I think from Vantage Audio, and a quality tonearm which suited a low-compliance cartridge, such as the Denon.

I also think that some were surprised at how detailed the sound was, given that it was simply a 'lowly' bog-standard DL-103 with a spherical tip... The sound that the cartridge (and partnering T/T) produced was full of vim and vigour, with a nicely muscular bass, communicative 'valve-like' midrange, and above all, FUN FACTOR, which for me the 103 majors at, especially when playing a 12" single of Yello's 'The Race'. That sounded simply sublime, motoring along with an infectious intensity, and had everyone boogying away on their seats! :eyebrows:

I was also impressed by Macca's Akais, as indeed I've always been with them at his place, so was glad that he got the opportunity to show others what they are capable of. Only the room layout (and the fact that they weren't on stands to compliment that) worked against them, but that aside still showed off their true 'studio monitor' qualities, allowing listeners an addictive 'hear through' quality with all recordings, which simply doesn't happen, in my experience, with 'normal' speakers, as well as proving that their use of multiple arrays of drive units certainly didn't hold back their performance - quite the opposite in fact. The designers at Akai clearly new what they were doing here.

I also very much enjoyed Rich B's lightly-tweaked Techy, fitted with an impressive Audio Technica arm, which was originally designed for broadcasting purposes. This is a superbly engineered tonearm, designed to extract maximum performance from partnering cartridges, and was no doubt significantly responsible for why the Denon DL-110 cartridge fitted sounded so good! Coupled with a modified Croft preamp and a little T-amp performing power amp duties, through Rich's Rega floorstanders, the music played boogied like as bastard, and had an infectious rhythmic drive, which (almost) made you want to get up and dance... Thankfully, most of us managed to restrain ourselves! :uhho:

With rock music, the system locked onto bass guitar, in particular, with considerable aplomb, producing a sound that made you want to 'jam with the band', and was simply a riot considering the modest cost with which this system had been assembled. Yes, it wasn't 'perfect' in a hi-fi sense (nothing ever is), buy boy was it FUN to listen to and made you forget all about the hi-fi and just revel in the music, which is a trait I have to say is present in all of the system's I've heard Rich put together. He clearly has a good pair of ears, understands the concept of SPPV, and knows exactly what he wants from a hi-fi system. Well done, mate!

Last but not least, was Alan's superb Revox reel-to-reel player, which for me again was a major highlight...

Alan had serviced and applied some significant component upgrades to the unit, and you could certainly hear the results! Playing an excellent assortment of classic rock music, all of which was superbly recorded, it once again demonstrated that analogue music replay doesn't get any better than tape done at its best, and here I thought that as good as Nick's modded Technics T/T was, the Revox showed it a clean pair of heels, producing a sound that was hugely dynamic, powerful, detailed in the extreme, weighty and authoritative, and above all, just shockingly lifelike!

Well done, Alan, the work you've put in there has clearly paid off... Stunning!

All in all, this was arguably the best NEBO yet. The diverse collection of superb equipment and the knowledge and passion amongst its owners for getting the most out of it seems to increase with every event, so long may that continue. Thanks again to all who made it happen. Here's to the next one! :yesbruv:

Thanks for those kind comments Marco. I thought the system rocked pretty well on the day. As a dangerous amateur/rookie at best compared to some of the technical expertise there it's always nice when my most haphazard efforts give others some enjoyment too.

Nice to meet with you again and sorry we hardly got a chance to chat with everything going on before you had to hit the road again. R

Nick's superb 300b amplifier also made these speakers really sing IMO with his own Techy 1210 turntable, particularly with Marcos very nicely set up denon 103, some wonderful Vinyl played here an absolute treat.

Glad you enjoyed it, Alan. I think it proves that even the bog-standard DL-103 can sound great (and not lacking in detail or openness) when suitably fettled and partnered - it's just a pity that Jez (a big 103 critic) couldn't make it, so I could've demonstrated that point! ;)

I agree that Nick's modded Techy sounded superb, and no doubt would've done even more so, had we been able to fit the Hana cartridge properly, as even though it was far from being optimised, I could hear that it potentially had much to offer. Also, let's not forget the part his superb phono stage played in proceedings. It just got on with the job in hand, without fuss, which in my experience is the sign of a quality piece of kit.

Just one other thing I should mention briefly... It was rather hilarious to note, despite all his empty promises and bluster, the non-appearance of a certain hot-air merchant (amp designer) from Epping! I'm informed that a pathetic excuse was made for his absence: he had a cold, which of course was all very convenient!!! :D

Of course we all know the truth was that he never had any intention of coming in the first place, and wanted to try and scupper the event, or more likely simply express severe frustration at being prevented from doing what he wanted [ah diddums]. He needs to learn that he can't always get his own way, and certainly no-one desired his presence at NEBO, which given his sociopathic, abusive and antagonistic behaviour, for completely unjustified reasons, towards many of those who'd have been there, was entirely understandable.

It's just a pity he didn't come, as had he turned up, the owner of the hotel would've asked him to leave (as she'd been informed that an unwanted visitor may turn up), and if he'd refused to leave, then the police would've been called, and the old tit would've been escorted by them from the premises. Now *that* would've been hilarious and definitely worth photographing!! :eyebrows: :eyebrows:

Anyway, only a true idiot would travel nearly 500 miles return to somewhere where he wasn't wanted, and potentially risk being subjected to dogs abuse (or worse), so of course we know the real reason for his no-show. Now this needs saying once and for all, so pay attention, sweetheart, because I know you'll be reading:

Because of your lunatic behaviour towards everyone you've fallen out with [it's always someone else's fault, not yours], you've succeeded to permanently alienate yourself from other hi-fi enthusiasts, so outside of your small band of arse-lickers, NO-ONE wants to know you. You've made your bed now, so lie in it. *That* is the REALITY. Therefore in future, embrace it and accept it.

In any case (as Steve mentioned on Saturday), it's likely that attendance at future NEBO events will be via invitation only, so you won't be given an opportunity to gatecrash. Just stay at home instead and water your house plants, like a good old geriatric!

Over and out.

Marco.

No problem, Rich. Your efforts deserve to be recognised, as for me, every system you've put together at NEBO (even last year when your speakers hated the room) has never failed to convey the musical message and be fun to listen to, so "dangerous amateur" or not, you clearly have good ears... ;)

Yup, shame we never got the chance to chat more and share a few beers (maybe next time if I stay over), as I had a long drive back to Wrexham, via Stoke. In total, I covered 420 miles that day!

:yesbruv:

Marco.

What follows is from me alone with no string pulling anywhere - I want to make that clearly understood.

Sorry Marco, is the above content really your call to make, as I didn't think you were an organiser of this event, merely a participant-enthusiast like everyone else? I however, was invited by the organisers and genuine apologies for not being able to attend, as it really is too far for me and family commitments rule my life now, all things Hifi related coming well down the list sadly. it looks as though a great time was had by all, so well done and more of them.

Firstly, the chap concerned above has a form of lung cancer - not a lie as I've seen the drugs and op-scars as proof - and what to us would be a straightforward chest infection is something to be seriously taken serious note of and I was asked not to visit with stock recently because of it - my car's failing water pump didn't help either, so it was to our mutual advantage. He no longer resides in Epping, which is a pain for me as I have to travel a lot further with stock every month but needs must here as I really enjoy making it... To live under something of a death-sentence isn't a nice experience I'm sure, with the knowledge always there that a relapse is possible at short notice. I can't speak for anything else, except to repeat that when I was being taken apart on here some years ago, I looked deep into what I was posting to find out WHY the pee was being taken, acknowledged there was some truth in the pee taking and altered my posts accordingly. the pee taking promptly stopped and opened the way for the freelance work I do. Just a thought chaps...

Anyway, all the best to Rich and Steve and hope they continue with enjoyable events like these :)

Hi Dave,

Sorry Marco, is the above content really your call to make, as I didn't think you were an organiser of this event, merely a participant-enthusiast like everyone else?

What content are you referring to? If you're talking about making NEBO invite only, that was entirely Steve (Floyd)'s idea, as the organiser. The matter was brought up by him on Saturday at NEBO, so I'm only reiterating what he said.

If you're referring to the fact that the man in question's presence wasn't wanted by anyone there, or at any future NEBO events, then given the strength of feeling I know from others on the matter (those who regularly attend NEBO), I think that I can safely point that out, as it unquestionably represents the feelings of the majority.

The fact is, the man in question knew he wasn't welcome, but being the belligerent pain in the arse that he is, decided to kid on he was going, simply to try and stir it! "I WILL BE THERE"... Haha, what a joke!

Yes, originally when Steve advertised NEBO on said person's forum, ALL were welcome, but as often happens in life, circumstances change, and due to how he was treated by said person on said forum (Steve can explain in more detail, if he so wishes), he decided that he wouldn't want to share said person's company at NEBO, so made it known to him via email that he wasn't welcome (both parties involved had a lengthy discussion about the matter), which said person rudely wouldn't accept, simply because he thinks that he's entitled to do what he wants.

At that point, he should've respected Steve's wishes and left it there, not continued to moan and threaten to sue folk on his forum like some rejected idiot. Steve has since deleted his log-in details for said forum, so couldn't edit the original advert to state that said person wasn't welcome, hence why the ad has remained as it was originally written.

I however, was invited by the organisers and genuine apologies for not being able to attend, as it really is too far for me and family commitments rule my life now, all things Hifi related coming well down the list sadly. it looks as though a great time was had by all, so well done and more of them.

No problem - totally understand. If your circumstances change, it would be nice to meet you at such an event in future :)

Yes, I'm aware of his condition and hope that he's managing to cope as best as possible. I'm also fully aware of what cancer does, as my mother died from a form of it recently.

Living under something of death sentence certainly isn't a nice experience, but most people handle it in a rather more dignified and less confrontational manner than him, and manage to conduct themselves with a modicum of decorum. If he's that bad, which I don't doubt, then he shouldn't be contemplating driving 500 miles anywhere, least of all to somewhere where he wasn't welcome. It's as simple as that.

Well, Dave, if you wish to be controlled like that by others, then good luck to you. I certainly wouldn't entertain it, although that doesn't mean I don't have faults, as indeed everyone does, or am beyond criticism, but I would certainly pay no attention whatsoever to what some idiots think, whom I have zero respect for, and so their 'opinions' mean less than nothing to me.

It would be different if the criticism was coming from a friend, someone with my best interests at heart and whose opinions I respected - *then* I would take on board what they said and perhaps act on it. Also, what said person has written on his forum about others and I on AoS has gone WAY, WAY BEYOND "pee taking". It's outright harassment, and almost certainly actionable. The man has a mania about me!

In any case, what right does anyone have to judge what is deemed as 'acceptable' or otherwise, in terms of what one writes on forums? You are who you are, and should be accepted as such, and thus allowed to express your opinions on that basis (as long as no rules are being broken or you're not being abusive), no matter what others think!

The fact is, no stranger has any right to force you to change!! :nono: I'm not going to alter my posts here because some idiots of no consequence, who mean less than nothing to me, don't like them (or me) - fuck that. They can simply dry their eyes and get over it. I'm not out to be their friend or win a popularity contest!

I mean just who do these folk think they are? Are they somehow perfect? Should we return the "pee taking" in their direction, to the same extent that they dish it out to others? I can assure you that many of them would thoroughly deserve the pish ripped right out of them, in the cruelest way imaginable, and are utterly deluded if they think that their own forum posts are beyond ridicule! ;)

But no, unlike them, we resist that temptation, as we've got far better things to do with our time, so we largely just ignore them, and quietly treat them with the contempt that they deserve.

Anyway, I suggest that we leave it there, as I certainly don't want the good vibe of the NEBO thread polluted with this type of stuff. I had a point to make, and duly did so, you chose to respond, I've now replied and that's that. So let's move on

If you've got anything further to say about theis matter, please do so via PM.

Marco.

Fair enough, but of course we all knew there was never any chance it would come to that, as he's simply a hot-air merchant trying to stir it. Since RD didn't go, it's all speculation, and not particularly interesting speculation at that. I thought there was a ban on discussing him, anyway?

Marco
25-05-2016, 18:29
Yes, and as I've told you before, the ban remains in place from me 99% of the time, but if I chose occasionally to make comment, because I think it's warranted (given the level of unprovoked daily abuse I put up with from him on his 'forum', the vast majority of which is ignored in compliance with the ban), then I reserve the right to do so. Therefore, please embrace that fact and don't bring the matter up again.

Now, have you anything constructive to offer to the discussion? If not, and you find the current subject matter uninteresting, then I suggest you concentrate your efforts elsewhere.

I was going to comment on this but instead I'll just make a noise like air escaping from a fast puncture and leave it at that. ;)

My show report:

Liked Steve's (SPS) system, very listenable. Rich B also played a blinder with his TT/Croft/T-amp/Rega speakers - don't know what you've done to that SL1200 but it sounded excellent. And the T-amp actually impressed, which is a first for me.

I was less convinced by the 300B/Edingdale II pairing than most, it seems, I guess this is where you get into personal preference but it didn't seem to be able to go loud enough cleanly enough for me.

The pairing of the Akai speakers with Gordon's re-built Dynaco 75 seemed to work reasonably well, given it was just a lash up. Comments ranged from 'it sounds very 'Seventies' to 'Bloody lovely' so I suppose it was ultimately a mixed bag. Fun to do, though.

Thanks to Steve for once again organising a great day. Just like a big party, really, in which some semi-serious (and occasionally some serious) listening breaks out. Look forward to the next one. :)

Ha!

Well, so far, that's what my ears and experience tell me. For me, Alan's Revox was a class above any other source component demonstrated - and by a notable margin, followed by Nick's Techy (once the DL-103 had been fitted), followed by Rich's Techy, simply because it's had less money spent on it, but for sheer SPPV and fun factor, it was the star of the day! :)

I agree about the Eddingdales. I've heard them sound great in the past, mainly in home listening environments, which I guess is no surprise, but at NEBO they didn't really do it for me. However, I suspect that this was partly because they were being compared directly in the 'serious room' with Steve's DIY OBs, which (quite understandably) were in a different league, and a hard act to follow.

Out of interest, how would you say Nick's modded Techy, with the DL-103 fitted, compares with mine, and the sound you heard from it at NEBO 5? The spec is broadly similar, although my T/T has an upgraded platter.

Marco.

I only had a quick listen to Nick's deck and that was before the cartridge set up got sorted and then there was some problem with the amplification and I didn't get a listen to it after that. So can't speculate on that one, really.

Gazjam
27-05-2016, 09:04
The Eddingdales could have sounded better on the day, I agree Martin.

I mentioned to Colin that they sounded a bit shut in and muddled in the mids compared to mine at home, and that in my system my set took a long time to open up fully, still changing even after months of daily use.
I think the ones at Nebo were pretty much fresh out the packet and didn't have a lot of time on them to be fair.

The run in set of the originals at Nebo 6 sounded to me more open and musically expressive than the mark 2's.
Back in the day when I got my own set home they did sound good, but a million miles away from how they sound now.
The speakers still need some time on them, bring 'em back next year Colin! :)

Saying all that, the highlight of the day for a lot of folk was Alans R2R, and that session was played through the Eddingdales!

Steves OB's WERE a hard act to follow, thought they sounded great with Nick's 300B integrated.

No worries. Shame, as you missed one of the best sounds of the day, especially when a 12" single of Yello's 'The Race' was played. For me, well-produced 12" singles on vinyl, reproduced on a quality T/T, are the nearest thing you'll get, dynamically, to quality recordings on R2R.

Gary, good point about the Eddies :)

Yes, no doubt about that. I very nearly bought them.

I thought Steve's speakers sounded best with his amps, not that it was bad sound with the 300B in place, but it wasn't as 'seamless'. Splitting hairs, I know.

I did love the RTR, they are the coolest piece if hi-fi kit it is possible to own, just think some people kid themselves on a bit about how good they are from a technical point of view. I'm clearly not enough of a romantic about these things ;)

Yes, but what are we doing: playing 'Top Trumps' or listening to music? ;)

So who gives a fuck about technicalities when the music sounds so good! As we all know, numbers aren't the be all and end all. The acid test for any piece of kit, in situations like NEBO, is how much it was talked positively about by those who heard it - and in that respect just read the feedback here that Alan's received.

Technically still better than vinyl though!

I have made live recordings in which the feed from the desk was split to both a 2496 digital recorder and a reel to reel at 15ips The digital recording sounded great... until one heard how much better still the r2r sounded! "Space", "depth", more natural "organic texture" (pseuds corner beckons.... or 6 moons!) were the areas where the r2r just trounced the digital. Now the r2r would have been something like £10k in today's money whereas the digital gear was modern home studio gear at £200 or so.... Would much better ADC/DAC chips, power supplies and op amps etc in a pro unit at several £k have made all the difference? overtaken the r2r?

Also bear in mind they were being driven by a low power 300b amp, being played much louder than it would be in a domestic situation..

Yes as I said that system just couldn't do the level of clean slam and wallop that I like but which may be a total irrelevance for others.

300B single endeds sound gorgeous no dispute but the lack of power is a sacrifice I can't make personally.

Marco
27-05-2016, 17:42
It's all a question of context.

That's why you need super-efficient speakers. I think Steve's OBs are something like 105db (someone can correct me here if necessary), and there was no lack of "clean slam" when those were used with Nick's 300B. It was that combination I enjoyed the Yello track with so much. I could easily live with that system [fronted by Nick's Techy].

With the Eddies, it was a different matter, but then I'm sure that Gaz encounters no such problems in his gaff, nor indeed have I heard them struggle in that way in other domestic situations I've heard them in. However, in general I'm with you when it comes to preferring a good few watts up my speakers, which is why I've gone the P/P, not SET route, with my valve amps :)

In a domestic situation 300Bs are a different proposition altogether.
With Nick's amps anyways...only heard one other in my system and it was the wishy washy bass and rolled off treble you read about.
Mids were pretty great though.

With my (active) Pre and my Nick 300B I cant get the volume past 8 o'clock without my acoustic guitar vibrating on the wall behind me.
Any further twists on the volume knob and picture frames in the room start to rattle!
Very close to "brown note" bass and slam too.

Your never gonna hear yout kit at its best at these kind of soiree's and some kit will always be better suited to the room being used.
You remember the 752 Freedoms from last Nebo...jeez, they were belting out ZZ Top like nothing else.

S'all good.

Yes, as Nick has commented, those of us who are long term Owston attendees know that all this stuff has been gone through before, what is being learned at NEBO we have already been through at Owston as far as how different kit sounds. OB's always do well at these things, in this case as Marco says, Steve's are highly sensitive so sounded great with the 300b, with no lack of dynamics.

I've little doubt the new Edingdales would sound lovely in a domestic setting with that amp.

We should start moving closer to the speakers and turning them down a bit...

remember that the Edingdales at this Nebo have a completely new set of drivers so they are not the same speaker as the previouse models sold.
I do agree that systems sound different in different rooms but I know my own amps and R2R and they sound good with my 3 different sets of speakers at home. The voyager mono block amps have an output of 100W (min) per Channel into 8 ohms and good current delivery to the output stage.
I heard the same muddle in the mid / bass and it could be just a new set of tight drivers or that the Xover needs more work and I am sure Colin will get them singing for the next Nebo.
I agree with Jez though that R2R can be more accurate than Vinyl, I can get the Tascam BR20 to reprpoduce a set of recorded test tones from 30htz to 22KHz @ 15" / sec within + - 0.5DB on a decent machine + - 2DB on all R2R so they do have a very accurate frequency responce with decent tape.
BTW I also record a subliminal message into each tape to brain wash all of you into thinking the R2R was the Dogs Bo**ocks, you only have to watch 2 revolutions of those 10.5" tapes to become completely hoked, so you realy dont stand a chance LOL :D:D, martin must have had his BAT protection shield switched on:rolleyes::doh:

My Techie is going to get a cosmetic makeover over the next few weeks. I was talking to a pal yesterday who is making custom veneers for bespoke guitar pickups and scratcplates. We've talked about finishing the rather tatty top plate bit in some rather exotic veneers, similar to what Qwin did a while ago with that deck he modified for his lady friend.

So next time you see it should be a treat for the eyes as well as ears. I might also source a new platter to replace the old DJ worn one on currently.

For anyone interested I'll list the current mods here again.

AT1005mk2 tonearm bought from this forum in a Speedy Steve birch ply armboard. Steve also made an arm rest for this and fitted it to the collar.

Londog Audio Step 2 linear PSU. This is the one with the second regulator stage which I have installed into the deck where the old transformer used to sit.

A Vantage Audio bearing, bought lightly used from here. Didn't want to spend a whole lot of money on this so this was a cost effective upgrade and is suitably slippy. Just going back over this thread here.
http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?10468-Vantage-Audio-upgraded-technics-bearing

To the arm was fitted a Denon DL-110 in a Sumiko headshell. This was a trade with Struth for some other kit so thanks to him for that.

Pair of Techniboots on the stock feet, also bought used from Cagey on here. The deck sits on a very stable shelf so no additional isolation is necessary I feel.

So basically it's a budget AoS deck, all of the bits and knowledge sourced from here in one way or another. If Marco's is the Waitrose deck, mine is its Lidl brother

Just at this point i would like to thank you for the kind coments about my system, marco has a good point about my system being an unfair comparison to any more ordinary speakers, open baffles have an inherent advantages and disadvantages, which i have worked to overcome, the main advantages are that with the right drivers they can be more dynamic than most speakers as the drivers are not constrained by any form of cabinet.
I would like to add that if the drivers in my baffles where installed in any comercial speaker the cost of those speakers would likely be in five figures.

I thought Steve's speakers sounded best with his amps, not that it was bad sound with the 300B in place, but it wasn't as 'seamless'. Splitting hairs, I know.
)

Thanks for coments, nicks amps are always top class, my view is new production 300b's loose out to the old valves, new production tends to thicken the sound up, loosing the detail to a degree... depending on the valve, they also seems to add to the bass weight at the expense of texture, that was clear to me on the day
Im am lucky enough to own a pair of vintage STC 300a valves they have quite a sound compared to any new production 300b, unfortunately they are rare valves. For me, and as px25's are very close sounding, and i also have a few spares i make do with the px's on day to day basis.
Cheers

Hi Steve,

First of all, nice meeting you again and having a chat. I agree it's all about learning, and you're certainly someone I can learn from (along with Nick) :)

marco has a good point about my system being an unfair comparison to any more ordinary speakers, open baffles have an inherent advantages and disadvantages, which i have worked to overcome, the main advantages are that with the right drivers they can be more dynamic than most speakers as the drivers are not constrained by any form of cabinet.

Indeed, and that's the whole point and why it was an unfair comparison with the Eddies, or indeed any other speakers that were there. That, and the fact that what we were listening to with your OBs was the culmination of many years of work, tuning, upgrading and voicing by someone who fundamentally knows, from experience, what a good sound is and how recorded music should be reproduced, by marrying the best of old and new technology.

I've done that to an extent myself with the Tannoys, so I know what rewards that the latter can bring. For me, it's definitely the way to go to achieve genuine high-end sound at distinctly non-high end prices, although the drivers used on your OBs aren't cheap. At the end of the day, however, it's all about achieving maximum SPPV, which is the mantra we'll always continue to preach on AoS - and both your system and Rich's (at opposite ends of the scale) epitomise that approach.

Thanks for coments, nicks amps are always top class, my view is new production 300b's loose out to the old valves, new production tends to thicken the sound up, loosing the detail to a degree... depending on the valve, they also seems to add to the bass weight at the expense of texture, that was clear to me on the day

Yup, I know where you're coming from. I thought that I marginally preferred Nick's 300B amp to yours, but it could've largely been music dependent, and to be honest I didn't really get the chance to compare them properly. However, with your speakers in situ, I could certainly live with both amps.

I do agree about the sound of new production valves versus the best NOS varieties. Like for like, there really is no comparison. The biggest differences for me is always in the midrange, where NOS varieties always have a 'magical' quality (openness and texture) that their modern counterparts simply don't get near.

One time, however, I would like to hear your system fronted by your TD-124, instead of your usual digital kit, as for me, your speakers really came alive when fronted by Nick's Technics, which for me showed your digital kit (as good as it was) a clean pair of heels, and I'm sure that would also have been the case with your superb Thorens. You know I've been on at you about this for ages! ;)

Anyway, Steve, I'm giving you this feedback because I think what you're doing, by building your own kit to such a high standard, should be encouraged, and with the accent on maximum SPPV, through judicious component selection. Therefore, please continue to grace future NEBO events with your excellent kit - and I'm sure that I speak for everyone else here when I say that

Rich, I think your deck sounded excellent and your system very musical
TBH I have yet to hear a bad Techy, my eldest son has a pair of 1210s and a pioneer mixer rotel power amp and a pair of Cambridge speakers and it sounds excellent, my 1200 in stock form just sounded so right to me with a DL110 cart.
I did also like the sound of the Denon 103 cart though and I was listening to one at Steves place in his blinding good system the other day so I have just ordered a 103R from HIFIX

Hi Alan,

I'd try it on both headshells and see what works best (with the Mpingo), as you never know with these things, and can just luck out on a magic combo. However, as you say, you may need a little more mass than either of your headshells provide as standard. Use the heaviest mounting hardware you've got to bump up the mass. Stainless steel Allen bolts are best.

See how it goes, but if you'd like to try what you heard with mine at NEBO, then aside from the Mpingo spacer, you need an Audio Technica MG-10 headshell. These are made from solid magnesium, and I find that its damping qualities are excellent and really bring the best out of the 103.

The other item I used was an Isokinetik Graphite Stabiliser (in conjunction with the Mpingo spacer), see here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ISOKINETIK-GRAPHITE-CARTRIDGE-STABILISER-FOR-ALL-TONEARMS-A-MUST-HAVE-UPGRADE-/171336377021

Not cheap, but it really does the business and adds just a bit more mass, to really dampen the resonant tendencies of the plastic shell used on the standard 103 and 103R, allowing music to be reproduced without any edginess or grain, as can sometimes be the case with these cartridges, as well as opening the sound up quite dramatically. The key, however, with the DL-103 is getting the headhshell mass absolutely right :)

Hi Alan,

It's pretty system dependent, but you should hit the sweet spot somewhere between 100-200 Ohms. Some try it a bit higher, but for me the sound hardens up too much and bass loses definition. I'd start at 100 Ohms and work upwards from there.

Let us know how you get on :)
